So at least the Trump visit has achieved something this week.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/06/2019 22:13

Some people are already spitting out Liberal as an evil word. People who I thought were friends.

prettybird · 04/06/2019 22:17

If an MEP dies in office (or becomes an MP and has to resign Wink) then the next name on that party's list becomes the sitting MEP.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2019 22:18

I've seen online in the UK, posters copying the US rightwing version "libtard" = liberal + retard Angry

Peregrina · 04/06/2019 22:20

I am pretty sure that under the dHondt system, the next one on the party list would be asked to take the seat - I assume if they were still able to.

For those under the STV system, the next on the list would be the last one to get eliminated when the seats were filled - so if three had been elected, the fourth place would be offered the seat.

prettybird · 04/06/2019 22:36

The Scottish Conservative MEP elected in 2014 resigned to become part of the Government (through a convenient life peerage Hmm) in 2017 and it was the 3rd named on the Conservative list who took his place. Presumably by that time, the 2nd named had found something else to do Wink

lonelyplanetmum · 04/06/2019 22:36

I hadn't twigged this before...

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/06/2019 22:47

Good for the welsh government! It's interesting because Wales did vote leave - the government is going against the will of the people
let's hope they give labour some courage.

Thanks for the info re: dead MEPs pretty

HagridsBigToe · 04/06/2019 23:12

So that's two governments strongly against leave- Scotland and Wales. Scotland and NI citizens also voted to remain. So why is England dragging the rest of the UK out against their will?

jessicawessica · 04/06/2019 23:23

Why is JC acting like a petulant middle aged Wolfie Smith?
Does he not realise that if there is a GE and if Labour win he is going to have to negotiate with DT?
DT won't have any dealings with him after today. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot, Surely it would have made more sense to bite his lip and try for a smooth path for the sake of future Trade deals.

Because England is 10 times the size of Scotland, Wales & NI and that's the definition of UK democracy. The "majority" takes all and fuck the rest of us SadAngry

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2019 23:35

jessica JC should have no more problems with living down past insults than Boris had

  • Boris was far ruder to Trump in 2015

Also, JC's version of Brexit is never going to include a US FTA,
because of the USA demands wrt the NHS, lower food standards and overall prioritisation of US big business interests over UK

dreichuplands · 04/06/2019 23:41

Having had a steady diet of Trump for the last two years I am of the view that he doesn't really care if people are rude to him. He values power and authority not politeness. He places no value in being kind, polite or reasonable. Some of his current best friends in the US, Lindsay Graham for example have been very rude about him in the past.

Lonelycrab · 04/06/2019 23:52

And even if 40 years pass and we are still arguing this,

I think in forty years it’ll be brutally apparent wtf went on, and hopefully we’ll all be a bit wiser. I fear that the nhs and the UK Might not still exist at that point.

Peregrina · 04/06/2019 23:58

But I am almost certainly going to be dead in 40 years time. Small consolation, I know.

Cailleach1 · 05/06/2019 00:19

If Stormont was up and running, the majority of the MLA's would probably be against Brexit, too. DUP do not represent most of the people of NI. Look no further than the recent EU elections.

LonelyTiredandLow · 05/06/2019 07:12

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot, Surely it would have made more sense to bite his lip and try for a smooth path for the sake of future Trade deals.

Something Farage shouting like a child in EP should bear in mind of course, but won't Hmm. Far more damaging stripping out all trade we currently use and need than JC possibly slightly affecting a potential deal that isn't agreed yet.

Songsofexperience · 05/06/2019 07:25

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot, Surely it would have made more sense to bite his lip and try for a smooth path for the sake of future Trade deals.

Agree with your assessment of him, but he should finally come off the fence and go full on remain. There is no hope for our public services to survive any alignment with the US.

lonelyplanetmum · 05/06/2019 07:29

I'm working extra at the moment and am not up to speed with reading the threads.Have we fully analysed who Trump chose to meet at Winfield house:

• Faragit
•Iain Duncan Smith (ERG)
•Owen Paterson (ERG)

Trump refuses to meet the leader of the opposition but he proactively meets these fringe right wingers. I'd forgotten but IDS even founded a right wing think tank.

I know the many criticisms of Corbyn, but he has an official leading national role. Trump won't meet him.

At the end of the day, the ERG is a subversive force within government. The mess we are now in is significantly the result of Cameron's inability to control the ERG.

Analogies would be:

  1. Another leader say Putin, or Viktor Orbán or Erdogan came on an official state visit. Then they refused to meet Corbyn but arranged private non official audiences with fringe groups. OR
  1. Theresa May had visited the US in the past and refused to meet Hilary Clinton or say Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer but agreed to meet someone like I don't know Dana Rohrabacher
Or a Ku Klux Klan leader.

Trump is here on an official visit. Why does Trump feel entitled to pursue his own agenda here? Why is it tolerated that he can build relationships with who he wants here? If other world leaders did this wouldn't it be seen as sinister.? Where is our f.ing sovereignty?

Peregrina · 05/06/2019 07:37

Where is our f.ing sovereignty?

Where are the Leavers' protests about this? This was one of their key demands.

Songsofexperience · 05/06/2019 07:38

Imagine if Macron or Merkel had done that! The Daily Mail would be calling for them to be kicked out of the country, bloody colonizers!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/06/2019 07:59

I meant to add, in the States, even back in the 80s Liberal was a word to insult people and of course it means something different there.

lonelyplanetmum · 05/06/2019 08:00

Imagine if Macron or Merkel had done that!

Yes exactly. As part of the Brexit debates various EU leaders including Varadker have of course met up with lots ok UK politicians.

However imagine Merkel came on an official state visit. Then refused to meet Corbyn- but had a private meeting with Farage or Tommy Robinson. Would that be ok?

Peregrina · 05/06/2019 08:14

Then refused to meet Corbyn- but had a private meeting with Farage or Tommy Robinson. Would that be ok?

With Farage yes, 'Tommy Robinson' perhaps not. The notable absence of our regular Leavers on these threads failing to criticise Trump's behaviour is telling.
