yes, I wasn't sure why it was started on change and not the government one. But maybe the government one takes longer to go live - I think there is a bit of a waiting period once it's written. This might just be the first one up and running - and it's better to have a petition live whilst Donald is here rather than in a weeks time - but we can all sign both petitions should a government website one be forthcoming.

The new SDP doesn't seem to have anything in common with the old version at all - no idea why they're using the name

Perhaps they’re Brexiteer fifth columnists hoping to syphon off some votes from the LibDems from a few hapless members of the older generation who still think of the SDP and Liberals as synonymous!

Nigel Farage refuses to attend EU hearing into Arron Banks cash

Nigel Farage says he will not attend a committee investigating whether he broke European Parliament rules by accepting funding from Leave campaigner Arron Banks.
The Brexit Party leader has said he did not declare the £450,000 sum to the assembly because at the time, he was about to leave politics and had been seeking a new life in the US.

Oakenbeach · 04/06/2019 20:25

Reminds me of by-elections in the 1990s where there was a Conversative Party candidate and a Literal Democrat.

Of course, it’s easy to forget that a prospective PM “played along” about finding a journalist’s home address so that his chum could have him beaten him.

In a word Yes - it was 30 years ago, the address was not supplied, the journalist was not beaten up, and the recording has clearly been edited.

I am more concerned that John McDonnell was filmed only 6 years ago saying, "I am a Marxist."

Cailleach1 · 04/06/2019 20:40

Yep. The first thing I would say to someone who wanted me seek private information to put the frighteners up someone is 'How badly are you going to hurt them?' And I wouldn't be an accessory if it went very wrong, either. On planet zog.

Cailleach1 · 04/06/2019 20:42

It is not a crime to be a Marxist.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2019 20:45

A politIcian who conspires to beat up a journalist - illegal and alarming in a candidate for PM

A politician who openly says he's a Marxist - Legal
and those who oppose Marxism won't vote for him

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2019 20:52

A phone call instead of a meeting ..... a meeting that Boris turned down

Boris may still have the same opinion of Trump as when he was a presidential candidate in 2015 Grin

“Donald Trump’s ill-informed comments are complete and utter nonsense.

I think he’s betraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit to hold the office of President of the United States.

“I think Donald Trump is clearly out of his mind if he thinks that’s a sensible way to proceed, to ban people going to the United States in that way, or to any country.

“I would invite him to come and see the whole of London and take him round the city
but I don’t want to expose Londoners to the risk to any unnecessary risk of meeting Donald Trump.”

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/06/2019 20:53

The Brexit Party leader has said he did not declare the £450,000 sum to the assembly because at the time, he was about to leave politics and had been seeking a new life in the US.

Surely it doesn't matter if you're about to leave? If you haven't left then you are still bound by the rules. And as recent history shows us - he didn't leave politics and has returned to the EU, so his intentions to go to the U.S matter even less.

please tell me this committee has the power to fine him into the poor house and suspend some MEP privileges. I'd want then to have the power to boot him out - but they probably don't as that would involve a by election in the south east and be a total arse ache for the rest of Europe.

Speaking of which - what do they do if an MEP dies in office?

ContinuityError · 04/06/2019 20:56

I am more concerned that John McDonnell was filmed only 6 years ago saying, "I am a Marxist."

Ooh, is John McDonell in the running to be the new unelected Tory PM?

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2019 20:57

If a Westminster MP didn't declare 450k because they were planning to leave politics .....

I don't think that excuse would work !

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2019 20:58

Boris Johnson on Brexit - 2013:

“If we left the EU… we would have to recognise that most of our problems are not caused by ‘Bwussels’, Grin

but by chronic British short-termism, inadequate management, sloth, low skills, a culture of easy gratification and underinvestment in both human and physical capital and infrastructure…

Why are we still, person for person, so much less productive than the Germans?

That is now a question more than a century old, and the answer is nothing to do with the EU.”

Clavinova · 04/06/2019 21:13

Ooh, is John McDonnell in the running to be the new unelected Tory PM?

No, but middle earning families will be poorer under a Labour government/John McDonnell Chancellor - than even the worst forecast for Brexit.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 04/06/2019 21:15

Somebody been reading the Torygraph?

Clavinova · 04/06/2019 21:23

A politIcian who conspires to beat up a journalist

The recording has been edited so much we don't know what else he said - and he wasn't a politician 30 years ago.

ContinuityError · 04/06/2019 21:32

No, but middle earning families will be poorer under a Labour government/John McDonnell Chancellor - than even the worst forecast for Brexit.

And the electorate could choose to vote for that or not if there was a GE.

Nobody has asked me who I would like to be Tory PM until 2022 Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2019 21:32

Do we want as PM someone who conspired to beat up a journalist ?
That's not a minor thing;

it would have been a violent criminal offence if it hadn't fizzled out
If Boris had been brought up on a council estate instead of at Eton, he would have learned how little ordinary people have to do, to be guilty of conspiracy

The voters can decide if they want McDonnell, Corbyn, Marxism ....

A year or so of No Deal Brexit produces probably the only circumstances under which voters would choose Marxism.

That's why Corbyn is so keen on Brexit

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2019 21:34

Has any respected economist forecast an 8% drop in GDP if Corbyn gets in ?

How can he be worse than losing all our trade deals ?

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2019 21:36

If there is a GE soon after No Deal, as predicted,
then many in the soft left and centre would hold their noses and vote Corbyn,
to stop the catastrophic US FTA

borntobequiet · 04/06/2019 21:39

The recording tells us that Johnson is an unscrupulous thug. And little he has done since belies that.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2019 21:40

BREAKING
Iain Duncan Smith and Owen Paterson met US President Donald Trump for an half an hour meeting
over a cup of tea this afternoon.

They discussed Brexit and everything from "trade to Nato".

No UK official was present or has a record of the meeting.

ERG sources say the pair were representing the ERG
< the ERG really are like an independent party >

Are we entering a phase now as a country where words which once were really not all that bad (socialist; Marxist) are becoming Very Bad Words? It's s small step before some people in the UK start spitting 'liberal' as if its' a criminal offence.

TheElementsSong · 04/06/2019 21:56

Brave new Brexitannia. Also in this phase, things which once were Very Bad, like conspiring to beat up a journalist, are OK because Reasons.

ContinuityError · 04/06/2019 21:58

I think the Labour : Marxist : Bad message by the CCHQ cheerleaders is currently being drowned out by the Tory : No Deal : Wave Bye Bye to the NHS bullhorn.
