Jack Doyle @jackwdoyle
Outside the 1922 committee Rory Stewart insists he’s already got the 17 MPs he needs to get through the first round, but with the caveat ‘if everyone does what they say they’re going to do’.

There's a turnup for the books!

I didn't think he'd get enough to officially stand. But he reckons he can get through to the NEXT round now too.

I mean no wonder Leavers come across as so angry , its like constantly having an argument with yourself Wink

Emilyontmoor · 10/06/2019 18:59

DG GUS, a branch of the Wolfson empire (Lord Wolfson was one of Thatchers favourites) had a human resources process for interviewing candidates for internal promotion which consisted of a series of rounds of interviews where two candidates had to present a case why they would be better at the job than the other candidate. The one who presented the best case went to the next round where they met another winner in front of the same interviewers. This went on for several rounds and apparently at first was reasonably rational but after several rounds the candidates had nothing sensible left to say but to dig for dirt and insult the other. They were quite open that the process was to find the most ruthless alpha male - now I suppose they would ask if you were happy to join a hunger games organisation. Its not far off that now but if Gove and Boris get through to the last two we might actually see blood.......

yolofish · 10/06/2019 19:09

I am quite worried. I listened to Gove today, laying out his case, and I thought quite a lot of what he said was quite sensible. Should I have more Wine? Or am I just ground down by the whole bloody thing?

borntobequiet · 10/06/2019 19:16

That’s Gove’s special trick. Appears to be reasonable and then turns into a cross between Faust and Professor Branestawm, destroying all around with his patented mix of arrogance and incompetence.

Ellie56 · 10/06/2019 19:23

yolofish You should always have more wine. Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/06/2019 19:56

"Ex-Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab said he was "a committed Brexiteer" who could be trusted to secure the UK's departure. He also unveiled plans to redirect £500m a year from the aid budget to create an international wildlife fund."

So Johnson wants to rob lower income people to fund higher income people while Raab wants to rob those really suffering from war and catastrophes to save animals.

Torres through and through, aren't they.

tobee · 10/06/2019 20:20

How did we come to this we ask not for the first time ? 😩😩😩

1tisILeClerc · 10/06/2019 20:32

Any muppet can get the UK out of the EU but the issue is making the UK a worthwhile place to live for many.

OublietteBravo · 10/06/2019 20:52

From the Guardian:
“The health secretary [Matthew Hancock] remains a relative outsider, but the longer the race goes on, the more he gains ground for the seemingly basic virtues of being apparently competent and broadly similar to a normal human being” ShockConfusedGrin

NoWordForFluffy · 10/06/2019 20:55

...apparently competent and broadly similar to a normal human being

Everything I aspire to in life!

borntobequiet · 10/06/2019 20:56

The local Arts Centre has recently featured The Producers. I’m certain that the parallel has been drawn before between the idea of a production so bad it must fail, put on by fraudsters whose sole motive is to make a quick buck, only for it to succeed, and Brexit.

Ellie56 · 10/06/2019 21:03

...apparently competent and broadly similar to a normal human being

Quite a feat for a politician.

GaspodeWonderCat · 10/06/2019 21:09

Tory leadership
1st ballot Thurs 13 June: each of the 10 has to get at least 16 nominations to get through to the next round. Mathematically it is possible (10 candidates x 16 votes = 160 and there are 313 Tory MPs). But some may not get the 16 so will drop out and the candidate with fewest votes will also drop out.
2nd ballot 18 June: each of the survivors has to get 32 nominations and then further rounds of voting (19 & 20 June) until there are only 2. Then it goes to the Tory membership who will elect our next Prime Minister?

This is my understanding of the 'joy' to come in the next few weeks. Is it correct?

The rightwing Bow Group think-tank estimated the average age of a Conservative member is 72.

TheABC · 10/06/2019 21:16

I was listening on radio 4 to the spokesman for Gov and BoJo. Apparently there would not be a successful no confidence vote as the new party leader would have "an overwhelming mandate from party members."

In other words "please, please don't try it." It looks like Corbyn's gamble on the Tory party tearing itself apart before Labour does could come true. Especially if he convinced the DUP that a hard-line Brexit leader will break up the Union.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/06/2019 21:18

I'm concerned that reports last year estimated the Tory Party membership to be 70,000-100,000

but now we are told it's 160,000

Did they just count badly last year and / or have a lot of Brexit supporters taken the online advice and infiltrated them ?

OublietteBravo · 10/06/2019 21:21

What? Even if the final vote ultimately ends up split 52%/48%? Oh, wait....

BigChocFrenzy · 10/06/2019 21:21

Reportedly the Tory moderates would not vote to bring down a new Brexiter leader - even Boris - unless they actually go for No Deal.

That of course risks them waiting until it's too late and e.g. the PM & Corbyn hatch a plot to force Brexit by calling a GE and dissolving the HoC.

That isn't going to happen, both parties are going to avoid a GE like the plague.

TheABC · 10/06/2019 21:25

@BigChocFrenzy, that membership age statistic is shocking, but I am not surprised by it. The policy list reads like deliberate alienation of the under 35s.

I am a little over 35 and a homeowner - and I would still not vote Tory even for a unicorn with sprinkles on it. Neither will my younger, pro-Brexit sister!

I joined earlier this year, along with several of my friends. We’re all remain supporters. Our aim was to block hardline ERG no-dealers (and Boris) in the leadership contest. Perhaps we’re not alone?

borntobequiet · 10/06/2019 21:31

There’s a good reason Johnson’s tax cuts benefit wealthy pensioners more than any other group. Shameless git that he is.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/06/2019 21:36

The people who hold UK’s Brexit destiny in their hands

imo, Tory members seem more like religious fanatics than a conservative party

The party is in the final stages of dementia, with a grim death to follow oon

These charts show members strongly against the better off paying to help the poor
and also in favour of the death penalty

Boris seems their favourite

https://www.politico.eu/article/people-uk-brexit-tory-members/

Tory members are furious about what they regard as an establishment stitch-up over Brexit

The mood in the party is one of simmering rage at what they regard as the treachery of an unconsummated Brexit
and British sovereignty denied — blocked by Westminster, the civil service and the Tory leadership.

In short: The quintessential party of the British establishment is convinced it has been thwarted by that very establishment.
