Ladies & Gents,

This is really old news but I am new to mumsnet & would be interested as to why exactly you voted "leave" rather than "remain". Just your very honest opinion, I am not here to judge, just very intrigued.

OP posts:
Mamamia456 · 05/07/2019 16:37

Glad I made you laugh 😊

Peregrina · 05/07/2019 17:03

Leavers keep coming on these threads - we are not against immigrants, we didn't believe Johnson's lies on the bus.

Then up bobs sonlypuppyfat to come and spoil it for them - too many immigrants, don't speak English, taking all our jobs, but living on benefits and sending the money home, or various permutations of that. The usual Daily Mail/Express cliches.

The sort of person who would probably say "I am not racist but..." or when challenged, the popular option "Oh I don't mean you."

DS's old school sold of a large chunk of playing field for housing. If the Government were to fund education properly this would not have been necessary. Who took the places in the school - I haven't a clue, but many people moving into the area are Londoners priced out of the London market.

Bearbehind · 05/07/2019 17:32

I sicken them off by earning more, travel more and drive cars they dream about.

And rubbing it in their faces no doubt 🤔

Who even says stuff like that?

Bearbehind · 05/07/2019 17:35

There are virtually no Leavers on here or IRL who are pretending this is about anything other than immigration at this stage.

It’s exactly why it’s pointless trying to have sensible discussions about Brexit; you can’t argue with someone who doesn’t think they are being racist but everything they say and do implies otherwise.

Peregrina · 05/07/2019 17:39

So LifeContinues is really a reincarnation of Napoleon?

EngTech · 05/07/2019 17:42

I still reckon when JC gets the keys to No. 10, he will revoke Article 50, sorted 😳

Come the GE, sooner than we expect, people can vote accordingly

In other news, ............................... 😎

Peregrina · 05/07/2019 17:52

I don't think JC would revoke, he's a Lexiter.

Bearbehind · 05/07/2019 17:53

I don’t think JC will ever be PM 😂

bellinisurge · 05/07/2019 18:06

JC is a Lexiteer. And if he is still in his job in the autumn I will be surprised.

Mamamia456 · 05/07/2019 18:11

Of course immigration has played a part in why some people voted for Brexit. Mass immigration had a detrimental effect on the Construction industry. There is another thread on here where this is discussed, unless you had first hand experience of this you will not be able to understand how betrayed and let down British construction workers felt.

Jason118 · 05/07/2019 18:13

Define 'mass immigration '

ContinuityError · 05/07/2019 18:19

I sicken them off by earning more, travel more and drive cars they dream about.

You mean you drive cars that they can’t fit in Grin

Mamamia456 · 05/07/2019 18:28

I am talking about the construction industry, don't know about the effect on other industries where under the EU freedom of movement immigrants came over to work in the Construction industry, bringing down wages. When you have people who are willing to work for less than half of what you're getting, because it's more than what they would get in their own country, you cannot compete with that, and workers thought it was unfair, which it was.

bellinisurge · 05/07/2019 18:31

Ever see "Auf Weidersehen, Pet"? Foreign construction workers taking the jobs of locals . British construction workers in Germany.

Bearbehind · 05/07/2019 18:36

I sicken them off by earning more, travel more and drive cars they dream about.

I keep thinking about this comment - it’s hardly surprising people say there’s a Little Man syndrome is it?

Material possessions don’t trump (better or worse) physical attributes (good or bad)

It says a lot about you that you think they do.

It’s like your whole argument about Brexit - it’s just about winning and being seen to get one over on others.

1tisILeClerc · 05/07/2019 18:37

{I am talking about the construction industry, don't know about the effect on other industries where under the EU freedom of movement immigrants came over to work in the Construction industry, bringing down wages.}

Which is what many UK workers were doing late '70's ? as was made into a TV (comedy) series 'Auweiedersehen pet'.

1tisILeClerc · 05/07/2019 18:38

X post!
The world goes round and round, there is very little that is 'original'.

Mamamia456 · 05/07/2019 19:17

Was there a shortage of workers at the time in Germany, were they undercutting their wages? Were their agencies set up specifically for British workers who had hundreds of Brits working for them for really low wages so that the Germans had difficulty finding employment, because this is what happened to our industry. Unless you have 1st hand experience of this you cannot understand.

pollyoliva · 05/07/2019 19:31

{ I'm upset that all the countryside and school playgrounds have gone!}

And whose real fault is that? Hint, it is not immigration.

Immigration is the cause of playground loss in my town. All the primary schools had to double their intake overnight because of sudden unpredictable immigration from Europe. Where else could they build the extra classrooms needed other than in the playgrounds? Freedom of movement is so random and chaotic that you just can't plan for it. It does seem to have slowed down since the referendum and I think that is a good thing.

bellinisurge · 05/07/2019 19:51

Yep, it's all about immigration. Let's not pretend it's about anything else now.

1tisILeClerc · 05/07/2019 20:00

Mamamia456
If I remember correctly it was a while before the Berlin wall came down and there was a shortage of semi skilled trades in Germany.

pollyoliva
No, you are scapegoating the UK government for not planning and taking stock of immigration. Failure to put a 'brake' on the number of immigrants and plan accordingly is the UK government's job, they failed miserably.
The did not HAVE to use playground areas, a planned approach would have seen other land made available.

Peregrina · 05/07/2019 20:32

But as I have said so many times, blaming the EU has been such a convenient excuse. The one bonus if we leave is that they will only be able to use that excuse for a couple of years.

LifeContinues · 06/07/2019 04:54

.Failure to put a 'brake' on the number of immigrants and plan accordingly is the UK government's job, they failed miserably

See even the regular Pro-Remain poster says that uncontrolled immigration has lead to problems.

lonelyplanetmum · 06/07/2019 05:50

As immigration is being debated ( again) it helps to spend sometime researching facts and figures. The LSE and Oxford Uni Have ferry available research. The findings are always the same and summarised in these charts.

You need to look at the effect of immigration across the country as a whole. Every study shows that even the lower-paid EU workers who were in the U.K. were making a net public contribution. They paid £4.7bn more in taxes p.a. than they took out in public services including schools and hospitals.

So yes successive U.K. governments imposed austerity and failed to distribute enough to state education, but EU migrants contribute far more to schools than native born people.

It may feel different in some areas based on local change and feelings but the facts are that EU. migrants. contributed. more. than U.K. born. Their departure is creating a loss to the exchequer that will result in more austerity.

Upthread someone said since the ref immigration has reduced- this is not true.EU migration has dropped off dramatically but it had been replaced with non EU migration which is good because we need workers but historically non EU contributes less to the exchequer.
