Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

I'm off to our local Asda to see what I can pick up today. I wonder where school tights are made...?

@GoneWishing, good luck with your MRI results. Flowers

Our blackberries in the NW are mostly not ready yet. There's a few, but it'll be another couple of weeks yet.

I've just bought a few treat bits for Christmas to go under the bed with the rest of our stock.

Hoooo · 14/08/2019 14:13

Anyone use "who gives a crap"?

Bamboo loo roll?

AutumnCrow · 14/08/2019 15:08

I was promised HRT when I agreed to have my ovaries removed as part of a total hysterectomy. Never, ever did I foresee it not being available in the UK, or I would have kept my ovaries.

It's just the start, isn't it, of a widespread, long-lasting medicines crisis? God help us all.

GoneWishing · 14/08/2019 15:19

Thanks @NoWordForFluffy - I assume it's a good sign that no one's been in a hurry to call me back to the hospital or anything else hasty!

The meds are my biggest worry, but there's not much I can do about it. I have a decent amount of one of my medications, as it's PRN and I don't need it as much as I'm prescribed (I haven't gone mad stockpiling or anything). A tiny excess (something in between a few days or a week or two) of most of the others. But the most important ones I haven't been able to take less of to build up, and one of them got changed recently, so wouldn't have had a chance anyway. I probably won't drop dead if I have to go without for a little bit, but I'd prefer not to try.

Just waiting for a price for private coil insertion autumn

I started peri menopause at 40 and need the oestrogen til at least 52 for my heart and bones (especially as I have cardiac issues due to peri and my mum has menopause induced osteoporosis...)

I'm also progesterone intolerant.

Good times.

SistemaAddict · 14/08/2019 15:34

Meds are a main worry for many. There's only so much that's stashable. I picked up some antihistamines today for DDs for next summer. I'll stick them in with the first aid kit. I got myself a nose spray too.
I've also picked up extra shampoo and conditioner whilst Elvive is half price in Boots. They were out of men's razor blades completely but ok for disposables so I took advantage of the offer on them of 16 for £6. Aveeno hand cream was reduced to £3 75 in Asda. I get dreadfully dry and chapped hands in winter as I'm out in all weathers on the school hike 😩

meds are a concern for me too. I have just tried to order my repeat prescription and been refused because I have 5 tablets left on this one. They're clearly getting very strict.

I have a question for those more knowledgable than myself...

I am a secret low level prepper - for bad weather/snow/zombies etc. I always have to hand a gas stove, lantern, candles, water and at least a few weeks

I am starting to build a better Brexit cupboard so that we can ride out the storm and have lurked here for ages and learning lots from you wise-ones.

My question is on milk! Currently we have our milk delivered, 3 times a week, directly from a local farm that's walking distance away. I keep wanting to add UHT to my stash but don't think we'll need it. Obviously I know their cows will still need milking post-Brexit but I'm wondering how it will affect them??

Will their supplies of animal feed be affected? It's autumn so the cows won't be relying on grass so much. Am I naive to think I can rely on their deliveries of milk (or go and get it myself) or will they struggle to keep their herds going with less support from the EU and deliveries of feed? Would I be wise to stock like some milk as well - especially considering I love a cuppa!!

SistemaAddict · 14/08/2019 16:15

New thread for brexit deals, I mean bargains! Grin

Brexit Preppers -Share Your Bargains Here Thread http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eureferendumm2016/3665486-brexit-preppers-share-your-bargains-here-thread

Could you call the dairy and ask them? That's what I'd do just to see if they envisage any difficulties and then I could make alternative plans for UHT.

OP posts:
AutumnCrow · 14/08/2019 16:22

It'll depend on factors like where they get the winter feed from, @AlwaysTimeForWine

Dairy cows need a lot of specialised feed over the autumn/winter to keep up their yields. Otherwise it's lower yields, higher prices, less availability, and more problems in the herd for the vet to look at and bill for.

It's not just a case of chucking them some barley.

AlwaysTimeForWine · 14/08/2019 16:33

Thanks guys. I know it's not just a case of chucking them some Barley!! That's why I asked.
My instinct is that supply/prices would be affected but I wasn't sure if I was just being very paranoid.

I'll go with my instinct to get some UHT in then. I'll definitely miss the gorgeous fresh Guernsey milk though if things go badlySad

AutumnCrow · 14/08/2019 16:37

Sorry @AlwaysTimeForWine Absolutely not having a pop at you - just very fed up of the government and their pet advisors tbh and their supporters who think it'll all be FIIIIINE.

