Westminstenders: 1001 Ways to wait for EUCO - Sprouts, Nits and Brexit

Not much more to say other than, all we can do is wait to hear our fate.

Which seems to lie in the hands of Macron.

I think these tweet sums a lot of it up from a couple of jaded soft leavers

Iain Martin @ iainmartin1
This terrible farce in Brussels tonight is like being British during the eurovision song contest. British entrant awaits fate, watching humiliating results come in, trying to smile for the audience back home.

George Trefgarne @georgetrefgarne
To be honest I think Buck’s Fizz and Cheryl thingummy would have made a better job of it

My advice: Don't wait up!

Pippa Crerar @pippacrerar
EU source on Macron: "He is in a bit of a schizophrenic situation - (his) domestic audience demands that he is tough on Britain for historic reasons. On the other hand, France is among the most-hit in any no-deal Brexit. It will take hours before we pull him down from his tree."

So Macron may end up being the one who gets the UK what it wants but is doing it to be tough on us. I'm not sure I understand EU politics.

It's crazy we teach religion and not even basic politics.

Unfortunately I think spin along the lines of the only way to keep our sovereignty is to stay in the EU and they want us to go so let's stick it to them and stay may have merit with some.

Jux · 12/04/2019 14:18

I am so proud! My dd has just pointed out that Farage looks almost exactly like a tortoise on today's lunchtime news. How I long for Spitting Image!

woodpigeons · 12/04/2019 14:18

sos dd went to Lucy Cavendish with a child in tow. It’s a small, very diverse college.

DGRossetti · 12/04/2019 14:22

I'm willing to guess that some die-hard Brexiteers were probably so incensed by the idea that France might veto what the PM was asking for, they'd have voted remain just to "show the French" ...

Sadly Macron has us nailed Sad ...

Vive la difference !

I wonder if the different attitude in Scotland is because Modern Studies is a core part of the curriculum, encouraging "learners' knowledge and understanding of contemporary political and social issues in local, Scottish, United Kingdom and international contexts"

It's part of the core Broad General Education phase, which lasts up to the end of S3 (in theory, in practice often S2), of the Curriculum for Excellence and is incorporated within the Social Studies "thread" of the curriculum.

So it's not politics per se but at least it teaches young (Scottish) people the skills to analyse what's happening (along the lines of Red's media studies degree which has given me newfound respect for the value of such degrees Smile)

Ds stopped Modern Studies at the end of S2 (to the intense disappointment of his Modern Studies teacher) and didn't take at part of his Highers diet in S5. He did crash the Higher in S6 and it has stood him in good stead for his degree in Politics and International Studies degree at Aberdeen Uni (and the reference from his school and Modern Studies teacher Wink probably helped him get the Unconditional offer from the Uni Grin

sos, we thought a Halls with food might be a cheaper/better option for dd but she thinks that as long as she knows how to cook a few cheap meals (so veggie obvs) then she'd rather have access to a kitchen. Beans and pulses is the way to go!

missclimpson · 12/04/2019 14:30

Is this the bit where I post the link to the KS 3 and 4 citizenship curriculum again?

Do pay attention at the back!

If you need a laugh, check out this thread

Check out The Brexit Party website. Seriously. http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eureferendumm2016/3557723-Check-out-The-Brexit-Party-website-Seriously

lonelyplanetmum · 12/04/2019 14:52

Missclimpson I had missed that. It sticks in my gullet to say this as I assume it was part of Gove's largely retro changes but it looks quite good?

LouiseCollins28 · 12/04/2019 14:57

Surely we want our media to be challenging everyone don't we, not pushing how bad any deal is, in the hope of "revoke?"

prettybird · 12/04/2019 14:58

Maybe Gove did pick up something good from his Scottish education Wink

Random18 · 12/04/2019 15:02

I think modern studies is useful but I don’t think it really explains why Scotland is different.

It was one of my favourite subjects though Smile

I think Devolution has been good for scotland.

And I think if England had something similar it may have resulted in EU being viewed differently - that doesn’t explain Wales though.

