Win or lose, the court case has drawn a lot of attention to the fact that the £350mil claim on the bus was a lie.

To what end ? It won't change a single persons mind. Brexiteers will just wibble on about something, and Remainers had it pegged as a fib from the off. Is the referendum annulled ?

Southwestten · 07/06/2019 15:44

What will happen to the crowd funded money for Boris’s court case - or has it already been used up in legal fees?

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 16:08

but this adverb is wrong:

"An institution the UK voted decisively to leave in June 2016."

LonelyTiredandLow · 07/06/2019 16:15

So, come 31st October and Farage is out of a job, what exactly does he intend to do? Hmm

MrPan · 07/06/2019 16:30

I think there is a lot of value in it having been "confirmed" that the bus was a lie. there are A LOT of people out there who don't know which way to face, but the public revelation that Johnson possibly lied about the sum to the NHS, when compared to Trump staking a claim on the NHS, could be a whammy toward facing the right way.

DGRossetti · 07/06/2019 16:41

I think there is a lot of value in it having been "confirmed" that the bus was a lie.

Value or worth ?

I know there has been some anecdotal evidence on these threads (one poster springs to mind) about one vote that was swayed by the use of "NHS" on the bus, with the Big lie Number.

However, write large I can't see the fact it has been accepted as a lie will make the slightest jot of difference. The moving hand has writ, etc. (Hopefully quoting Omar is irritating a few Brexiteers).

The lack of any interest by the BBC in this as a story is sort of proving me right.

For me, the most interesting information after yesterdays result, is the poll upthread showing that it doesn't really matter who is Tory leader, the Tories electoral chances are equally dismal. I say interesting, but that is more amusing too. So MPs really have got very little to use in making a decision. Do they back Boris ? Well they can, but there's no sign it makes them more electable. Or do they swerve the other way - but again, they won't have the warm feeling of making a choice for the next election.

The80sweregreat · 07/06/2019 16:44

Nigel Farage doesn't really care about his MEP job that much from what I can make out and read over the years. His made a fortune already ( and was rich to start with) I'm sure he'll just retire and rumble around the edges doing interviews / guest spots on political programmes every election time.

RedToothBrush · 07/06/2019 16:48

Re Farage and his radio show.

You could argue it breaks ofcom rules for a party leader to have such a show. Impartially in broadcasting and all that.

Well he cares enough to claim his salary and expenses.

By their actions ye shall know them ...

The80sweregreat · 07/06/2019 16:59

Oh I do agree with you ; his quick to ridicule the EU but happy to take the salary and perks!

prettybird · 07/06/2019 17:05

He'll also be pretty quick to squeal if he doesn't get his pension Hmm

LonelyTiredandLow · 07/06/2019 17:07

I just somehow don't believe that will be the end of him . I guess the worry is that after we leave he decides on some some manifestos/clauses and beefs out his usefulness?

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2019 17:08

I think the interesting point is that Leave obviously claimed the NHS as their battleground at the referendum, to great effect. Looking at a few vox pops from Peterborough it seems Remain parties / remain candidates may have successfully seized it back. Well done, Donald. I am sure that's what you cunningly intended. I think that's why Nige is fuming.

DGRossetti · 07/06/2019 17:11

Imagine if MEPs had to swear an oath to uphold the principles of the EU to be able to sit ?

DGRossetti · 07/06/2019 17:18

Here's an odd thing ...

DW and I were chatting last night, and Ross Perot was mentioned (this is going to be one for the anally retentive politics nerds Grin) ... anyway, I was trying to remember which year he ran for US president in a 3 horse race (I've just remembered we were talking about Trump and BoJo not quite meeting, and how BoJo could have had a shot at US president ....)

anyway I was surprised in hindsight to see how incredibly liberal he was/is (and younger than I recall) by US standards. Obviously he could never be allowed to win, but that's an evenings game of "what if" if you like.

I had an interview with EDS back in the 1990s. They had a pretty unique take on healthcare :

We at EDS realise that people work best when happy, and two of the greatest sources of happiness are health and family. Therefore EDS healthcare covers you and your family as standard

It wasn't insurance-driven. The manager said "if you need treatment we pay. That's it".

Anyway, I was mildly surprised BoJo decided to throw away any chance of being POTUS.

Is it bad luck or serendipity that the by election came so soon after Trumps visit ? Plus the mythic status of 6th June. How many years does 6th June fall on a Thursday ?

Fuck it, may as well use astrology.

Hasenstein · 07/06/2019 17:32

DGR

(Hopefully quoting Omar is irritating a few Brexiteers).

Won't make any impact. I've been shouting "Awake!" at them for years.

woman19 · 07/06/2019 17:44

Value or worth

@davidallengreen
No sensible person could defend Johnson's falsehoods from a political or moral perspective.

But that did not mean that the falsehoods could be shoe-horned into the offence of misconduct in public office.

@davidallengreen
Boris Johnson prosecution halted. The case is over.

The only surprise is that it got this far.

@JolyonMaugham
Ball has crowdfunded for two short hearings, one in the High Court and one in the Magistrates' Court, well over double what the Wightman case - which involved around a dozen hearings all in the higher courts - cost. Will he provide a full account of where the money has gone?

Nowt so daft as folk

It's an equal opportunities brexit at least; opportunities for daft on both sides Smile

lonelyplanetmum · 07/06/2019 18:23

Imagine if MEPs had to swear an oath to uphold the principles of the EU to be able to sit ?

But would they follow the principles of Sinn Fein and refuse to take their seats if there was an appropriate oath?

DGRossetti · 07/06/2019 18:25

But would they follow the principles of Sinn Fein and refuse to take their seats if there was an appropriate oath?

Well they could,

Alternatively, they could be suspended for not following it. It will probably be the wrong stance, but I'd trust Sinn Feins integrity over any Brexiteers any day.

ContinuityError · 07/06/2019 18:30

Re Farage and his radio show.

He makes a shed load from his “media career”. Way more than from being an MEP. I suspect his company accounts due next year will show around £600k for media earnings over the last year.

Ross Perot

Ross Perot, way to go!

We were on holiday in the States and some US TV company nabbed DH on the streets for a vox pop - they loved his Ross Perot way to go and big thumbs up, until they realised he wasn’t American Smile

LonelyTiredandLow · 07/06/2019 18:35

I hear May has formally handed in her resignation!

woman19 · 07/06/2019 18:45

Was that some kind of a joke?
"Chicken feathers, deep voodoo and the American Dream"
www.c-span.org/video/?34277-1/perot-campaign-commercial-1992

Crackers gonna cracker.

Don't do Perot, kids.

BestIsWest · 07/06/2019 18:55

I worked for EDS for a while. They were actually not a bad company to work for. One of my colleagues had to retire through ill health aged 50 and they paid her 95% of her salary until her actual retirement age.

There was a bit of weirdness around beards and flesh coloured tights but that disappeared after a time.

ContinuityError · 07/06/2019 19:06

Was that some kind of a joke?

Absolutely. But he led Bush and Clinton in 1992 polls for a while.