It's good you asked.

AlwaysTimeForWine · 14/08/2019 16:46

I'm starting to get more worried to be honest!

I'm prepping because I don't trust the government to have anything sorted out. I know we're not magically going to fall off a cliff but I don't want to be involved in mass panic buying closer to the Brexit date as everyone else catches up that it's not going to be plain sailing.

My husband thinks I'm a bit mad but when I explained that we'd be helping to take pressure OFF the supply chain by not needing to shop when things go tits up, and that we'd be able to avoid the supermarket chaos, he seemed to understand better.

I have to stop myself from 'doomsday' prepping though Blush I really don't need candles, and water purification tablets, and wind up radios, and fire-lighting kits Grin I just want a 'buffer' of essential food/household supplies (and wine!) to see us through.

NoWordForFluffy · 14/08/2019 17:58

I've just placed an Ocado order of some tinned essentials and eggs, plus treats (generally and Christmas). Delivery 4 Sept.

I need to work out what we eat / need. I think we'll become mostly veggie if necessary as there's no freezer room for much else what with the allotment and garden yields!

lannister · 14/08/2019 19:02

For those stocking up freezers, are you not worried about an unfortunate power cut? I really want to fill the freezer with meat because I can't find tinned alternatives- the kids won't eat any tinned meat/fish except tuna :( any ideas would be gratefully appreciated

NoWordForFluffy · 14/08/2019 19:07

I doubt the power would go off for more than 24 hours at a time and your food should be OK for that long if you keep it shut. Unless you're in NI, when no deal could cause real power issues.

Wolfcub · 14/08/2019 20:23

Agree with Fluffy. Most freezers can cope 12 hours without power unopened and most household insurance covers freezer mishaps so, whilst you’d lose part of your stash, you wouldn’t be the whole way out of pocket

Socksontheradiator · 14/08/2019 20:39

I have filled my freezer, but also have dry/canned goods, a lot of which could be eaten uncooked if necessary. I wouldn't rely on having frozen, but it is the tasty stuff we prefer to eat.
Figure if there was proper zombie apocalypse we'd be grateful for anything.
Very hopeful that the power supply will be OK.
I understand that food supply disruption can also result in petrol supply difficulties. It's not something that I've heard much about, though.
Anyone have any thoughts about that?

mamapants · 14/08/2019 20:44

How long a shelf life does UHT normally have? Was in aldi earlier and was until Nov which is fine if their is a shortage but otherwise was planning on just using it gradually if we ran out. Almond milk was much longer.
Also noticed coconut oil has a really long life and can be used for baking similar to butter so could be useful.

AutumnCrow · 14/08/2019 20:47

I bought some semi-skimmed UHT milk at Lidl yesterday that's BBE February 2020.

Saffrone · 14/08/2019 21:12

Re butter - you can make it into ghee which is shelf stable - needs muslin and quiet so you can hear when the sound changes from rain on a conservatory roof sound to the occasional pop sound! Then strain into sterilised jars. Worth a google as it keeps for years Blush

crankysaurus · 14/08/2019 21:13

I've lurked a bit but I'm going to join your thread, it's got to the point I think BJ might actually ride out the bluff and send us to no-deal.

We've been slowly overlapping DS's prescription meds for about a year so we now have a month spare. DH thought I was being daft when I first suggested that but is glad we did now.

Our cupboards are fairly healthy generally but I'm going to get extra cereal, butter, flour and tomato puree for pizzas (will get extra cheese and salami closer to the time). We'll be able to cobble a few things together and are handy at making bread during any panic buying.

Hadn't thought about fruit but like the idea of freezing blackberries. We have a fair few wild foods books that might get a bit more use. Also have a few solar chargers and gas from camping so should be ok.

Also started brewing our own wine about a year ago so will get some 'emergency' tins of grape juice in case prices shoot up.

Saffrone · 14/08/2019 21:16

Re cheddar: I bought stacks when Ocado had a buy 3 for £3 glitchGrin all of it use by April 15. Still eating it...I don't think you need to freeze it compared to other things.

crankysaurus · 14/08/2019 21:17

I guess I'm not expecting any tricky times to last very long but remember the bread and flour going quickly in the petrol crisis in the early-2000s, and we eat a lot of bready things.
