these dickwads is how the missed the "God helps those that help themselves" bit in the Bible.

A bit like the joke about old joke (Dave Allan?) about the devout Christian, who, in major flooding, turning down in succession: leaving of his own accord after being warned about the imminent flooding; a row boat that came by to pick him up; a speed boat; a helicopter.... each time saying that the Lord would save him. When he gets to the Pearly Gates, St Peter asked him why he was there as he wasn't due there yet and he replies that the Lord forsook him, to which St Peter said, "But He sent you a warning, a row boat, a speed boat, a helicopter..... how much help do you want?!" ConfusedGrin

Or not to be so Christian in the analogy, it's like the old Muslim saying, "Tie up your camel THEN pray to Allah" Grin (PBUH)

ElenadeClermont · 02/06/2019 18:02

Thank you DGR. Sounds shocking. I just do not get that fervour.

borntobequiet · 02/06/2019 18:02

Woody Johnson - he of the “no-charm” charm offensive.

LonelyTiredandLow · 02/06/2019 18:07

So, maybe a sensible thing for the Tories to do would be to No Deal on 31st Oct (yes, not at the sensible bit yet obvs) then LOUDLY make a fuss about trading with USA to save our bacon, then congress says 'NO because GFA' then we have to sign WA and get back to at least negotiations with EU?

But then nothing changes WRT USA trading...which can't be completely what they had planned, other than wrecking EU and us Hmm. Quite the pickle .

LonelyTiredandLow · 02/06/2019 18:09

Of course in the interim I suspect the Tories will quickly sell off what they can of the NHS behind closed doors (prob declaring desperate times called for desperate measures and they wanted to improve heatlh due to surge of deaths), suddenly declare they have £££ to fund it again before signing the WA and we discover what we've lost.

I need some wine!

BigChocFrenzy · 02/06/2019 18:26

lonely all that would take at least a year, in which the UK economy would crash so far it would take years to recover

  • even a USA FTA in which the UK completely rolls over, takes time to be drafted, approved by both heads of govt and then be debated in Parliament and Congress

(normally an FTA takes 7-15 years from starting negotiations to approval)

LonelyTiredandLow · 02/06/2019 18:39

A year sounds about enough time for things to get bad enough for drastic measures to me. I am going on the basis that if I were a Tory and knew this would not end well, what would I do ASAP to benefit me and mine before the game was up.

LonelyTiredandLow · 02/06/2019 18:49

Leaver on my Facebook has just posted this - for those without fb it says "Bring back borstalls for the little bastards of today lets see how "hard" they are then"

I can now completely see how someone with these 'ideas' would vote for someone like Widdlecum and her "science will enable conversion therapy" ideology.

1tisILeClerc · 02/06/2019 18:53

{ in which the UK completely rolls over, takes time to be drafted, approved by both heads of govt and then be debated in Parliament}

Since the Wherrity sniffer has something 'up his somewhere' from his dealings in the USA which were to remain secret for 4 years (about a year has already elapsed) it could suggest that the bones of a USA deal have already been unofficially drafted. It would be interesting to know what Parliament would do with the inevitably shit deal that this (or a finalised version) would be. They didn't like the WA, which isn't actually a 'deal' but the outlines of what needs discussing (with a proposed end point).

DGRossetti · 02/06/2019 18:55

Thank you DGR. Sounds shocking. I just do not get that fervour.

And if you tried to intervene you'd be the arsehole.

Any senseless death is a tragedy, and I am well aware of the fact there are real people behind these stories. People who grieve, people who cry. People who have lost a father, a son, a brother. But ultimately, what can you do ?

Tie up your camel THEN pray to Allah"

The version I heard is ^pray to Allah but tie up your camel" - which uses the infinite nuance of English to subtly shift the emphasis in my opinion.

1tisILeClerc · 02/06/2019 18:57

{Widdlecum and her "science will enable conversion therapy" ideology.}

Like the 'UK establishment' treatment of Alan Turing to 'cure' his tendencies?

DGRossetti · 02/06/2019 18:59

Like the 'UK establishment' treatment of Alan Turing to 'cure' his tendencies

Which, since Gordon Browns ill-judged "pardon" will quietly be airbrushed out of history, in my opinion. It was Turing he was pardoning. It was the British state. Which doesn't deserve it.

LonelyTiredandLow · 02/06/2019 19:00

Quite.
So much hatred and intolerance. So many similarities to USA. Authoritarianism from people who would baulk at doing National Service themselves.

thethethethethe · 02/06/2019 19:00

.

1tisILeClerc · 02/06/2019 19:06

This sort of ties in with DGR's comment. Quite interesting:

LonelyTiredandLow · 02/06/2019 19:30

Very interesting. I also like the top pick comment re Patriotism vs Nationalism.

jasjas1973 · 02/06/2019 20:52

Visa applicants hoping to travel to the US will now have to submit phone numbers and all SM usernames for years as part of their applications

I'd have thought this could be done in any country under the guise of national security to find out who supports what and who, i doubt any BRX MPs will be voting against PM Farages new Citizens Information and Intelligence bill introduced in 2023

Songsofexperience · 02/06/2019 21:03

Strictly speaking both words broadly have the same meaning but patriotism has a Greek etymology whereas nationalism has a Latin one.
However I agree they've somehow taken on different shades. For me patriotism is about being house proud and a gracious host. Nationalism is about building the highest fence and getting the most vicious dogs to keep people out, even if your place is a shithole no one would want to trespass into.

yolofish · 02/06/2019 21:21

I like your analogy songs. I (used to) be vaguely proud of Britain, our tolerance, our laws etc. Not so much anymore.

RedToothBrush · 02/06/2019 21:30

I can't watch the news this weekend. The BBC efforts to normalise and sanitise Trump are too much for my blood pressure. And every time Farage pops up or Johnson pops up its even worse.

It's utterly horrendous.

So if I'm about minimal amounts this week, it's cos I'm trying to stay sane.

Trump wants to gut the UK. And we are treating him as if he has our interests at heart. Which is utter crap. We've seen how he's destroying the US and making its worse elements even more dreadful.

The thought of being the 51st state is more than I can stomach.

If the US get their claws into our health service it could affect woman's health care in particular.

It does not bare thinking about.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/06/2019 21:37

The UK is just the start .....

Trump's version of America first is to destroy any bloc that isn't US-controlled

This is an officially concerted effort ordered by Trump and being OPENLY carried out by his ambassadors in all EU countries

Amanda Sloatt@A*_Sloat

Trump Admin is relentlessly anti-#EUU^,
cheerleading for #Brexitt^ + encouraging other member states to leave or negotiate bilateral agreements with US
(which they can’t as EU members)

Marietje Schaakee@MarietjeSchaake*

US Ambassador to The Netherlands Hoekstra going against US-EU relation by suggesting a US-NL #tradee* deal would be closed in hours

(while individual Member States don’t negotiate trade deals, and neither do American states...)

(in Dutch)

BigChocFrenzy · 02/06/2019 21:39

The disgusting Trump is bringing all his adult children on his State Visit to the UK,
because he said he wants them to spend time with the younger Royals, William and Harry

BigChocFrenzy · 02/06/2019 21:42

He intends to use his State Visit to beam back to US homes how he is "honoured" abroad, by the British Royal family and all the British pageantry

It's a propoganda coup for him

He may continue to take swipes at our powerless Zombie PM and criticise her for not being aggressive with the EU, as he wants

jasjas1973 · 02/06/2019 21:44

BCF We are so weak! shameful really.
