Westminstenders: Has Boris been outmanoeuvred? Reprise

RedToothBrush · 17/05/2019 22:31

In the beginning there was this thread:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eu_referendum_2016_/2670552-Has-Boris-been-outmanoeuvred?pg=1

And it said:
If Boris Johnson looked downbeat yesterday, that is because he realises that he has lost.

Perhaps many Brexiters do not realise it yet, but they have actually lost, and it is all down to one man: David Cameron.

With one fell swoop yesterday at 9:15 am, Cameron effectively annulled the referendum result, and simultaneously destroyed the political careers of Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and leading Brexiters who cost him so much anguish, not to mention his premiership.

And

If he runs for leadership of the party, and then fails to follow through on triggering Article 50, then he is finished. If he does not run and effectively abandons the field, then he is finished. If he runs, wins and pulls the UK out of the EU, then it will all be over - Scotland will break away, there will be upheaval in Ireland, a recession ... broken trade agreements. Then he is also finished. Boris Johnson knows all of this. When he acts like the dumb blond it is just that: an act.

The Brexit leaders now have a result that they cannot use. For them, leadership of the Tory party has become a poison chalice.

So what of where we stand and the poison chalice of the Tory Leadership and a deal.

According to a poll of Tory Members, Johnson is by far their runaway favourite to become next leader. And he's given a 61% competence score - higher than any other candidate.

With Raab as their second favourite.

May has successfully managed to make such a mess of how she handled the 2016 Tory Party Conference and everything that subsequently stemmed from that, that the poison chalice of leadership will be passed and sooner than many would have wanted.

However blame for what follows can be laid at her feet. At the Labour Party’s feet for ending talks that were never going anyway. At the EU. And No Deal has been detoxified by May's handling amongst many supporters of Brexit. Johnson and Raab will therefore have no interest in striking a deal with the EU and instead set sail for exit on 31st Oct and will brazen it out.

What is scary is that waiting in the wings is Farage, who without winning a single seat in the HoC has more power than any MP. They are all so afraid of him. Thus we face a very hard push to the right, with the left and centre in disarray and disorganisation.

The Human Rights Act and Devolution settlements will be top of the list to go.

And we will face draconian ways to control the population as the lazy fools will want no accountability to the press or the courts.

How long before appointed or elected judges?

Was Boris outmanoeuvred?

By the look of it, absolutely not. He just had to wait a few years. But his path and power will not be lead by him... But by those who pull his strings.

It looks bleak. Very bleak.

Many may rue the day they didn't vote for May's deal yet...

... And fear of this nightmare vision of the future is the only card May has left in her hand to play. Will anyone realise this?

Probably not, because they will all still think Johnson's leadership bid will be blocked by moderates. The trouble is he's polling well and the cowards are too busy looking over their shoulders at the turquoise arrows.

Pray for a shock result next week which brings fewer Brexit Party seats than are anticipated. The trouble is they have the momentum right now and Remainers don't know their arses from their elbows much less be passion and inspiring to the young and to women.

We are fucked.

Adult children travelling back from all over to vote. Postal votes arranged. Proxy votes arranged. Whole of ds's sixth form year 13 comp registered to vote. 90% plus Remain.

What are you counting as a Remain vote?

Littlespaces · 20/05/2019 14:32

Green and Lib Dem.

TheMShip · 20/05/2019 14:36

My kids are only little. Thank you to everyone whose kids and grandkids are old enough to vote, you're trying to secure the future for those who can't.

"He won't be remembered as a man of the people, he'll be remembered as a man of the PayPal."

where were these witty zingers in 2010, Gordon? A few more of those and you could have had that election ... or at least been the better option for Nick Clegg to choose.

I just got misty eyed over the 'visit portugal' ad in the sidebar. (for those who haven't had it it says 'brelcome - Portugal will never leave you') I fucking hate brexit. I do remember Lisbon was very nice, when I went there 20 years ago, though ... maybe I should go back.

Just had a 4 propeller heavy bomber fly over very low, obviously practicing for 6 June commemorations. Hoping to see the parachute drop on the day.

dreichuplands · 20/05/2019 15:02

Farage talking about loser consent is interesting. It doesn't exist because it hasn't been sought. It's a major issue that no senior politician has engaged with.
MIL has agreed to vote Lib Dem, really shocked. DH is delighted.

