All of us here in Ireland can relax now. According to Trump, the border will be fine and brexit will be good for Ireland.

According to RTE President Trump rejected the suggestion that Brexit would be bad for Ireland.

"I think it will be good, the big thing is going to be your border but hopefully that is going to work out and I think it will work out," he said.

"There are a lot of good minds thinking about how to do it and it's going to be just fine and I think ultimately it could even be very, very good for Ireland, but the border will work out."

Mind you, he did initially seem to suggest that we wanted a wall, just like he does and Varadkar had to correct him by telling him we didn't want a hard border.

I'd love to know who the good minds working on the border issue are because they've been very quiet regarding their suggested solutions.

MrPan · 06/06/2019 16:34

Its going to be just fine.....

He always repeats his last 'clause' of sentences, as if to 'confirm' their authenticity.

TheMShip · 06/06/2019 17:01

The new PM can't simply call a GE in order to force no deal. PP positing that scenario are scaremongering. Fixed term parliament act anyone? 2/3 of the HoC must agree. Or a NC vote called by the opposition gets a simple majority. Would enough MPs support either of those options if it meant inevitable no deal? I don't think so.

TheMShip · 06/06/2019 17:03

Though it could also be losing a Queen's speech or a budget vote, but again, would MPs bite?

Peregrina · 06/06/2019 17:23

I wonder if the Tory candidates threatening to prorogue Parliament to get No Deal through, would actually be allowed to do so? I suspect there would be very strong moves behind the scenes to stop it, with it all being very reminiscent of Charles I's time.

To be fair, there's been a lot of criticism of even the suggestion.

When even Amber Rudd says "We are not Stuart kings" when dismissing the idea, you realise it's a non starter.

I'm probably wrong - seems to be my lot in life - but I have a gut sense that if the government did try to prorogue parliament - which by necessity would involve the Monarch having to break with precedent - then even they realise it's a genie that won't go back in the bottle.

Peregrina · 06/06/2019 17:34

Any Leaver has a blatant nerve to even think of the idea. How many times have we heard them bleat about democracy and what don't we understand? We understand a damn sight more than 90% of them do.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/06/2019 17:42

Mship The new PM can call a GE if Corbyn agrees

  • and so far Corbyn's has been very eager for one

Also, Corbyn has said he will call an NC vote when we get a new PM
He could win that, or he and the PM could just agree on an early November GE

Remember, Corbyn wants Brexit, probably wants No Deal - Disaster Socialism -
and making this GE happen is maybe his best way to avoid party pressure for a PV

imo, there is insufficient Tory support for prorogue and presumably even Corbyn wouldn't go that far to force Brexit

BigChocFrenzy · 06/06/2019 17:45

We wouldn't be in this situation now if we had a "normal" Labour leader:

No Deal would have been ruled out by now, possibly Brexit too

At the very least, any other Labour leader would be far ahead in the polls and terrifying any Tory who doesn't have a whopping majority

thethethethethe · 06/06/2019 17:49

In some ways I think that Ireland will do well out of Brexit. My work is already going to Ireland instead.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/06/2019 18:08

Quite possibly.

I've read predictions that Ireland will have a tough 3-4 years, considerable upheaval,
but they have been promised generous EU help
and they will gain a lot of investment from abroad,
taking over our role as the main English-speaking member

BigChocFrenzy · 06/06/2019 18:11

Just met an English expat friend outside the bike shop

He proudly announced he will shortly be a German citizen

  • another STEM graduate added to Germany's total.

(his wife is Dutch, IT specialist and neither of them now wish to live in the UK)

LonelyTiredandLow · 06/06/2019 18:58

Another couple I know moved over a month ago - both STEM and x2 DC. They look so happy and settled! Must be lovely not to have such a heavy load hanging over you any more. Being able to watch the news and not wonder what Brexit related catastrophe is coming!

orangeshoebox · 06/06/2019 19:01

I moved recently to forrin.
it's bliss, like a big weight has lifted from my shoulders.

TheMShip · 06/06/2019 19:06

Corbyn may want no deal, but are enough MPs crazy enough to go for it?

ContinuityError · 06/06/2019 19:09

I wonder if the Tory candidates threatening to prorogue Parliament to get No Deal through, would actually be allowed to do so?

Bercow says not a chance.

Cailleach1 · 06/06/2019 19:19

Here are some pictures of my girl's fleecy tummy. To soothe the frayed nerves.

What Tory Brexiters want to copy and Brexit voters support - presumably they expect to be one of the rich minority

IMF: US economy is failing many citizens

https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2019/jun/06/car-industry-ford-bridgend-fiat-renault-trade-trump-xi-ecb-draghi-business-live?page=with:block-5cf9206c8f08af5c0e4e4433#block-5cf9206c8f08af5c0e4e4433

The increasingly polarised US economy has meant that a record-breaking period of growth has been accompanied by falling life expectancyy^, high levels of poverty and stagnant living standards for average Americans, the International Monetary Fund has said.

In its annual health check on the world’s biggest economy, the IMF highlighted a range of “troubling” social indicators marring a decade-long expansion which in July will be the longest in the country’s history.
....
. A decrease in wealth among the poorest 40% of the population since 1983.

. The fact that 45 million Americans live in poverty.

. An erosion of social mobility so that half of today’s young American adults earn less than their parents did at a similar age.
Forty years ago the figure was 10%.

LonelyTiredandLow · 06/06/2019 19:59

This is a glimpse into where we are heading if our courts don't start penalising flouting of electoral regulations Italy's far right attacks judges. Remember "enemies of the people" ...

Here in UK Bercrow seems to think that we can't No Deal unless Parliament votes for it which I have to say I'm a little Hmm over.

LonelyTiredandLow · 06/06/2019 20:02

Last sentence was unclear - as in, we are going to No Deal if we run out of time/don't sign the WA. I'm not sure anyone needs to prorogue Parliament?

Just realised I need to catch up with the thread as didn't refresh so you lot may have already answered this!

LonelyTiredandLow · 06/06/2019 20:11

Oh wow UK official in charge of Brexit border plans resigns - laugh or cry? Hardly a surprise.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/06/2019 20:21

BBC screening a live debate for the Tory party leadership: 8pm Tuesday 18 June

I wonder how many candidates then

Iambuffy · 06/06/2019 20:23

No idea bigchoc

I may stand myself. Why not? Every fucker else seems to be! 😡

BigChocFrenzy · 06/06/2019 20:25

From polls, Boris looks better than the other candidates at fighting off Farage

Interesting that the other parties - Labour, LDem, Green - are hardly affected by which Tory candidate is chosen

It's all about how the rightwing vote is distributed between Tory and Faragist
