Westminstenders: 1001 Ways to wait for EUCO - Sprouts, Nits and Brexit

Not much more to say other than, all we can do is wait to hear our fate.

Which seems to lie in the hands of Macron.

I think these tweet sums a lot of it up from a couple of jaded soft leavers

Iain Martin @ iainmartin1
This terrible farce in Brussels tonight is like being British during the eurovision song contest. British entrant awaits fate, watching humiliating results come in, trying to smile for the audience back home.

George Trefgarne @georgetrefgarne
To be honest I think Buck’s Fizz and Cheryl thingummy would have made a better job of it

My advice: Don't wait up!

Pippa Crerar @pippacrerar
EU source on Macron: "He is in a bit of a schizophrenic situation - (his) domestic audience demands that he is tough on Britain for historic reasons. On the other hand, France is among the most-hit in any no-deal Brexit. It will take hours before we pull him down from his tree."

So Macron may end up being the one who gets the UK what it wants but is doing it to be tough on us. I'm not sure I understand EU politics.

Is there a danger of too many pro-remainer candidates fragmenting the vote in the EU elections?

The whole reason for PR is to deliver the best reflection of the electorate ... hence you rank your preferred candidates so that peoples 2nd (and 3rd ?) choices are counted.

The lack of PR is why the LibDem (or UKIP) never get the proportion of seats in Westminster their share of the vote would suggest.

CrunchyCarrot · 11/04/2019 14:29

Apparently Assange didn't look after his cat properly. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen. But I am outraged on behalf of all felines.

Mark Francois (with a straight face) criticising May for sticking to her WA.

"sheer obstinacy is not a virtue"

Cue a wave of laughter throughout the HoC

OP posts:
phpolly · 11/04/2019 14:31

How could he not have looked after his cat? What the hell else did he have to do in there?

RedToothBrush · 11/04/2019 14:32

Pippa Crerar@pippacrerar
Toy soldier Mark Francois lectures the PM: “Perseverance is a virtue, but sheer obstinacy is not”. House collapses in peels of laughter. Not sure that was quite the desired effect...

Just to reiterate

*The UK are NOT definitely taking part in the EU elections!!!
*
This is because we might have already left by then.

Theresa was talking about us leaving on June 1st.

Windowsareforcheaters · 11/04/2019 14:36

DGR the D'Hondt is a party list system.

You vote for a party candidate but the party allocates the seats.

The candidate at the top of the party list gets the seat.

DGRossetti · 11/04/2019 14:39

I did say I'd have to refresh my understanding ... I only just learned the Italian system Grin

DGRossetti · 11/04/2019 14:40

the D'Hondt is a party list system.

Can't we use the Duckworth-Lewis ?

RedToothBrush · 11/04/2019 14:40

Mark Di Stefano @markdistef
We’re underway now, lawyers for US government and CPS, and for Assange.

He confirms his name, date of birth.

Now getting a rundown of the two warrants executed against Assange this morning.

New: The diplomatic note sent to the UK requesting extradition was sent on 22 December 2017 — under the Trump administration.

Breaking: Julian Assange pleads NOT GUILTY to breaching bail conditions (the domestic warrant)

Tonsilss · 11/04/2019 14:43

You only get ONE vote in the European elections. You can't vote for your 2nd and 3rd choices as well.

Unless you're in NI.

Tonsilss · 11/04/2019 14:44

There should only be 1 pro-REVOKE candidate in each seat.

enochroot · 11/04/2019 14:47

I know it's a list system but I'm wondering if say the Greens and Lib Dems hoover up a lot of remainer votes from people disaffected with Labour ( like me) is there a danger of neither of them gaining enough votes to get seats?
I'm used to my vote in general elections not counting because the Tory always wins here but I want my vote in the EU election to really matter.

