Westministenders: The Only Election That Matters - The Tory One

Fallout from the Euro Elections makes for interesting reading for the leadership hopefuls.

Its not a clear cut as some make out. There is still a case for a deal. The trouble is passing it through parliament. And there is no time to do that. Nor no will.

Any new leader's priority isn't going to be a deal. Its going to be avoiding a General Election. And thats going to be hard.

We are also realistically facing the prospect of another extension which France is likely to block leading to no deal or no deal.

Or a 2nd Referendum.

A 2nd Referendum might be the only way to avoid a General Election. And that will still have no deal on the ballot. Of that you can be sure.

Peter Foster of the Telegraph remarked this morning that in fact the only way to a deal now, might well be via no deal, because of all the routes we have exhausted through incompetence. And that will come at a very high price.

{Redbrex and bluebrex sound too much like cereals.}

Well you certainly have 'unreadyBrex'.

LonelyTiredandLow · 31/05/2019 11:00

I wonder if Alan Sugar is wondering where their due diligence has been a reminder of his stance in 2018

Wondering if it being a company there may be remunerations and what the shareholders have been told is the business plan?

Iambuffy · 31/05/2019 11:01

CBI saying no deal Brexit would be disastrous.

Well...duh.

LonelyTiredandLow · 31/05/2019 11:03

Would love to see their articles of association and how they will declare their Tax Return on the overseas unknown 'donors'.

1tisILeClerc · 31/05/2019 11:04

{The Brexit party just want a 'clean break' (rather than calling it a 'no deal') which implies that we just merrily carry on as usual but without the EU breathing down our neck}

Well they will be in for a shock then. Leaving takes many things away from the UK, it will be an 'extraction' not 'carrying on'.

wheresmymojo · 31/05/2019 11:06

It's gone very quiet on the no deal preparations front hasn't it?

Surely we're edging ever close to no deal (again) and we should be ramping up no deal plans but it's all gone rather quiet?

I'd have (a minute amount) more interest in those politicians/leadership contestants favouring no deal if they had a better plan than 'let's hope the little we managed to get done by March is okay'.

Is the NAO going to do another view of our preparedness?

Basilpots · 31/05/2019 11:09

So how much in taxes will BXP be due to pay.

They seem to have a nice and tidy turnover.

Tax returns could be an interesting read.

IIRC the German (casual) word 'Englander' was a name given to a type of pipe wrench (commonly known as stilson wrench in the UK).
Something I am assuming is a 'universal tool' whereas typically the Germans would produce a spanner of some sort that fits the job accurately.
Probably on the same lines as a 'Manchester screwdriver' being a hammer.

NoWordForFluffy · 31/05/2019 11:12

I don't know if this link will work, but here's the Articles.

DGRossetti · 31/05/2019 11:21

Probably on the same lines as a 'Manchester screwdriver' being a hammer.

But good for those crinkle-cut nails ....

lonelyplanetmum · 31/05/2019 11:33

Has anyone done a recent Yougov survey asking to what extent you see Russia as a military and economic threat? Weird- whose idea was it to ask this now?

Also qs about to what extent you see the US as friendly or hostile to the EU?

BigChocFrenzy · 31/05/2019 11:34

How could a Remain coalition deliver a No Deal choice after a referendum ?

Hand over all Brexit-related matters to the Brexit party / parties prepared to implement it ?

Promise confidence and support if need be on all No Deal measures

If there is a PV, then there must be an agreement to implement the result - make it binding in the PV bill

BigChocFrenzy · 31/05/2019 11:36

Othrwise, if there is a GE before Brexit, then the Remain parties have to stand on a platform of Revoke
No PV, just Revoke

CrunchyCarrot · 31/05/2019 11:37

Well they will be in for a shock then. Leaving takes many things away from the UK, it will be an 'extraction' not 'carrying on'.

Carry on Brexiting - only it's a horror and not a comedy!

It's gone very quiet on the no deal preparations front hasn't it?

It has - are they going to exhume Operation Yellowhammer?

Basilpots · 31/05/2019 11:41

Lonely I’ve just had that one. Think I’ve had that question before.

DGRossetti · 31/05/2019 11:42

How could a Remain coalition deliver a No Deal choice after a referendum ?

That's assuming you can get a majority out of the pieces.

Imagine a parliament where you can't get a Leave majority, and you can't get a Remain majority ? Even if there's still a recognisable "Tory" and/or "Labour" party left ? Is it so impossible ?

lonelyplanetmum · 31/05/2019 11:42

I'm not a twitterer but

#unreadyBrex could catch on.

Interestingly this made me think of the attachment 'unready' to Æthelred II. His name came from the Old English unræd. It means "poorly advised" and his actual first name means "well advised".. so it was a pun.

So unready Brex means... ill advised.

If only there was a candidate for PM called Ethel. The puns would be endless.

Basilpots · 31/05/2019 11:47

It's gone very quiet on the no deal preparations front hasn't it?

DEXU spent £25K on consultants in April according to email from .GOV yesterday so they are doing something.

Basilpots · 31/05/2019 12:01

Ethelred the Unready wasn’t it ?

Think he got a mention in a history lesson yonks ago.

howabout · 31/05/2019 12:01

RedBrex BlueBrex had me thinking Lego - shows where my head is. Grin

I completely agree with Bigchoc on the lack of logic of a Remain Parliament running a PV. That is why I think it is almost certain it will be a Brexit Tory PM swiftly followed by a GE with a single issue Leave by 31 October Manifesto.

Loving the screwdriver banter - very neatly illustrates the pitfalls of being fluent in a language. Scots are notorious for using exactly the same phrase to mean 2 entirely opposite things and a multitude of variants in between. Funny thing is you would think that would mean you would need context or facial expression to discern the difference but you don't. All the #permissionfromSajid participants are having absolutely no problems communicating effectively but if Le Monde or The Daily Mail start following along ....

"Come bye come bye ..... o fer fucks sake Sajid will you give my sheepdog permission to come bye ..."

howabout · 31/05/2019 12:04

Don't launch #unreadyBrex cos you'll only embolden #readyforRaab who, according to some approving quarters, has definitely had his Weetabix

OK if 'Convoy' wasn't good enough, how about this:

Celebrating the places you will need your new blue passport to get to, once you have got in line.

lonelyplanetmum · 31/05/2019 12:19

Lonely I’ve just had that one. Think I’ve had that question before.

I can't remember that question before, but I missed some surveys. Seriously in peacetime is it normal for governments to be sending out surveys to find out to what extent Russia is seen by the people as an economic or military threat?

It just seems surreally weird!

What is the motive behind such a survey? Are we about to do a Russian trade deal? Sell them arms?!

It's so weird. If The Kremlin were consultative would they send out a Krem.gov survey asking their citizens to what extent the U.K. is seen as an economic or military threat?