And finally, and I think most importantly, it’s only in the last few years that Scotland has had even just a little bit of say in its own affairs thanks to Devolution.

Really what’s the difference being ruled by Westminster or Brussels.

And if anything the EU keeps the Tories in check. Then unleashed is terrifying to most Scots!!!

DGRossetti · 12/04/2019 15:04

Surely we want our media to be challenging everyone don't we

Well that's never going to happen so

pushing how bad any deal is, in the hope of "revoke?"

is probably a good game plan ....

havingtochangeusernameagain · 12/04/2019 15:04

And if anything the EU keeps the Tories in check. Then unleashed is terrifying to most Scots

and a great many English, despite popular opinion in Scotland. It's your rural affluent people of a certain age who are the core supporters of the Tories. Sadly there are a lot of them.

missclimpson · 12/04/2019 15:04

Yes I think so lonelyplanetmum but no doubt the time will get squeezed. My DGD1 is in KS4 and she seems to have a pretty good grasp, but then we are a political family!

DGRossetti · 12/04/2019 15:08

I think modern studies is useful but I don’t think it really explains why Scotland is different.

At the risk of kicking something off, the main reason Scotland is different is England ....

Quintella · 12/04/2019 15:08

Annunziata Rees-Mogg's voice is so......middle class.

prettybird · 12/04/2019 15:24

I was just musing, given the discussion about lack of politics education Wink

On a more serious note, England - or rather, the Westminster structure - probably is the reason that Scotland has a different attitude. If WM was set up with a proper federal structure (like the EU Wink) where Scotland's voice could be heard through the use of the veto and even QMV (like the EU Wink)(see Ireland Wink) then maybe the Scottish independence movement would never have gained the traction that it now has.

As it is, Scotland gets drowned out in WM - viz the pulling back of devolved powers to WM as part of the Withdrawal Bill without a single Scottish MP being allowed to speak in the very short debate before all the English MPs filed back in to vote it through Angry

So in comparison, the EU looks wonderfully democratic Grin

Random18 · 12/04/2019 15:25

@DGR erm yes!!!!

There were a few other things I was typing but did refrain.

I actually have a slightly different view of some things as I now live in England. And Devolution is a big thing for me.

Living in West Midlands now you do feel so remote from London.
I think there is now a unitary authority? But that is not the whole West Mids.

You see so much about the Northern Powerhouse and it often seems like the Midlands is forgotten about. Although I am sure many other regions feel the same.

horseshit · 12/04/2019 15:25

Surely we want our media to be challenging everyone don't we, not pushing how bad any deal is, in the hope of "revoke?"

No need for the media to challenge everyone, but calling out blatant lies would have been a good start. Pushing how bad the deal is in the hope for revoke would depend on the angle. If it was a comparison between deal, no deal, revoke that fairly outlined the facts and came to the conclusion that revoke would be the best option based on facts not propaganda, then yes, that would be good.
The “they want us to leave etc” tactic is something I think might be effective, not something I endorse.

LouiseCollins28 · 12/04/2019 15:26

OK, am biting Wink
And "England" in your reasoning means what DGR?

LouiseCollins28 · 12/04/2019 15:30

Prettybird. Scotland has more MPs per voter than England, and its own Parliament, how on earth is that being drowned out??

your winks are frequently super goady btw Wink , assume you mean them to be read that way?

DGRossetti · 12/04/2019 15:43

Living in West Midlands now you do feel so remote from London.

I cry at times. Seriously. But ultimately for DW, the quality of life as a wheelchair user is much better than it would be in most of London.

woodpigeons · 12/04/2019 15:48

Sorry sos. Just seen Lucy Cavendish is for age 21 and over. Shame as dd thoroughly enjoyed her time there.

DGRossetti · 12/04/2019 15:49

And "England" in your reasoning means what DGR?

Not really sure how to respond to that ? England is ... well England (David Mitchell voice ..) defined by my dictionary as "a medium sized European country comprising the southern and eastern parts of Great Britain, located off the coast of continental europe and root of the demonymic "English" and associated language, culture and history; noted for it's northern border with Scotland and Western border with Wales .... off you go"
