Westministenders: The Only Election That Matters - The Tory One

Fallout from the Euro Elections makes for interesting reading for the leadership hopefuls.

Its not a clear cut as some make out. There is still a case for a deal. The trouble is passing it through parliament. And there is no time to do that. Nor no will.

Any new leader's priority isn't going to be a deal. Its going to be avoiding a General Election. And thats going to be hard.

We are also realistically facing the prospect of another extension which France is likely to block leading to no deal or no deal.

Or a 2nd Referendum.

A 2nd Referendum might be the only way to avoid a General Election. And that will still have no deal on the ballot. Of that you can be sure.

Peter Foster of the Telegraph remarked this morning that in fact the only way to a deal now, might well be via no deal, because of all the routes we have exhausted through incompetence. And that will come at a very high price.

misti if they’re moaning they must be ok.

borntobequiet · 30/05/2019 20:51

What’s 202 plus 119...aha...

Basilpots · 30/05/2019 20:57

So in light of that poll and Israel going back to the polls because a coalition can’t be agreed.

What an earth would we do in that situation can’t see Lib Dem’s working with Labour with Corbyn at the helm they got there fingers burnt last time.

1tisILeClerc · 30/05/2019 21:00

Talking about Macron to my business friends gets a pretty non committal reply, 'OK' is about as good as it gets but they are more interested in other aspects such as the environment.

woman19 · 30/05/2019 21:06

Interesting poll there. I'm sure NS and the new Lib Dem leader will give a considered response to a coalition with some one like Starmer at the helm.

EU voters disenfranchised are being counted. Estimates of 1.6million or 77%. Angry

Council figures: Just 23% of EU citizens managed to register before election

Basilpots · 30/05/2019 21:08

Tis think any of our lot would take ok as a ringing endorsement atm.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2019 21:22

Up to now we've occasionally considered a hung Parliament with 2 parties coming to some sort of agreement

  • it would be tricky under ordinary circumstances, but horrendous with Brexit

Now we have to seriously consider what would happen if it takes 3 parties .....
Makes my head 🤯

We are doomed, doomed I tell thee ....
Don't call a GE ffs !

woman19 · 30/05/2019 21:24

We are doomed, doomed I tell thee ....
Turquoise have put on 10% in Westminster polling in a week.
Ah well......

DGRossetti · 30/05/2019 21:26

Up to now we've occasionally considered a hung Parliament with 2 parties coming to some sort of agreement

It would probably kill Brexit dead.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2019 21:27

I've been hoping the current hung Pariament with the disgraceful DUP arrangement is a one-off,
but accepting it probably isn't

I've been mostly concerned about a Tory-Brex arrangement
Who can imagine a Grand Coaition Lib-Lab-Con, like the Germans have had before - we're not that logical and we expect winner takes all

TemporaryPermanent · 30/05/2019 21:31

General election will most likely result in a Tory/Brexit coalition that will do no deal, or at the very minimum will pass something called the Hastily Repolished Turd Act, though I think now the WA is so necrotic it would have to be wearing Max Factor to get through.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2019 21:32

DG I expect that a hung Parliament that is far short of any majority would kill the UK

...... but the Brexiters will still expect the corpse to demand the EU give us cake

DGRossetti · 30/05/2019 21:33

I've been hoping the current hung Pariament with the disgraceful DUP arrangement is a one-off, but accepting it probably isn't

I think 2015 will look to be an anomaly in 50 years time. It's hung parliaments all the way from hereonin. The nature of society is changing, and politicians - well those in power - are behind the curve. After all, choice is the mantra of the market. Choice and freedom to choose.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2019 21:34

Maybe change a few dates in the WA and rename it

Tried & trusted Uk strategy, e.g. WIndscale / Sellfield

prettybird · 30/05/2019 21:44

We've talked about May being a Zombie PM and how difficult it is to kill a Zombie. Never actually thought we'd be considering a Zombie Parliament Shock

The madness is going to go on for years Sad

Argentina here we come Hmm

and that's me trying to be positive: I could have said Venezuala Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2019 21:50

"Hastily Repolished Turd Act" Grin

1tisILeClerc · 30/05/2019 21:56

The GJ referred to their protests as 'Acte s' and got to about 20 or so (I stopped counting).
How many more times will the EU have to say 'sign this' to the UK?

I am not saying many of the cabinet are dense, but it isn't sinking in very fast.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2019 21:58

Oh dear, Peter Shilton used to be my favourite footballer (I have a soft spot for goalies)
I see he dropped the ball and is now a Faragist

If he is typical, then the "real" Brexiters regard even Gove as a Remainer now
Who can satisfy that odd, very odd indeed, 35% or so, except the Flying Faragist himself

Peter Shilton@PeterShilton

Gove is said to support Leave but because he was still backing May’s rubbish deal when she resigned that makes him a Remainer in my eyes 👀^ @brexitpartyuk^

Basilpots · 30/05/2019 22:10

Oh God it’s going to be Raab he’s the hardest isn’t he ?

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2019 22:20

Raab's the dimmest (since DD is not a candidate)

His fans in the Torygraph are trying to make out he's the hard man, the tough negotiator that terrifies Barnier.

In rl, Barnier reported in the fly-on-the-wall documentary how Raab made a very tough statement,
after which Barnier said that would mean No Deal
.... and sweaty Raab totally caved in Grin

Barnier may be terrified at the prospect of negotiating with someone who doesn't know where his country's food comes from .... poor bugger wants to retire before he's 100

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2019 22:25

The Brexit Party MEP who worked for Cambridge Analytica ... to appear on QT

Any Questions ?

Steve Peers**@StevePeers retweeted Tom Scott #FBPEE@TomScott*

Before joining the #Brexitt^ Party, Alexandra Phillips worked for Cambridge Analytica - a company that boasted of the dirty tricks it used to subvert democracies around the world.
You're really spoiling us now #bbcqtt^,

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 30/05/2019 22:26

@brexit.part.yuk

Sorry.

Have coat.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2019 22:27

Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

Cabinet is cancelled next Tuesday

The combination of Donald Trump being in town and the Tory leadership contest has pretty much killed off any pretense that Govt can function as usual...

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2019 23:33

Fiachra Ó Cionnaith@Ocionnaith (Irish Examiner)

On #Brexit and meeting Jeremy Corbyn, the Taoiseach says:^^

"There is a hardening view across EU we cannot continue to have a rolling extension of deadlines.

I don't think it's viable to have unanimous support across the EU Council while the UK continues to figure it out..."

Taoiseach (continues)...

"The chances of a further extension are pretty slim and the Irish protocol or backstop is closed."

woodpigeons · 30/05/2019 23:36

Don’t mention Venezuela Pretty. My son’s wife is from there. Nice alternative if they want to leave after Brexit. Not.
