Westminstenders: Has Boris been outmanoeuvred? Reprise

RedToothBrush · 17/05/2019 22:31

In the beginning there was this thread:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eu_referendum_2016_/2670552-Has-Boris-been-outmanoeuvred?pg=1

And it said:
If Boris Johnson looked downbeat yesterday, that is because he realises that he has lost.

Perhaps many Brexiters do not realise it yet, but they have actually lost, and it is all down to one man: David Cameron.

With one fell swoop yesterday at 9:15 am, Cameron effectively annulled the referendum result, and simultaneously destroyed the political careers of Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and leading Brexiters who cost him so much anguish, not to mention his premiership.

And

If he runs for leadership of the party, and then fails to follow through on triggering Article 50, then he is finished. If he does not run and effectively abandons the field, then he is finished. If he runs, wins and pulls the UK out of the EU, then it will all be over - Scotland will break away, there will be upheaval in Ireland, a recession ... broken trade agreements. Then he is also finished. Boris Johnson knows all of this. When he acts like the dumb blond it is just that: an act.

The Brexit leaders now have a result that they cannot use. For them, leadership of the Tory party has become a poison chalice.

So what of where we stand and the poison chalice of the Tory Leadership and a deal.

According to a poll of Tory Members, Johnson is by far their runaway favourite to become next leader. And he's given a 61% competence score - higher than any other candidate.

With Raab as their second favourite.

May has successfully managed to make such a mess of how she handled the 2016 Tory Party Conference and everything that subsequently stemmed from that, that the poison chalice of leadership will be passed and sooner than many would have wanted.

However blame for what follows can be laid at her feet. At the Labour Party’s feet for ending talks that were never going anyway. At the EU. And No Deal has been detoxified by May's handling amongst many supporters of Brexit. Johnson and Raab will therefore have no interest in striking a deal with the EU and instead set sail for exit on 31st Oct and will brazen it out.

What is scary is that waiting in the wings is Farage, who without winning a single seat in the HoC has more power than any MP. They are all so afraid of him. Thus we face a very hard push to the right, with the left and centre in disarray and disorganisation.

The Human Rights Act and Devolution settlements will be top of the list to go.

And we will face draconian ways to control the population as the lazy fools will want no accountability to the press or the courts.

How long before appointed or elected judges?

Was Boris outmanoeuvred?

By the look of it, absolutely not. He just had to wait a few years. But his path and power will not be lead by him... But by those who pull his strings.

It looks bleak. Very bleak.

Many may rue the day they didn't vote for May's deal yet...

... And fear of this nightmare vision of the future is the only card May has left in her hand to play. Will anyone realise this?

Probably not, because they will all still think Johnson's leadership bid will be blocked by moderates. The trouble is he's polling well and the cowards are too busy looking over their shoulders at the turquoise arrows.

Pray for a shock result next week which brings fewer Brexit Party seats than are anticipated. The trouble is they have the momentum right now and Remainers don't know their arses from their elbows much less be passion and inspiring to the young and to women.

We are fucked.

Have now received the full set of election communications for the Eastern Region (except one for an independent) All addressed to the Master of the house - none for the Lady despite her being registered with her own (different) surname. Is there some perception that only men are floating voters?

AutumnCrow · 21/05/2019 13:38

Good point about the homegrown food being ready by then.

My garden is a mini allotment and I already have herbs, lettuce and asparagus ready. By Sept / October we will have had, or have, spuds, apples, tomatoes, courgettes, and more herbs. We normally grow chillies but we still have a previous glut of frozen and pickled ones to get through.

This year's "something a bit different" is pak choi.

TokyoSushi · 21/05/2019 13:40

Just had a good old search on Twitter, so May's speech will be at 4pm to present the 'new deal.'

Same as the old deal with a bit of glitter on?

