Westminstenders: For Whom the Bell Tolls

Although another round of Indicative Votes is scheduled, arguably the chance for a soft Brexit has gone for two reasons.

Parliament was unable to show a majority because those on the opposition benches were too busy saying 'I want this but only on these terms' or still being too unwilling to compromise. Thus the opportunity and point for a third round starts to look weak.

The second is that Tory MPs were resolute in an opposition to a soft Brexit.

Unless May decides to be the next Robert Peel and go for a soft Brexit on the back of opposition vote its not going to happen.

This leaves May's deal as it stands or no deal.

May seems to have actually lost a few supporters of her deal since Friday, and given the performance of the opposition tonight and the prospect of round 3 of indicative votes they will still be unwilling to go for May's deal.

Which leaves no deal.

There is talk of a managed no deal. There is no such thing. The EU plan for that is essentially to push us into the deal in order to get a trading relationship.

And that will push us closer to the us. Which is what many torys want. And what polling seems to suggest they will have surprising support for.

Sorry folks but it don't look great tonight.

The opposition benches may look back on tonight and think they screwed it. I hope I'm wrong. But I fear tonight might have sealed our fate.

Tomorrow may has a 5hr cabinet. And a secret document dmfor the cabinet to study first.

It's going to get bumpy from here on in...

I was one who said ages ago that the current UK was still less than 100 years old - this was after someone had offered the opinion that the borders had been stable for a few hundred years. I think this came as a shock for many to realise this fact.

Peregrina · 02/04/2019 01:33

Corbyn is also stupid enough to vote for an election, if May tries to pull that off.

I'm terrified now. If I can't get my meds I'll die. My GP said God help us all, when I asked her what to do.

Songsofexperience · 02/04/2019 02:59

Bad case of insomnia... Not all brexit induced but it doesn't help. Anybody around?

In the US, out for the evening trying to forget about this. But our house, pension, family are all in the UK. We can run but we can't hide and it doesn't look great at present.
But nothing has been decided yet and maybe there is still time to prevent total chaos.

lonelyplanetmum · 02/04/2019 05:36

the party has insufficient funds to fight an election atm

Poor Tories. Well that's what happens when you say ' Fuck business'.

I don't think a GE will help
unless there's any chance voters ditch the ERG.

Why can't JRM give their campaign funds a few quid?

Or maybe even some American money route ( like the Mercers).

At each stage of this mess the ERG have been driving the agenda. Ranging from holding the ref in the first place, to special future promises made to them at Chequers. It seems to me they are gradually getting more internal party support than less?

The least they can do is use their deep pockets to personally fund an election campaign for their loyal party should the need arise.

'I'm worn out from this so have no idea how you lot in the UK are feeling. I can't believe this shit is happening.'

This. I'm so fucking sorry, for all of you over there.

Well that was incredibly depressing to wake up this morning and find it did all happen. I subject DS and friend to Brexit updates on school run and said yesterday I thought beginning of week would be carnage then things improve by end of week. What I have based this on I have no bloody clue, I guess it’s the desperate need to feel there’s a chance things could be ok.

Was really depressed yesterday as friend was telling me her DD and MIL had gone head to head over Sunday lunch and the MIL was basically saying how much she hated the Germans. I’d said to friend a couple of months ago that I don’t think I can stay here long term knowing how much some of the population hate half of my heritage . I know she thought me a bit over dramatic at the time and has a EU parent herself but after seeing her MIL in action she understood.

lonelyplanetmum · 02/04/2019 06:48

Remember that there at least 16,000,000 people who don't hate half your heritage.

'I'm worn out from this so have no idea how you lot in the UK are feeling. I can't believe this shit is happening. I'm so fucking sorry, for all of you over there.

Not sure which of the denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance stages most remainers are at. I oscillate between all of them -still working on acceptance though.

frumpety · 02/04/2019 06:49

So its down to no deal, revoke or compromise ? Or a GE no one can afford ?

Did someone say TM could ignore the indicative votes anyway and that any compromise option would need to involve the WA ?

Horehound · 02/04/2019 06:52

Pmk.

bellinisurge · 02/04/2019 06:54

That's about the size of it @frumpety , by my reckoning. We are no different to where we have been for a while. The indicative votes may have shown May what there is a majority for and she might have tried to tweak accordingly.
But there isn't one. All she can do is try again with her unloved WA or a PV or a GE (these two might buy us some time if nothing else) or No Deal or Revoke.

PostNotInHaste · 02/04/2019 06:55

Thank you Lonelyplanetmum I think things are a bit raw this morning, we live in a Leave area which doesn’t help. I am struggling with the fact my own father voted for this and doesn’t seem to have changed his mind.

Yes Frumpety TM can ignore and I am not sure about second part about the WA.

BelfastBloke · 02/04/2019 07:04

I don't actually understand the logic of [Theresa May] calling a General Election, even if she feels it's her only option. What does it solve, from TM's point of view?

How does that help [her, the Conservatives, the country]? Is the thinking that the EU will give the UK a long delay if a GE is called, and maybe it'll provide some clarity?

Random18 · 02/04/2019 07:06

And what do the DUP want? They have essentially voted for No Deal if they won’t vote for her WA agreement?

lonelyplanetmum · 02/04/2019 07:09

I am struggling with the fact my own father voted for this and doesn’t seem to have changed his mind

That must be so tough.

I experienced several years of end of life caring for both my parents, who eventually died, in the years before the referendum. I often think how even harder those years would have been now.I think my Mum would have regurgitated Leave rhetoric. That conflict between loving some one but being polarised in your views is very difficult.

bellinisurge · 02/04/2019 07:10

@BelfastBloke , a GE would buy us some time. There is only an outside chance it will result in a majority government

Anytime anybody ever hears someone say this - please please take the time to explain that, no matter what form leave takes, it is a process which will take years if not decades. And it will take up time in the news and time in parliament for all those years. The only way to 'get it over with' is to remain. It goes away instantly and we never have to hear about it again.

I must say this about 5 times a day in work mainly to leave voting colleagues that the only way of it going away is to revoke. Otherwise we’ll still be dealing with the consequences and talking about it for a decade at least