Electoral Commission to visit Brexit party offices over funding concerns

Body makes announcement after Gordon Brown highlighted issues over PayPal payment

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/may/20/electoral-commission-visit-brexit-party-offices-funding-gordon-brown-paypal

I wonder if the EUP have had a word?

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/05/2019 15:12

Why on earth does it take Gordon Brown to make the electoral commission do its job? They should have done this weeks ago! I assume Gordon Brown doesn't know anymore about the funding than any of the rest of us, so its hardly like he just came up with evidence they needed. Going in tomorrow is leaving it a bit late - and gives them about 15 hours to tidy up their accounts.

Is it just me or is anyone else uncomfortable with the milkshake incident involving Farage ? As much as I despise him I think Remainers should be better than this. He has now got maximum publicity to spout his nonsense and I am concerned about retaliation attacks on Remain politicians which could involve something much more harmful than milkshake.

borntobequiet · 20/05/2019 16:23

Nick Robinson was giving the Brexit Party spokesperson a generally hard time on Today prog this morning, finished off on the finances and just got bluster.

dreichuplands · 20/05/2019 16:27

Tempted though I am to chuck milkshakes over Farage violet I don't think that people promoting legal views as part of a political discourse should have this happen to them.
It normalizes aggression in politics.
So tempting but wrong.

LoonvanBoon · 20/05/2019 16:44

Don't agree with milkshake chucking either, but I certainly don't feel sorry for Farage. He's been winding up his fans at rallies over the past few weeks to refer to MPs as traitors, & his behaviour in Yorkshire was particularly disgusting - joking he'd parked his tanks on Yvette Cooper's lawn, saying she'd done more to block brexit than anyone else while his audience booed & shouted 'lock her up'.

Yvette Cooper gets an appalling amount of abuse & people are not just threatening her with dairy products. Yet Farage said all this while in a neighbouring constituency & not v far from where Jo Cox was murdered, clearly not giving a shit if he was increasing the likelihood of an MP being harmed. I struggle to see his being milkshaked (milkshaken??) as unprovoked, even though I know it's better to rise above his level.

woodpigeons · 20/05/2019 16:47

Is what Farage is doing and saying actually legal though ?

1tisILeClerc · 20/05/2019 16:52

Is lying almost every time you open your mouth illegal?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 20/05/2019 16:54

Thanks Red and hello to everyone. Haven’t been able to keep up with the threads lately.

This is upsetting but sadly I don’t think it comes as a huge surprise.

www.theguardian.com/world/2019/may/20/racism-on-the-rise-since-brexit-vote-nationwide-study-reveals?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Seven in 10 ethnic minority people now report having faced racial discrimination, compared to 58% before the EU vote in January 2016, according to polling data seen by the Guardian.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 20/05/2019 16:59

Is lying almost every time you open your mouth illegal

Unfortunately no

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 20/05/2019 16:59

Damn shame though

tobee · 20/05/2019 17:37

Yes, I do agree with dreich about the incident. As I said in my pp, It was amusing seeing the Farage milkshake incident for a nanosecond. It isn't good to go down to that level. But it's a visceral reaction that needs to be tempered by rational thought.

tobee · 20/05/2019 17:41

That's appalling to see Singing. But not something many on here would be surprised by.

Since the rise of Farage and the referendum result and Trump's election success, that word "emboldened" has come up a lot. People with nasty thoughts being encouraged to act.

RedToothBrush · 20/05/2019 17:44

I believe the milkshake tally is now at

Tommy Robinson x 2
Carl Benjamin (UKIP) x 4
Farage x 1

It was funny the first time.

But now it's become about a deliberate confrontation and it is technically assault I believe. Which helps no one. And it's about people seeking some kind of status for doing it. No you are a copy catting jerk.

All these incidents are making the atmosphere and tension build up and yes that concerning. Especially considering what could be yet to come.

OP posts:
tobee · 20/05/2019 17:51

Call me a cynic, but thinking about it I wouldn't put it past Farage to have set it up for the publicity.

BestIsWest · 20/05/2019 17:54

I will never persuade my Dad to vote other than Labour even though he is a staunch Remainer.
