Westministenders: Hustings and Humilation

Round 1 has passed.
Boris is winning. But these are the Tories. Surprises might yet happen.

But the chances are the lying buffon is full speed ahead to be the next PM. As long as he manages to keep his mouth shut.

Unfortunately being Prime Minister involves talking. This might prove to be something that bursts the BorisMania rather rapidly.

A GE is still very much on the cards.

And we might face the Constitutional and undemocratic shutting down of parliament to satisfy the Tory Faithless.

Meanwhile the EU couldn't give less shits. They just think we are wasting the time we were granted in good faith.

31st October beckons with No Deal.

David Davies think his man Raab won it

I could only see this bit on 'threads I'm on' preview.

My brain immediately thought:

.... reminding us what an idiot DD is

(Though 'thick twat' was my actual thought!)

Quintella · 16/06/2019 20:21

Even Raab's mum can't think he won that Grin

It's funny, the journalists don't see a clear winner. Twitter overwhelming says Stewart BUT as I said before there was barely a Leaver watching. Not interested if Johnson isn't on I guess.

Naturally Raab got a poor reception, but he was bland dreadful and looked angry throughout. As well as vastly out of his depth.

Hunt got mixed responses. Some were favourable and said they though he was OK. Some reflected on his insincerity or contrivedness.

Gove. He was slick, spoke to camera and always knew where camera was as he talked to audience. TV viewers hated it. Although what came out of his mouth was all awful, the number of comments about his appearance and being a snake were staggering. I think he did well, but totally did not connect or convey message to audience.

Javid. Didn't connect with studio audience or TV audience. Competent enough answers but it didn't really strike a chord either positively or negatively. Barely a tweet about him. When there was it was to complain about the questions he was getting.

Then Stewart. He talked to the room and the person who was asking a question not camera. He was the only one I noticed taking notes (he looked like he was working whilst Raab and Hunt looked like they had stick up arse). He got laughs and was well received generally. But there were comments about arrogance thrown in too.

I don't this Johnson lost out tonight by not being there. But Gove has a problem and Raab isnt getting votes tomorrow.

Hunt is fine but missing something. Javid still has work to do. He's going to disappear next to Johnson.

Stewart... Well can he get the votes he needs tomorrow? Doesn't matter how well he did in the eyes of remain twitter tonight if he can't. I dunno. Will that debate help him? Well it can't harm him....

Not interested if Farage isn't on, more like.

georgedawes · 16/06/2019 20:30

How many votes do they need to stay in on the next round?

jasjas1973 · 16/06/2019 20:30

How would Farage react to be listened too but not doing what he wants?
Barnier was correct in talking to NF as he is a MEP, he not an MP.

I quite like Rory and have said so much earlier but associating with a man who is basically a fascist/racist is not the way forward...the use of that Nazi poster in order to scare people into voting for Brexit was once again something out of the 1930s.... not Europe's greatest period was it?

derxa · 16/06/2019 20:35

The one who came off worst here was Dominic Raab. He is a very harsh personality but he might appeal to the no dealers in the party.

I like Michael Gove's back story and I have seen him talking to actual farmers. A plus point in my book. He actually believes in Brexit because he led the Leave campaign. He talked in soundbites the whole time

I like Jeremy Hunt. He seems like a decent man.

I like Sajid Javid. He comes from an incredible family.

I like Rory and he was having fun with them all. He was the only one who mentioned Scotland. He knows that a new deal can't be negotiated.

I bloody hate Boris Johnson. A liar and adulterer.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/06/2019 20:38

I wish Boris had been asked about "Fuck business" and this:

Boris Johnson 'ranted f%%% the families during 7/7 bombing victims insult'

He isn't the ambling buffoon most people see
He says "Fuck you" to anyone, however vulnerable, who gets in his way

Astonishing he hasn't been rumbled yet

EXCLUSIVE:
Boris Johnson's alleged outburst came when he was Mayor of London and being briefed about the cost of inquests into the 2005 London terror attacks which killed 52

BigChocFrenzy · 16/06/2019 20:40

Guto Harri, who was Boris' Head of Communications and at the time absolutely devoted to him, said

'They are really for the families (of the victims) benefit.'

