Amazed conservatives did that well

dreichuplands · 07/06/2019 02:15

That is a relief, even if you aren't a JC enthusiast.

RedToothBrush · 07/06/2019 02:19

Higher turnout = Not so good for Farage

Can't win Peterborough? Raises a lot of qs...

Trump effect? Lots of people seeing him eyeing us up in a post Brexit world.

tobee · 07/06/2019 03:11

Increased majority for Labour

Fiona Onasanya majority 607
Lisa Forbes majority 683

Sostenueto · 07/06/2019 05:15

Well glad labour hung on in Peterborough.
Glad Trump visit over.
So very proud of veterans at D day remembrance true to say they were the greatest generation along with those of the First World War. Their like will not be seen again.Flowers
The more I listen to the Tory candidates for Priminister the more I think they are the most stupid, incompetent politicians ever.

borntobequiet · 07/06/2019 05:42

Well perhaps the Labour fence sitting paid off here.
Will the BBC still be featuring Farage at every opportunity now he’s shown that yet another of his personal project parties can’t win a seat in a GE?

borntobequiet · 07/06/2019 05:46

I posted this on another thread because I find the colour footage of WW2 mesmerising. (My father wouldn’t watch colour footage of a destroyer on D-day because he found it so traumatising - he was on one. After the war he abandoned his former aim to become a paediatrician and trained as a psychiatrist instead.)

Peregrina · 07/06/2019 05:57

Thank God for that result.

At first glance it looks as though Tory defectors went Brexit; Labour split to LibDem, Green and some Brexit. This despite the BBC talking up the Brexit party as much as it can. From the coverage we heard in the run up, I wasn't even sure that the Labour party were putting up a candidate, until yesterday when I read that they had a good operation on the ground to get the vote out. Otherwise, it was all Brexit/Farage. This is a Leave central area too.

Peregrina · 07/06/2019 05:59

A good example of how EU election votes, don't translate to GE ones - despite their shambolic behaviour the Tories still got a respectable vote.

borntobequiet · 07/06/2019 06:06

Infuriated by the 6am news talking up how well Brexit party did. Have sent a cross email.

Peregrina · 07/06/2019 06:24

LABOUR HUNG ON. THE BREXIT PARTY DID NOT WIN.

I am shouting, I am sick of the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation. Labour ought to have been beaten in this by election - they weren't.
Farage and Greene were mardy about their failure too.

bellinisurge · 07/06/2019 06:32

Woke up to the need of Brexit Party loss in a big Leave area. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

NoWordForFluffy · 07/06/2019 06:38

Well done Peterborough! I'm relieved about that (even though it's Labour)! It will have definitely pissed on the BXP chips a bit (even if they're still as vocal / belligerent).

That result is a small glimmer of hope to me that the country hasn't gone entirely insane. It's close, but no cigar!

Eyewhisker · 07/06/2019 06:59

Yay! Labour won in a big leave area despite having their previous MP in jail. I did not expect that! Looks like Brexit may be another UKIP - great at Euro elections but not much else.

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2019 07:00

It is interesting how much this story is relegated on the national news. I can't imagine that would have been the case had BXP actually won!

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2019 07:02

The Labour win is the lowest vote share to win a seat since WW2 to be fair. Lab's share of vote did go down, so it is all lies, damned lies etc...

Still , a relief.

UKIP got 400 votes.

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2019 07:04

After my post, BBC have suddenly made it top story Grin

bellinisurge · 07/06/2019 07:04

You would think after all the Brexshiteers attempts to hijack WWII spirit and the fact that the previous Labour MP was a criminal, they would've romped home. Spin your way out of that one, fucking losers.

TemporaryPermanent · 07/06/2019 07:07

Massively big hand to all the local Labour organisers.

Let's hope Arron Banks and whoever gives him his pocket money decides buying British politics is too expensive.

I almost feel like becoming a local activist. I've done some leafleting before.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 07:24

The Faragists couldn't win !
even after riding the wave of the EP hype and even though the previous MP was jailed- and it was one of Labour's most marginal

(I hope Corbyn doesn't take it as an endorsement of his Brexit no-policy)

Labour's seats look safer than we thought

especially in a GE when Farage Central will have to organise several hundred campaigns and local organisarions, not just one

  • like UKIP used to find, local party infrastructure matters in a GE with 630 GB seats

BUT
any Conservative seat that comes up in a byelection is in danger, whatever the majority

  • and any Tory marginal looks toast
MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 07/06/2019 07:27

Oh god what a relief re: Peterborough.

You lost, get over it, Nigel.

BestIsWest · 07/06/2019 07:30

Phew what a relief! How much of that was tactical voting from Remainer. Be fascinating to know.

LonelyTiredandLow · 07/06/2019 07:31

Woken up to great news!
Yes BigChoc - another No Deal by accident potentially coming up...

We should all be pushing this message I think - BXP loosing votes very fast for a new party; maybe lack of manifesto wasn't so great an idea after all?

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2019 07:31

With another big (%-wise) party sharing the votes, it is inevitable that the winning % would be down
BUT

the LDems did NOT get squeezed (by anti-Faragists choosing the strongest alternative) - in fact their % rose significantly