Windowsareforcheaters · 11/04/2019 14:49

I refreshing as well. I remember it's a list system but I can't remember what the actual ballot sheet looks like.

howabout · 11/04/2019 14:52

enochroot handy guide to European Election Voting System.

www.europarl.europa.eu/unitedkingdom/en/your-meps/european_elections/the_voting_system.html

You vote for Parties, not candidates and each Party has a list of proposed MEPs ranked by its preference. Split voting across lots of different anti-Brexit options would indeed tend to lead to fewer elected candidates. However this could be just as much of a problem for pro-Brexit vote if it splits Con / UKIP / Brexit Party. In fact if CHUK, Greens, LibDem and SDP all run candidates then net result could be vast majority of seats going Lab / Con - or indeed Lab if Cons boycott en masse as currently threatening.

I am voting Jelly Babies and DD1 (very excited to be voting as just turned 18) is opting for Lollipops.

RedToothBrush · 11/04/2019 14:53

When did Farage first appear to officially get caught up in Trump Russia / Assange shit?

www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jan/19/trump-russia-inquiry-is-told-nigel-farage-may-have-given-julian-assange-data
Trump-Russia inquiry is told Nigel Farage may have given Julian Assange data
Private investigator tells House panel Farage gave thumb drive to Assange, who officials view as a conduit for the Russian government

Date of this report?
Friday 19th January 2018.

Just y'know saying. That's quite interesting timing.

As is

President Trump's former Chief Strategist Steve Bannon is questioned at a private sitting of the House Intelligence Committee. He is issued with a subpoena during the meeting upon citing executive privilege to refuse questions about the Trump transition and administration, but maintains his refusal.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/04/2019 14:56

The EUCO statement didn't say no further extensions, but individual E27 leaders have

Even our strongest supporter among them ws discouraging the idea there could be another ....

NL PM Mark Rutte: "I would expect this is the last delay.

"On October 31 the British will either have agreed to a deal, have decided to cancel Brexit or leave without a deal. But then we will have had six more months to prepare for that."

Don't even consider what Macron would say if we ask for another extension ....

GroovieGazelloo · 11/04/2019 14:57

Ooh ! How proud I feel to have participated in the initial stages of MEP candidate training.
( Take time to think it through born Smile. It is a big commitment.)

And how proud I feel to know that some of our collective energy could go towards constructing a better Europe. Grin

Thankyou so much for these threads Red. And thankyou so much too to all you lovely people explaining and re-explaining things in clear, informative and insightful words.

Sending many bisous to all - with or without cats - from a happy
European -UK-Frenchie.

enochroot · 11/04/2019 14:58

I think I'll vote for the Green Party. East Midlands gets 5 and right now we have 1 Labour, 2 UKIP and two Tories, one of which is a brexiteer. I want to do my bit to change that.

GroovieGazelloo · 11/04/2019 15:00

Well, according to my town hall, I definitely am ! Grin

Julian Assange will not give evidence

Julian Assange’s lawyer says that District Judge Emma Arbuthnot who heard this case at previous hearings should have recused herself because of “bias”

District Judge Michael Snow tells the defence it is “unacceptable in front of a packed press gallery to traduce the reputation of the senior District Judge”. He says it is “grossly unfair”

District Judge Michael Snow finds Julian Assange guilty of failing to surrender

He says Julian Assange’s behaviour is “the behaviour of a narcissist who cannot get beyond his own selfish interest”

He sends Julian Assange to the Crown Court for sentencing as the offence was so serious

Julian Assange will next appear on the 2nd of May by video link at this court on the extradition matter. He will next appear on the bail offence at Southwark Crown Court on a date to be announced. Hearing over.

European Parliament Elections #the3millionVote

EU/EEA citizens in the UK can vote at the European Parliament elections in May.

Here, in this thread, we explain what you do need to do NOW to vote in the UK. #ThisTimeImVoting

BigChocFrenzy · 11/04/2019 15:04

There is indeed good reason for the 31 October date:

Juncker retires then and the Commissioners terms of office also ends

No real new EU initiatives are expected until then; it'll be mostly housekeeping, hence not much for the UK to wreck if our govt broke its word

So there will be a new team starting 1 Novermber and that is when new policy iniatives and plans would start

iirc, Tusk would also be retiring, so we will lose our best friend at the EU Sad

TalkinPaece · 11/04/2019 15:06

So, Brexit is now at the start of the next Brussels Sprout season
excellent

I shall book my Easter holiday.
