Westministenders: Hustings and Humilation

Round 1 has passed.
Boris is winning. But these are the Tories. Surprises might yet happen.

But the chances are the lying buffon is full speed ahead to be the next PM. As long as he manages to keep his mouth shut.

Unfortunately being Prime Minister involves talking. This might prove to be something that bursts the BorisMania rather rapidly.

A GE is still very much on the cards.

And we might face the Constitutional and undemocratic shutting down of parliament to satisfy the Tory Faithless.

Meanwhile the EU couldn't give less shits. They just think we are wasting the time we were granted in good faith.

31st October beckons with No Deal.

Similarly a lot of the concern about abortion from the right in the US stems from a fear of eugenics.

I can see that and eugenics worries me too. At the turn of the last Century it was often members of the medical profession espousing those views. I think all of us would chose to give birth to a healthy child, which was no doubt where eugenics came from, but the majority of us found the Nazi's taking it to a logical conclusion more than abhorrent.

What I object to with the fanatical religious right is that they also seem to be against contraception and don't seem too concerned about helping women who have conceived an unwanted child. When you see them getting stuck into programmes to help poor women bring up their children without dire poverty so that they are not a burden then I will have a bit more time for them.

howabout · 15/06/2019 13:41

Peregrina I rather share your pessimism on uprating of the state pension at least in the long term, although I would assume there would be a phasing in and grandfathering proposal.

Iambuffy · 15/06/2019 13:44

I agree with BCF
Dire times ahead.
I also agree with woman in that women and children will get the thin end of the wedge.
Twas ever thus.

QueenOfThorns · 15/06/2019 13:49

I think that my expectations are along the lines of yours, BCF. And I dread what that will do to the people who are just scraping by now. As a family, I think we are fortunate and won’t be too badly affected though.

Basil I think my fears come from watching too much TV of the likes of The Handmaid’s Tale and Years and Years. I worry about my DD being trapped in a fascist dictatorship and unable to leave for a better life elsewhere because of a decision that I’ve made. I also worry that she might get ill or be in an accident and be unable to get even basic treatment Sad

Songs, let’s hope it’ll work out OK in the long run Flowers

BigChocFrenzy · 15/06/2019 13:49

howabout For me, the distinction between left and right is economic policy, taxation, public spending, cuts etc

What you think about the better off needing to pay their fair share, instead of further increasing the shocking wealth gap

Anyone who believes in trickledown economics, the rich pissing down on the poor, is of the right

Social liberals can be of the right or left
so a rightwinger like Boris can be very pro-abortion for 'people's girlfriends' Hmm
Ditto guns, gay rights aren't left / right

  • most Tories I know are very socially liberal

e.g. Right / left questions for anyone

If there is a GE soon, would you be supporting Corbyn or Boris (assuming they are both leaders) ?
The other parties are Remain, so it's reasonable you won't vote for them
So far, you persistently defend rightwing Tories or Faragists, but I don't know if that is just tempoary until Brexit

Do you support his tax cuts for the better off, or more investment in public services & reversing UC ?
(or borrow to do both, with a crashing economy)

Do you support the ERG rush for a US FTA that would savage UK farming / agriculture, healthcare,
enable US companies to sue the UK govt for policies that reduce profit, e.g. health advice
restrict deals with countries Trump disapproves of ?

Do you ever condemn Faragists or ERG Tories (& Brexiter donors) like Redwood, JRM
e.g. for moving their money abroad and telling their investors to do so, so they don't suffer like the rest of us

Do you condemn Tory / Leave donors for profiting on betting that the UK will do BADLY

  • hedging on Sterling, UK business share prices - and that foreign competitors will do better ?
Basilpots · 15/06/2019 13:50

Queen. Some of our customers are in the food production industry and I can assure you steps have been taken to mitigate shortages. But we are susceptible to shortages due to supply chain or weather problems remember rice a few years ago? Or potatoes, broccoli and carrots due to weather ?? Even chicken in KFC due to distribution problems ??

It is extremely unlikely we will be faced with empty aisles in supermarkets there may be certain things that may be unavailable for a short period whilst things settle down a bit like threatening of snow seems to send everyone into a frenzy of milk buying or Delia Smith forcing a fresh cranberry shortage. think it will be one one of inconvenience rather than being faced with nothing to eat. We have got so used to having so much choice available pretty much whatever we want when we want. As long as you are flexible there is usually an alternative.

All I have done is ensure I have frozen veg and meat in as an option. No point in me trying to stockpile crisps in this house they just get eaten. By me usually.

Erosion of civil liberties is a tougher one I guess but these things take time and future Governments will be under greater scrutiny than ever hopefully.

Basilpots · 15/06/2019 13:56

Queen too much dystopian tv there !!!

Control the stuff you can and try not to give to much headspace to the stuff you can’t or the stuff that hasn’t happened yet. I do appreciate this is easier said than done.

howabout · 15/06/2019 14:00

BCF if you are at all interested in anything other than persistent personal attacks then MN has an advanced search facility.

Richard Tice is polling twitter for suggestions on where to donate his MEP salary. He can't win because the criticism was that not all MEPs are wealthy enough to make such offers.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/06/2019 14:03

Yep, it is an odd history, peregrina

Abortion, guns - and white phobias about being "replaced" by other races -
are emotive issues that the Republicans deliberately whip up
to panic ordinary (white) people into voting for wealthy interests & big business against their own interests

Before the mid-1960s, the GOP was comparatively liberal on both race and family planning

  • e.g. Margaret Goldwater, the Presidental candidate's wife, advocated for birth control and reproductive rights and founded what became Planned Parenthood, long demonised now by the GOP

The GOP deliberately swooped in to grab the white supremacist Southern Democrats after Kennedy / LBJ's civil rights laws,
hence the 2 main parties doing 180 degree turns and swapping roles.

