he led Bush and Clinton in 1992 polls for a while
I remember the perot campaign. It was foolishly treated as a joke, including by me. I thought it pointed somewhere bad.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 19:40

I worked for a company in the 1990s that used EDS

  • the EDS guys all hated Perot and his rules about beards, many other rules too, a dictator as a company chief

Still, compared to the religious right, Trump, even the Bushes, Perot was a paragon of virtue

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 19:45

Perot led .... until he had to reveal his full range of policies

That's the same story of new parties or politicians, left, right or centre, from the old SDP to Farage:

They can initially collect a huge number of "soft" votes from people who hate the status quo, who think the new guys think like them

However, once the new guys reveal their policies, voters soon see it's much the same old shit in new wrappings

LonelyTiredandLow · 07/06/2019 19:47

A quick google of Perot bought up this rather apt quote. Also had a friend who worked for EDS and was asked to relocate to Texas. They declined. Also said how good the healthcare was and had a company car. Bet the productivity was high compared to others!

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 19:50

In Farage's case, many of his policies are just the racial / misogynist / homophobic insults you see scribbled on lavatory walls,

plus the economic policies from the hard right of the Tory party, which lose the Tories votes whenever they come out of the closet

Faragists agree on wanting a No Deal Brexit, but many of them won't like anything else Farage wants - which will come after Brexit

He has to keep his policies quiet for as long as possible
It helps that his new party has no members to question him, or form their own policies

ContinuityError · 07/06/2019 19:56

BigChocFrenzy DH knew some people that worked for Perot - he’d come round do the meet and greet, know their names and have something positive to say to them.

They were women, so probably didn’t have to worry so much about the beard thing though Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 19:56

Fraser Nelson : Away from Brexit, all the main contenders are united in their support for liberal conservatism

Well, that's what the Torygraoh thinks liberal conservatism is !
Others might disagree and think calling shit something else doesn't stop it stinking

Tories trying to reinvent themselves for after Brexit ?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/06/06/next-tory-leader-will-owe-far-cameron-thatcher/

It’s still unclear who will win the Tory leadership but it is, by now, becoming clear what will win.

Liberal Conservatism is back in the ascendancy,
proclaimed not just by Boris Johnson but almost anyone who hopes to beat him. Hmm
< liar, liar, pants on fire >

LonelyTiredandLow · 07/06/2019 19:58

Which is where, I suspect, legally his Contract should be in place to inform his donors of their part in the exchange of goods or services...from a company commercial perspective at least? Where is TiP "send us a sign !"

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 20:02

Continuity The ones I knew were in Germany, so had never met him afaik,
They were just horrified by a lot of intrusive / oppressive rules & standards that their US colleagues had to obey, but German employees didn't

In Germany, excellent sick pay, health insurance etc is the norm, so those benefits wouldn't have impressed anyone either

Americans - and Brits - are used to putting up with far more shit from employers,
but the works councils in Germany and the powerful unions don't allow this.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 20:04

Tip was banned, SadAngry but lurks sometimes and EMs a couple of us

ContinuityError · 07/06/2019 20:28

Your German colleagues would be (rightfully) horrified about US workers rights.

I remember DH having his US induction and his boss saying “we have 2 weeks holiday but nobody takes it” Hmm. DH negotiated 4 weeks and we took it.

HagridsBigToe · 07/06/2019 21:28

I have a friend who moved to the USA from the UK. His new co-workers were SHOCKED that 6 weeks minimum holiday is standard in the UK and that we get at least 6 months paid maternity, plus sickness leave.
He gets 2 weeks a year now, his wife got 6 weeks maternity (unpaid- she could have taken up to 12, but they couldn't afford it) and if they are sick, they have to use a holiday day.

SistemaAddict · 07/06/2019 21:36

TIP is still banned??

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 21:40

afaik, TiP is permanently banned

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 21:43

My current job in Germany, I get 32 days holiday + public holidays Smile

  • I have a flexitime account of +/-60 hours which enables additional days

This is fascinating from @cjayanetti
- the Brexit Party is performing strongly amongst Leavers in the Shires, but poorly amongst Leavers in more working class areas.

A challenge to the narrative of working class revolt?

https://www.politics.co.uk/comment-analysis/2019/06/05/brexit-party-weak-spot-data-analysis-shows-where-farage-unde

[EP] there are certain types of area where Farage's party did particularly well, and certain types of area where it did particularly badly - and it's not based on whether places voted to Leave or Remain.

ContinuityError · 07/06/2019 22:11

afaik, TiP is permanently banned

That’s unbelievably poor, even by MN standards of moderation.

Peregrina · 07/06/2019 22:13

- the Brexit Party is performing strongly amongst Leavers in the Shires, but poorly amongst Leavers in more working class areas.

Is this telling us that it's the comfortably off (ex) Tories who are supporting them? The Tory support for Leave from the South East has been consistently under reported.

SistemaAddict · 07/06/2019 22:30

So TiP is banned yet so many PBP are frequently posting GF threads on AIBU or FWR or Relationships. HQ are unbelievable sometimes. I don't believe she was racist (if Ive remembered correctly what she was banned for) and I bet it was some goady fucker brexshitter who got her banned Angry

^^this threads needs some common sense if anyone fancies heading over!

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 07/06/2019 22:51

I've been keeping away for a bit and just saw the Rory Stewart opium and Michael Gove coke news. I figured I'd come on here to see what has been said and nothing on Gove at least. Going to assume I've gone insane and will wake up to discover that was all an odd dream!

SistemaAddict · 07/06/2019 22:53

When's the next scheduled GE? I imagine that no matter what happens next, that it will be all change again come a GE. Probably not a positive change though.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 07/06/2019 22:54

Also, can't believe tip is banned. She helped me so much on other threads and though forthright, I never saw anything dodgy in what she'd said. Its really sad, especially when others pull blatant stuff and weasel out of it staying on.

bercows I caught that early on and thought most of the responses were showing sanity! Assume its gone downhill.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 22:59

Bercow Next GE must be on or before 5 May 2022
