Westminstenders: Local Elections Madness

This week has gone from banging your head against the wall to wanting to bang your head through it.

Labour have voted to support a 2nd ref as their EU election campaign strategy. Only for Corbyn to ignore it. And a row has broken out.

Change UK seem well on track to make everyone else look professional and to look as 'liberal elite' as humanly possible in a real life reverse paraody of themselves.

The Brexit Party is going from strength to strength with the most wtf candidates imaginable and Farage is happy cos his mate is coming to tea with the Queen.

The Liberal Democrats have decided that anti semitism is OK in an effort to keep Labour seats.

And the Conservatives. Where to start? Probably with the Tory Leadership Election infighting which looks suspiciously as if its now breached national security.

As for Brexit. No one really wants to talk about it. Local elections are next week. May is now apparently supporting the Malthouse Compromise. Be warned, it is difficult to see it as anything but a Trojan Horse for No Deal. Not that everyone has worked this out yet. But until we have the blood bath of the local elections over and done with on Thursday, don't expect much to happen.

Then expect the Tories to lose their minds...

England ==> WIll of the People
Scotland ==> Remain Traitors

From the frantic announcements of 'stuff' happening a month or so ago it has gone very quiet. I suppose everyone is waiting for the UK gov to make it's mind up.

prettybird · 29/04/2019 17:21

Dh tells me that there was a Panelbase one yetyerday which had support over 50% - rising progressively higher if Brexit happens and even higher if there is a No Deal. That's partly why ds won't support Revoke.

There was also apparently a poll last week which was reported in some media as a Shock story that only 20% of Scots wanted a referendum in 2 years time Hmm. What it omitted to say was that 16% wanted it now and that 20% wanted it within a year HmmConfused (can't remember the exact percentages, but they added up to well over 50%).

The poll that said that 49% wanted independence (and that's without an active campaign yet Wink) also didn't include the 16 and 17 year olds who are able to vote in Scotland (not sure if it included the EU nationals).

Found this article. www.scotsman.com/news/politics/poll-only-1-in-5-scots-want-indyref2-vote-within-two-years-1-4915434

Went to the source www.survation.com/archive/2019-2/: which illustrates lies, damned lies and interpretation statistics.

My figures in my earlier post were wrong (that had been a click-bait poll on the Scotsman) - but what is interesting looking to the source is that of the 1012, 34% thought that there should never be another Scottish independence referendum, but that a total of 57% did want another referendum at some point, (21% within 2 years). But what was also interesting was the age profile: 50% of the 65+ year olds didn't want another referendum ever , whereas 50% of the 16-24 year olds wanted one either within 2 years (30%) or 2-5 years (20%).

prettybird · 29/04/2019 17:50

www.scotsman.com/news/politics/majority-of-scots-back-independence-in-event-of-no-deal-brexit-poll-1-4916452

However, backing for Scottish independence appears to grow in the event of the UK leaving the EU without a deal.

In that scenario, support for independence rises to 52% and opposition falls to 48%, the poll found.

That's The Scotsman - which hates the idea of independence - reporting on the Sunday Times Scotland poll.

Can't find the raw data though.

1tisILeClerc · 29/04/2019 18:30

Good to see the UK government being masterful and making a strong statement with it's new found independence and taking back control as it is told by the Chinese to buy their 5G gear while the USA proposes to withhold security data. All these easy deals eh!

havingtochangeusernameagain · 29/04/2019 18:51

As far as the trans agenda is concerned, it's not relevant for me in either the local or EU elections.

In the EU elections I will vote for the party I think most likely to win on a remain ticket in my area (planning to vote for Catherine Bearder of the Libdems as she is first on their list and an existing MEP).

For the local elections we have a community/independent choice. I am not keen on them because they want a "new town" on a local green field site to stop development in the town. However, the Tory candidate for my ward (who may be against it) is a no deal Brexiteer. I really don't want to vote for him. If the new town happens it won't be for a decade or more, so I may well vote for the community group at this stage.

When it comes to a GE it becomes more nuanced but then you also have FPTP so tactical voting plays its part. I live in a very safe Tory seat (though the community group does well at local level) so my vote is wasted anyway.

jasjas1973 · 29/04/2019 19:20

1tisILeClerc absolutely, the way the UK is risking national security and its relationship with its closest and most powerful ally is frankly shocking.
China will only do what is good for China and Huawei is an arm of the Chinese state, that May (apparently) thinks its acceptable to involve the Chinese in 5G and Cameron before her with Nuclear power, shows how unfit for Govt the Tories currently are....and thats before we get onto Brexit!!!

What on earth have leavers voted for?

bellinisurge · 29/04/2019 19:27

Just found out there's a UKIP candidate in my ward but not the neighbouring one which I would have thought was even more UKIP-y than where I live. It's been Labour forever but , as Labour are in the wrong side of a local issue, I think it's ripe for unseating. I'll have to think tactically. The last thing I want is a fecking UKIP councillor.

RedToothBrush · 29/04/2019 19:44

Re trans issue. I'm afraid I can say that I only have my hair on fire. Too close to home and has a huge impact on my family already. I don't have the luxury of time some of you seem to think there is. When your family is sucked into it, you have a different perspective. I don't take my rights for granted, underestimate how coercive the ideology is nor view the future particularly brightly. Once policies are in place they are substantially harder to reverse without a scandal. And that means harm having had been done to trigger that.

I've been lurking, too busy to post.
I don't think anyone has linked to it, so here is Pascal Lamy, the former WTO Director-General, reacting quite Frenchly to IDS spouting inane bollocks about the Irish border.

Shadycorner · 29/04/2019 21:36
