Some context: US Press (NYT & Washington Post) are noting that the state visit is scaled down- no carriage down theMall, no overnight at B Palace. Trump is staying at Windfield house. White House has not asked for formal meetings with BJ, Farridge, but it is acknowledged that he may go off piste in his “substantial” free time. WH did not push an address to HoC.
The state visit agreed in principle in 2017 when TM was trying to curry favour.with US after Trump election, it has taken this long to get a date.
So mainstream US press has no illusions ; Fox News, NY Post might be different

How about his arrival at Stanstead, where the 'dodgy' flights get sent. Picked up in a black cab and accommodation in a B+B in Walthamstow?

Moanranger · 03/06/2019 04:47

Woodpigeons Love it!

Songsofexperience · 03/06/2019 04:57

He may continue to take swipes at our powerless Zombie PM and criticise her for not being aggressive with the EU, as he wants

May has nothing to lose. She would gain some respect from me if she publicly told him to not interfere in our country's politics.

Songsofexperience · 03/06/2019 04:58

I suspect that would actually earn her sone respect from him too.

What we could really do with is someone who has a plan for post-Brexit Britain. Seems to be a void...

Unfortunately, there are plenty of politicians who have plans for post Brexit Britain.

Peregrina · 03/06/2019 06:25

Just not the sort of plans that the general public would find palatable.

bellinisurge · 03/06/2019 06:41

I think "grow the fuck up" has been dismissed as a plan.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/06/2019 06:54

I think "grow the fuck up" has been dismissed as a plan.

Unfortunately!

bellinisurge · 03/06/2019 07:28

It's almost funny. Brexshit Party gets most MEPs thanks to an EU system of voting. The people voted not to change FPTP only recently (no need for yet another referendum, surely) and yet a change to FPTP is the only way Brexshit Party could be a significant force in Parliament.

bellinisurge · 03/06/2019 07:34

And, of course, Brexshiters are putting a FPTP interpretation on their success in the EU elections. Which doesn't stack up if you do simple maths and add up MEPs using the EU system of calculating success.

Hazardtired · 03/06/2019 08:05

Just come across this again, first saw it last year or the year before....

Nothing has changed!

Brexit is like a chronic disease. It's the UK getting arthritis.

lonelyplanetmum · 03/06/2019 08:27

This cheered me up. Love led by donkeys!

Brexit is like a chronic disease

Only because our media is telling us so ...

Tanith · 03/06/2019 08:50

Does anyone know what's happening regarding the estimated 67% of EU voters denied their vote?
I understand may also be concerns over postal votes, but I don't know anyone affected by that.

1tisILeClerc · 03/06/2019 08:55

lonelyplanetmum

Oh dear!

Mistigri · 03/06/2019 08:58

Tanith, latest from the British in Europe site is as follows - the3million and BiE are working together on this:

"We need as many examples of people having been denied their vote. If you were affected last Thursday, please tell your story at https://www.the3million.org.uk/deniedmyvotee_ or promote the page if know someone who was affected.
Alternatively, for British people abroad, wherever you live, you can email British in Europe at [email protected]g_
Our team of expert public law practitioners and researchers will go through the testimonials, and assess the best legal options to successfully challenge the Government. This will take about two weeks before we can make the decision whether to proceed with the legal challenge and start Funding Phase 2.
We will keep you updated so please watch this space!"

DGRossetti · 03/06/2019 08:58

Does anyone know what's happening regarding the estimated 67% of EU voters denied their vote?

For show, or for real ?

For show: A lot of hand wringing.
For real: Fuck all.

Nothing will happen. Ultimately, a votes value will be the cost of the ballot paper. Because if a persons vote was worth anything, then an election where a single lawful vote could not be cast should be voided. So Res ipsa loquitor

Tanith · 03/06/2019 09:11

Thank you, both Smile

I have a couple of friends who have been affected by this, but weren't sure what they could do about it. I have forwarded the link to them.

I hope something does come of it: it sets a dangerous precedence if nothing is done.

Mistigri · 03/06/2019 09:13

it sets a dangerous precedence

The precedent has been set for a number of years, since at least 2014 when many EU citizens were denied a vote and the electoral commission issued advice to councils as a result (widely ignored).

The problems with postal voting are not new either. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the only reliable way for the British in Europe to vote is by using a proxy, and even that is not 100% reliable.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/06/2019 09:21

There's a podcast of the London Lib Dem hustings for anyone who is interested.

1tisILeClerc · 03/06/2019 09:36

My local council was pretty efficient.
Shame it doesn't extend to getting potholes fixed and a load of other things it should be doing.
