Brexit is such a huge distraction it's easy to forget Johnson would be in charge of other matters too. I suppose I'm just imagining Brexit will be Boris' downfall as it was May. Here's fucking hoping.

LouiseCollins28 · 13/06/2019 13:41

Good question Red, re continuing the contest. FWIW I think it will continue for now, for certain certainly another round. Am I right in thinking that the bar gets raised to 36 votes for round 2? My sense is that the Conservative Party won't want another "coronation" in succession after May.

Hasenstein · 13/06/2019 13:42

Ken Clarke doesn't have a mobile?!?

I thought I was the last surviving non-mobiler.

My admiration for him increases exponentially.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/06/2019 13:42

I'm just imagining Brexit will be Boris' downfall as it was May.

Well so far he's emulating her path:

  1. Sticking to an unrealistic deadline.
  2. Thinking the EU will bend it's constitution for our benefit. It won't.
  3. If rumours are correct he wants an early election too.
placemats · 13/06/2019 13:44

If Boris gets in, well when he gets in, he will be the worst Prime Minister of all time, and the shortish in power.

I'm beginning to think that the Tories don't like him.

CrocodileClips · 13/06/2019 13:45

Hopefully! I wonder if he's a popular choice because people are happy to see him as a fall guy.

wheresmymojo · 13/06/2019 13:45

If you had to who would you vote for out of:

Boris v Hunt
and
Boris v Gove

???

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/06/2019 13:46

Shit.

TheABC · 13/06/2019 13:48

On the plus side, watching Trump flounder around is fun.

megletthesecond · 13/06/2019 13:51

I may have just mouthed "fuck" at the tv news in our office reception.

woman19 · 13/06/2019 13:51

Guess which other famous historical 'populist' gained power through 'annointment' rather than election? Wink

Britain is getting the PM it deserves.

placemats · 13/06/2019 13:51

Obviously Johnson will be a shit prime minister, however I'm beginning to think that this might pave the way for Farage and his ilk to worm their way through. I never thought I would say this ever as I left the Labour Party because of him, but it now seems likely that Corbyn is our only hope.

Welcome to a New World Order.

LouiseCollins28 · 13/06/2019 13:51

@wheresmymojo. I'd vote for Hunt or Gove in preference to Boris.

bellinisurge · 13/06/2019 13:52

If I had to vote between Johnson and Hunt/Gove I would probably write " you are all utter wankers but Hunt/Gove are, at least, barely competent wankers whereas Johnson is like every incompetent posh knob I have ever met who can barely dress themselves ".
Does that fit on a ballot paper and would anyone care?

At least my dh is on board with the stash and dd is ok as long as it has chocolate in it. Which is actually my private view too.

EarClipper · 13/06/2019 13:52

He will have a 30 second 'what ho, old bean, I've made it to No.10. chortle, chortle' honeymoon before Brexit starts to consume him. Brexiters are already turning on those they feel aren't Brexit ultra enough. I'm not sure Johnson will escape this.

Peregrina · 13/06/2019 13:53

Johnson wants an early election and with a majority of only just over 5,000 you can bet the other parties will be piling in to attempt to unseat him.

RedToothBrush · 13/06/2019 13:55

Ciaran Jenkins @c4ciaran
Rory Stewart says if Boris Johnson locks the doors of parliament to get No Deal he will ‘bring him down’..

Stewart says parliament will meet across the road at Methodist Central Hall and bring a Boris Johnson government down.

There are a number of reasons why this is problematic as a statement. And abject lunacy.

Nice soundbite though.

facepalm

Peregrina · 13/06/2019 13:57

Methodist Central Hall might not be willing to hire the rooms out!

placemats · 13/06/2019 13:58

It's a lovely hall though.

EarClipper · 13/06/2019 13:59

Would he dare prorogue parliament? I mean that's totalitarian state stuff. Blatant totalitarian stuff rather than the sneaky anti democracy we've seen in the last few years.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 13/06/2019 14:00

I think you’re right. He’s going to go for an early election.

EarClipper · 13/06/2019 14:00

I'd never even heard the word 'prorogue' until a few months ago!

prettybird · 13/06/2019 14:00

Just had a disagreement discussion with dh on the parliamentary arithmetic, which doesn't change whoever the Tory leader is and the consequent need for a GE.

I was arguing pointing out that BoJo's best chance to break the parliamentary logjam would be to hold a GE immediately (and Corbyn would collude to override the FTPA Hmm). It would be a gamble but he might get a bounce and an increased majority Shock. The longer he leaves it, the fewer seats the Conservatives would win Grin

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 13/06/2019 14:03

red we are also running down the stockpile in case we move.

It’s been interesting. I haven’t done a supermarket shop since 31/3, although I have picked up bits from the local shops.
It’s been really good having spare loo roll/washing powder/soap etc to hand whenever needed.
We are still eating the cheese and butter I filled the fridge with before 31/3 and it’s fine. Tinned veg on the other hand has been very unpopular with the family, no matter how I try to disguise it.

I’m scared about October now though.

placemats · 13/06/2019 14:04

If Johnson calls for an immediate election I will renew my Labour Party membership and vote for them. With a peg on my nose.