In contrast, most UK Tories remain comparatively socially liberal,
which hides how rightwing they are economically - that fools a lot of people, a lot of the time

QueenOfThorns · 15/06/2019 14:06

Queen too much dystopian tv there !!!

Ha ha, you’re right! The only reason I’m watching Years and Years is because I’m in love with the house. It’s very near to here and I desperately wanted to buy it a few years back when it came on to the market. Sadly, the required lottery win didn’t materialise!

Stockpiling crisps and treats can work around here, but I’ll need to find a new place for the stash because DH knows where I had it last time Grin

LoonvanBoon · 15/06/2019 14:08

Surely Richard Tice could 'win' by just giving his MEP salary to charity if he wants, without having to make a big deal about it on Twitter?

FiveAcorns · 15/06/2019 14:12

PMK

BigChocFrenzy · 15/06/2019 14:37

I'm baffled, howabout
There are umpteen things for a Lexiter to post that support Brexit, without all your sympathetic posts about / from Faragists, ERG

  • i.e. those on the hard right / fascists who should be complete anathema to anyone on the left / centre

Why not post about Lexiters e.g. Corbyn, Milne, Frank Field etc - who don't praise the hard right or indeed any Tories

Why not post about possible Lexiter policies after Brexit:
renationalisation, taxing the rich more after Brexit, reversing cuts and the growing wealth gap ?

I am very interested in how Brexiters like Hoey - who I previously thought centre left - have since the ref campaign supported the hard / far right
Is that your political journey ?

Is this a permanent shift, or will Lexiters like Hoey return to normal politics after Brexit ?
Will Hoey - and you ? - support Labour on NC votes and in the GE ?

fwiw:
If Farage suddenly switched to Revoke, I would still fiercely oppose him & his party - Brexit doesn't trump all my other principles
I'd still not have a good word to say about crooked Boris, if he Revokes.

wherearemychickens · 15/06/2019 14:37

I have definitely learnt from the last stockpiling experience - won't be buying /any/ chocolate until the last week of October. All that happened was I stress ate it all, replenished, ate it all again, etc etc.

wherearemychickens · 15/06/2019 14:38

Have also learnt that tinned veg are not popular in this house

QueenOfThorns · 15/06/2019 14:57

Tinned sweetcorn is fine, wherearemychickens. Also, frozen green beans are good, but I have already mentioned the way my family feels about frozen broccoli. I think everyone on the thread agreed on that one!

howabout · 15/06/2019 15:18

wherearemychickens I stopped eating chocolate and eventually lost interest avoiding the need to hoard it altogether.

Agreed on both tinned sweetcorn and broccoli Queen. My lot think frozen green beans taste like rubber. We all prefer frozen brussel sprouts though.

howabout · 15/06/2019 15:24

LoonVan if he doesn't announce it on twitter he'll get accused of hypocrisy for being an MEP trousering his meagre stipend while being overtly critical. I very much doubt any charity he chose himself would escape accusations of having been "bought off by the Faragists" or they would take the opportunity to attract "attention seeking Remoaner Z-lister" donations with a "virtue signalling" refusal.

pointythings · 15/06/2019 15:48

Frozen broccoli is the food of the devil. I hate it. Many types of veg do work well frozen though.

I have been maintaining my stocks and will be upping what I have starting in the autumn.

Basil your comment about flexibility and choice sounds a tiny little bit like the Brexiter mantra about how we've all become spoiled and soft and the wartime generation were so much more resilient... I like having choice. I resent having it taken away from me when it doesn't need to be.

Peregrina · 15/06/2019 15:56

the wartime generation were so much more resilient...

And it's one thing having to be resilient and go without because we were fighting an evil dictator; quite another because of a handful of greedy white men in the Tory party wanting more, more, more, and a weak Prime Minister (Cameron) who caved into them.

howabout · 15/06/2019 15:57

If you like choice don't go voting Green pointy or the sugar tax will be the least of your worries.

howabout · 15/06/2019 16:02

Noel Gallagher, who says he would have voted Remain: "But the thing that is taking place after that [vote] is frankly a disgrace. It's a disgrace when you see people trying to get that vote overturned. Because that's fascism. Straight up. Pure and simple.”

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/music-nightlife-news/noel-gallagher-interview-oasis-brexit-16419197.amp?__twitter_impression=true

Lots I agree with and disagree with in this article. However I completely agree that it was 9/11 and the reaction to it which changed the political climate.

howabout · 15/06/2019 16:06

And in that vein I agree with Grace Blakeley (not Noel):

The people of this country have borne witness to dozens of ill-planned imperialist wars that have made the world a more - not less - dangerous place.

Corbyn’s non-interventionism is common sense to most people - and that terrifies the warmongers.

Basilpots · 15/06/2019 16:12

Pointy not excusing it just trying to reason that we are not going to starve !!

I completely resent having this inflicted on us. As a small business owner we rely on expensive materials and parts being readily and quickly available so we do not have to tie up valuable cash flow. There is no Uk alternatives for these. No ‘Blitz spirit’ is going to make up for that.

1tisILeClerc · 15/06/2019 16:16

{ It's a disgrace when you see people trying to get that vote overturned. Because that's fascism.}

I would ask what you realistically expect the UK to be like when the UK leaves, and how it will be so much better.
I realise I am wasting pixels in asking though.