Iambuffy · 21/05/2019 13:40

It's not too bad steamed lightly fluffy

tobee · 21/05/2019 13:42

Bated breath here, Tokyo

TokyoSushi · 21/05/2019 13:43

I wonder if it will be something that 'delivers on the will of the people and takes back control of our borders, our money and our laws'

Probably just changing the colour of the lipstick on the pig!

NoWordForFluffy · 21/05/2019 13:46

We've not cracked the timing yet, buffy. I say 'we', but DH cooks in the main as he's the SAHP.

@AutumnCrow, I did pak choi last year as my allotment was new and I needed something in the ground. It grew really well.

My new things are squashes (if they ever germinate!) and courgettes (ditto). I'm doing loads more tomatoes this year which we'll toast with herbs from the garden and freeze.

I've got so many pepper and chilli plants on the go too. We're going for broke!

LonelyTiredandLow · 21/05/2019 13:48

Frozen broccoli is better oven baked IMO as it seems to be pre-cooked Hmm or if you need added water in a slow cooker soup (unlikely).

Had Green Party leaflet today (which I thought I had a week ago already!), UKIP and a random surprise of The Socialist Party which seems to think slamming both remain and leave is a way to win friends and influence people. Seems to err on the side of euroscepticism.

dreichuplands · 21/05/2019 13:53

We had one courgette plant last year it produced so much that the dc went on courgette strike and have begged me not to plant any this year.

tobee · 21/05/2019 13:54

Still be trundling out "smooth and orderly Brexit", Tokyo. I expect even the cameramen will be heard guffawing

tobee · 21/05/2019 13:56

This was still the best laugh recently. The slogan is fantastic:-

Don't know if anyone's already posted this, but apparently Channel 4 has been banned from Farage party events, presumably because of their attempts to investigate the funding issue. I don't suppose they're missing much but quite a disturbing precedent.

Brexit Pie reminds me of Woolton Pie
www.recipespastandpresent.org.uk/wartime/tag/woolton-pie/

I usually have a few days in warmer climes in November and booked flights to Portugal on November 4th as the price had dropped, oh dear.

Whisky2014 · 21/05/2019 14:31

So pm speech at 4pm offering a longer customs union extension, some thing about workers rights and a few other things. Well, I thought these things couldn't be changed?!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/05/2019 14:34

Isn't she only offering a customs union til the next election? Quite frankly that could be any time.

AutumnCrow · 21/05/2019 14:39

It's hardly a 'bold' offer. It's crap, unworkable, and short-termist.

dreichuplands · 21/05/2019 14:41

Dropping C4 is straight from Trump's playbook.

Whisky2014 · 21/05/2019 14:44

But why, if she could have made changes before, is she only offering it now? :s

1tisILeClerc · 21/05/2019 14:56

It won't be the WA that is changed, but the PD. Maybe she will 'guarantee' some aspects of the PD, which is open to EU negotiation.

tobee · 21/05/2019 15:01

Just seen the weather forecast for UK Thursday. Looks reasonable ☀️ 🌤☁️

NoWordForFluffy · 21/05/2019 15:03

Surely the bits that are in our control (like the workers' rights we retain) can be included within our legislation, i.e. the WAB / WAIB? Is this what she intends to do so her successor can't change it? Or will there be further legislation to do this?

Peregrina · 21/05/2019 15:21

One Parliament can't bind the next. Back in the 1950s the incoming Conservative Admininstration didn't undo the welfare state provisions that Attlee's Government had put in, but I would hardly promise that this would apply now. If Boris Johnson got in, well, I don't know what he would do. If Corbyn got in? Maybe he would stick with what May put.

No good - we want heavy rain to keep the Brexiters at home.

DGRossetti · 21/05/2019 15:32

Going back, wasn't bad weather supposed to be socialist kryptonite ?

tobee · 21/05/2019 15:37

Peregrina I'll have to get my wellies and umbrella out and say "Tut! Tut! It looks like rain!" ☔️ a la Christopher Robin then. Grin
