Brexit

Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

Cheese can be frozen for about 6 months I believe. I have some in my freezer, grated cheddar, but I believe one can freeze blocks, although ideally divided into portions.

Rhubarb - sorry, no idea!

NoWordForFluffy · 29/07/2019 07:49

Farmfoods had butter for £1 the other week. None in stock though!

Socksontheradiator · 29/07/2019 08:06

With cheddar cheese, it freezes best if you grate it first, I have found.

AnnaMariaDreams · 29/07/2019 09:03

Most of my stash is untouched but need to check through it all, make a list and do some stock rotation. I think it’s serious this time so would like to double my tinned stash, especially fruit.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/07/2019 09:15

I've just put two packs of butter in the freezer and ordered some seeds for overwintering veg. I missed the boat on planting christmas veg :(

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/07/2019 11:24

@Rachelover40 come back and read and start filling another cupboard....

Has having a full cupboard been useful?

Is there anything you use now that you would miss if it was delayed to the supermarket?

Could you still afford your favourite coffee say if it went up by 10%?

we will draw you in lots of us started with a full cupboard and a few extra tins

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/07/2019 11:26

I seem to be coming out of a week of hypermobile end of term induced fatigue. And need to clean.

broken1982 · 29/07/2019 11:51

People are really doing this? Seriously. Am I going to starve because I don't have a stockpile HmmConfused

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/07/2019 12:05

Nah, we just talk about it to wind people up.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/07/2019 12:07

Read the news and make your own mind up. It is up to you what you want to do.

Socksontheradiator · 29/07/2019 12:19

@broken1982, there is a lot of uncertainty around what no deal will look like. Wouldn't it be best to make sure you have a few extra bits on in case the supply chain is disrupted?
Look into the 'just in time' arrangement for supplies to get to supermarkets and you'll see how easily the shops could be emptied if (likely when) there are hold ups at the ports.
Just worth being able to avoid the shops around that time, for your own convenience and to avoid adding to any panic buying pandemonium, by being ahead of the game Smile

broken1982 · 29/07/2019 12:22

And winding me up you are! What utter nonsense. Do you lot have nothing better to do

SistemaAddict · 29/07/2019 12:24

Well you have a choice not to open or read the thread Hmm

Socksontheradiator · 29/07/2019 12:32

Plenty to do thanks. I think I have you a perfectly well reasoned account of why I think it's a a sensible thing to do, but the choice is yours. No need to get worked up, just find a thread that resonates with your beliefs Smile

bellinisurge · 29/07/2019 13:01

@broken1982 , some people shave or wax their privates which I think is ridiculous . So I don't bother joining in a conversation about it.
Some people hate dogs and don't bother with The Doghouse. Etc etc.
You too have the same choices. Obviously you are welcome to keep posting here but be aware that some people think differently to you on this subject.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2019 13:05

I suspect that once Johnson says it's your patriotic duty to get a buffer of food in, posters like @broken1982 will be all over theses threads like a rash😂😂😂😂

Yes. HTH.

Bellasblankexpression · 29/07/2019 13:48

It’s not even wholly about Brexit for me broken but since having our water supply unexpectedly cut off, and the whole family coming down with flu, and having issues with snow, it’s been really useful not to have to go out for food and supplies during these times.
Brexit is just another thing to prepare for IMO but if you’re not interested don’t read about it!

Bluebell9 · 29/07/2019 14:34

I've been a lurker on these threads for a while and have just started to re-stock my supplies after running them down over the last few months.

I'm pregnant with my first and my due date is 27th October.
I was planning on prepping a weeks worth of food and freezing it for when the baby arrives anyway, as well as supplies of food to last a month or so for any brexit delays.

I'm also prepping Christmas as I have DSC so I was planning to have a lot of the present shopping done by the end of October.

I'm planning to stock up on nappies but does anyone have any ideas on how many I'll need/sizes? Or any other baby related items I should be stocking up on?

Thanks

bellinisurge · 29/07/2019 14:44

@Bluebell9 it's easy for me to say it because my dd is now 12 but I would consider supplementing any disposables you buy with reusables as well. Do a bit of research about what's available and feasible for you. Even consider making your own or getting a friend/relative who's handy with a needle to do it for you.
I've seen reusables sold in Aldi and Sainsbury's. Not saying Thou Shalt Only Use Reusables because it is a personal choice and not suitable for everyone. However, it gives you the option of mixing it up a bit rather than only relying on disposables.

AutumnCrow · 29/07/2019 14:48

I've been waiting my whole life for something to get really hysterical about with gay abandon, @broken1982 so hey don't steal my sunshine 🌞

I've just bought another two multi-packs of tuna. I feel soothed yet unhinged at the same time. Much much cheaper than therapy, @broken.

Bluebell9 · 29/07/2019 15:01

@bellinisurge my brother has a load of newborn reuseables which he has offered me. Ideally I'd love to only use reuseable ones but I think that'll depend how much sleep I'm getting with all the extra work that is needed for them! I'll have a look at getting reuseables in larger sizes too.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2019 15:12

Exactly @Bluebell9 - there's enough pressure with a newborn. If you can include reusables in your nappy plans but only if you can.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/07/2019 17:25

Baby supplies:
Cotton wool
Top and tail bowls
Wet wipes, lots of packs
Bibs for weaning
Clothes in larger sizes. 6 months is very messy with weaning.
Baby shampoo,
Baby meds such as Calpol.
Milton/ sterilisers
Bottles
Follow on milk.
Tin of ordinary formula. Can be used for mixing with baby rice when weaning.

Always good to have a backup plan. I planned to end but was advised to supplement with formula for my health.

SistemaAddict · 29/07/2019 17:44

Muslin cloths. You can never face too many of those. My 3 still sleep with theirs as comforters.

I'm going to get some bamboo cotton wool pads that are washable and wash cloths too. We use too many wipes but they are so handy.