To which Boris replied 'Fuck the families, Fuck the families'.

I was having none of this and snapped at him –

'You didn't have to write eight letters of condolence to families of your constituents

or attend the funeral of 31-year-old Lee Baisden (a Fire Authority employee), who had been blown to pieces at Aldgate and comfort his poor widowed mother'.

Katy Balls @katyballs
Rory Stewart currently needs 13 more MPs to back him to get through Tuesday’s ballot. Whether he makes it through or not, Stewart has had lasting effect on contest. Or as one member of government put it: ‘Rory has messed up nearly everyone’s campaign’.

How Rory Stewart derailed his Cabinet colleagues’ campaigns

This is a very good piece.

There is a certain way of running an orthodox leadership campaign which involves advisers and a launch video. By throwing out the rulebook and opting for multiple videos, walks in parks and impromptu rallies, Stewart made some of his rival’s campaigns seem flat and staged by comparison. As ConservativeHome’s Paul Goodman said on Coffee House Shots: ‘What Rory Stewart has done is waged a quite brilliant guerrilla war. He has just used Twitter to disrupt and confound anyone who wasn’t expecting him to be a significant presence’.

I see Stewart has won Tobias Ellwood from Team Hancock. (He falls into the sensible and OK for a Tory camp generally)

{They don’t have one- neither does the man who wasn’t there.}
Reminds me of the rhyme about when I was climbing up the stair I met a man who wasn't there..........

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 16/06/2019 20:45

Not interested if Farage isn't on, more like.

Likely.

jasjas1973 · 16/06/2019 20:45

Even with his Farage comment, imho Stewart is the only person who is actual PM material.

RandomlyChosenName · 16/06/2019 20:45

The trouble with Rory Stewart is that he appeals to those who would never vote for him.

I don’t think Boris Johnson has mass appeal either. He appeals to a few leavers, but not most of them from those I’ve spoken to. A much more moderate leaver would appeal to more of the conservative membership and the wider country in a GE. Not sure who that is out of Gove, Hunt, Raab and Javid.

I’m not sure any of them can deliver the Brexit they want though.

borntobequiet · 16/06/2019 20:45

I tried to watch on C4+1 but had to turn off because of M Gove. Snake. Did catch Javid saying FE a priority - so feel better inclined towards him. Would like to see Johnson/Stewart final.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/06/2019 20:53

Boris won twice in London, hardly a Tory hotbed

Voters find him likeable, because of the amiable upper class buffoon image he projects

  • people who know him, generally despise him !
jasjas1973 · 16/06/2019 20:54

Well considering they've all got these amazing things they want to do, the only question i would like to ask is "What have you all been doing for the last 9 years?"

BigChocFrenzy · 16/06/2019 20:54

I'd like a Gove / Stewart final
I know ! Wink

RedToothBrush · 16/06/2019 20:56

210 Tories have apparently publicly declared who they are backing (but remember it's a secret ballot, so they might do something else and stab the person they say they are backing, in the back)

So far, it looks like only Johnson, Hunt and Gove have the numbers. But Gove is only JUST over the line. Hunt and Johnson look comfortable.

Raab is a few short, but it isn't clear where those votes will come from. He's only got leave support and the majority are declared already. Maybe a few Johnson Brexiteers will lend a hand but tbh it doesn't seem like there is much point.

Javid isn't doing so well. He's still short quite a few votes. And he didn't set the world on fire tonight. Competent enough, but not a lot else. Javid might go tomorrow.

Stewart is the one who is really lagging behind. But I'm not sure his supporters would declare. Indeed we still don't know who a lot of his original 19 were. No idea what will happen tomorrow. It depends on how much people want to rock the boat on the party... Its a test of dissatisfaction amongst Tory MPs over the direction of the last 3 years in some ways. I can't call which way it will go for him. I just don't have a clue.

georgedawes · 16/06/2019 20:56

that was before the ref though BCF. He'd never win a London wide contest now.

RedToothBrush · 16/06/2019 21:00

Is it just me, or can this be taken a different way to the one which was intended?!
