They mentioned the average age of Con membership on the Daily Politics last week and they said it was 57. Which was about 2 years older than Lib Dems and 4 years older than Labour. So not as old as you might think.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/06/2019 21:46

"both parties are going to avoid a GE like the plague"

You are assuming rationality from the Tories

Predictions based on rationality - or concern for the country - have not worked in the UK or USA since June 2016

The Tory party membership and most of its MPs have become more like a religious movement who will sacrifice everything for Brexit

Corbyn and his gang have always pushed for a GE:

they think Brexit may destroy the Tory party for a generation, even permanently.
They are looking at the GE the year after Brexit and are prepared to lose a GE this year, to gain power permanently after economic disaster.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/06/2019 21:51

The Bow Group - who estimate age 72 - are a rightwing Tory think tank, so they should have insider info

Daily Politics - estimate 57 - aren't Tories, but may be more professional than the Bow Group

We don't know if either is correct, but we do know their voters and their members are older than those of other national parties
(The Faragists may be as old, but they aren't allowed to be members, or to vote for their leader & policies)

BigChocFrenzy · 10/06/2019 21:53

We know Tory voters average very much older than Lab, LDem, Grn, SNP

Clavinova · 10/06/2019 21:59

I read in a Parliamentary briefing paper recently that the average age of Conservative Party members was 57.

PestyMachtubernahme · 10/06/2019 22:14

Has anyone watched New Statesman recently?

NoWordForFluffy · 10/06/2019 22:15

There appears to be an echo in here!

I think I'm more inclined to believe the Tories' own think tank re the average age. I think. I don't really believe much these days!

Basilpots · 10/06/2019 22:21

Big worryingly Dominic Grieve revealed goes into some detail about ‘entryism’ on Remaniacs. He said Aron Banks funded some sort of Facebook campaign encouraging Brexiteers to join Tory party local associations and try and get ‘remainer’ MP’s deselected. Attacking from within if you will, in addition to the BXP causing problems externally no wonder they are in a world of trouble.

tobee · 10/06/2019 23:06

Surely the Tories would want a general election? Surely they want to lose and pass the shit show to anyone else Labour to try to figure out and not become unelectable for decades?

thethethethethe · 10/06/2019 23:29

Wow, that Politico article is scary. 100,000 odd largely elderly white men having so much influence over what happens to the whole country. Almost all of them against wealth distribution, and think that austerity has not gone far enough! If the Tory party carries on like this, what the hell will happen? Will people just put up with it?

LonelyTiredandLow · 11/06/2019 01:15

Basilpots I think it was Grieve who was ousted in that manner and IIRC several others around the country facing confidence votes in their own constituencies? Possibly why Farage won't allow members for BXP. Also potentially a weapon he intends to use in EU somehow?

Sostenueto · 11/06/2019 05:10

Think Jeremy Hunt is going to win leadership contest.

borntobequiet · 11/06/2019 05:24

As I say to my learners - whenever you hear the word average from the lips of a politician, you should ask “which average, and why?”
The median could in the case of Tory party members be rather lower than the mean.

borntobequiet · 11/06/2019 05:30

An example of this sort of practice: Nicky Morgan as Education Sec stating that the average teacher pay was £37500. That was the mean, skewed by all the high earning heads. The median was about £10000 less, not far off the National median wage. She quoted it while falsely claiming teachers were striking over pay (they weren’t).

hopefulhalf · 11/06/2019 06:05

That politico article is terrifying. So far removed from " normal" yet perceiving themselves as moral guardians the death penalty bit is particularly chilling.

hopefulhalf · 11/06/2019 06:07

and I hope rapidly making themselves unelectable.

Boris Johnson ‘Defied’ Party Chairman To Use Peterborough By-Election For His Leadership Campaign
Tory front-runner under fire over use of local candidate in launch video

The former foreign secretary and other contenders to replace Theresa May were told that to focus on anything other than helping local candidate Paul Bristow would be unhelpful.

A leaked email from the party chairman also suggested that any attempt to use Bristow in any leadership material could add to election expenses for the by-election.

However, Johnson did indeed feature the candidate in his campaign launch video, which was put out just days before polling day.

Tory members are furious about what they regard as an establishment stitch-up over Brexit

Does this mean that Tory Remainers are leaving and joining the LibDems? There were significant numbers of them.

Front runner Jeremy Hunt out for an early morning jog this morning, runs so fast his excellent close protection officers use bikes to keep up with him, now when Boris jogged from the same grace and favour home i could walk quicker !!! changing times

You definitely know its a Tory Election when they all start going out for runs. I'm convinced it's the only time they ever put on trainers, when they are going out for a
photoshoot run.

The illusive answer as to why Remainer Hunt isn't too bothered by No Deal:

www.buzzfeed.com/amphtml/alexwickham/jeremy-hunt-broke-anti-money-laundering-laws?bftwuk=&utm_term=4ldqpgm&__twitter_impression=true
Jeremy Hunt Has Remembered That He Broke Anti–Money Laundering Laws Last Year
The Tory leadership candidate assured reporters on Monday morning that he’d never broken the criminal law, but later clarified that in response to questions from BuzzFeed News.

In 2018, the Daily Telegraph reported that Hunt had initially failed to declare to Companies House his 50% interest in a property firm used to buy seven luxury flats, a criminal offence punishable by a fine or up to two years in prison.

He was reported to have breached the Companies Act by failing to declare to Companies House, the UK’s registrar for companies, that he was a “Person with Significant Control” (PSC) within 28 days of registering the firm. The government’s guidance on the legislation states: “Failure to do so is a criminal offence.”

A company registration document was incorrect because it failed to declare Hunt’s interest, also a criminal offence under the Companies Act.

“Failure to provide accurate information on the PSC register and failure to comply with notices requiring someone to provide information are criminal offences, and may result in a fine and or a prison sentence of up to two years,” the guidance says.

Companies House usually enforces these laws with a retrospective compliance-based approach rather than pursuing those who fail to initially declare their interests through the courts.

The rules were brought in by David Cameron’s government in June 2016 — while Hunt was serving in the cabinet — to clamp down on money laundering, tax evasion, and corruption.

When the laws were introduced, the business minister, Baroness Neville-Rolfe, said: “Companies that disguise who owns or controls them are not playing by the rules and have something to hide.

“This register, the first of its kind in the world, will help tackle abuse of corporate entities. This is part of our commitment to creating an environment of trust and accountability for business.”

In addition, Hunt failed to declare his interest to the parliamentary authorities.

I wonder how those Tory members in Kent will feel about becoming a vassal state of the USA?

RedToothBrush · 11/06/2019 08:48

Boris is refusing to debate. Something about blue on blue being a bad look for the party.

Senior Tory: "It was always likely the person to stop Boris was Boris. But they can't hide him away forever. We've just had one of those Prime Ministers. Didn't work out too well."
