Westminstenders: For Whom the Bell Tolls

Although another round of Indicative Votes is scheduled, arguably the chance for a soft Brexit has gone for two reasons.

Parliament was unable to show a majority because those on the opposition benches were too busy saying 'I want this but only on these terms' or still being too unwilling to compromise. Thus the opportunity and point for a third round starts to look weak.

The second is that Tory MPs were resolute in an opposition to a soft Brexit.

Unless May decides to be the next Robert Peel and go for a soft Brexit on the back of opposition vote its not going to happen.

This leaves May's deal as it stands or no deal.

May seems to have actually lost a few supporters of her deal since Friday, and given the performance of the opposition tonight and the prospect of round 3 of indicative votes they will still be unwilling to go for May's deal.

Which leaves no deal.

There is talk of a managed no deal. There is no such thing. The EU plan for that is essentially to push us into the deal in order to get a trading relationship.

And that will push us closer to the us. Which is what many torys want. And what polling seems to suggest they will have surprising support for.

Sorry folks but it don't look great tonight.

The opposition benches may look back on tonight and think they screwed it. I hope I'm wrong. But I fear tonight might have sealed our fate.

Tomorrow may has a 5hr cabinet. And a secret document dmfor the cabinet to study first.

It's going to get bumpy from here on in...

TM can blame JC for no deal, blame him if they go for a PV, blame him for soft brexit.

Anyone else think these repeated short extensions increase tension in a way a long one wouldn't? Imagine if you are looking forward to brexit and you get your hopes up but then your hope is squashed and squashed again. Kinda mean.

ElenadeClermont · 02/04/2019 19:18

Why does it only matter when leavers are angry?!

The80sweregreat · 02/04/2019 19:19

' you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink' is another great saying which applies to a lot of people.
Both horses here are old and stubborn.
Put some other people in the room as well. Pinning this mess totally on Corbyn isn't fair.

The80sweregreat · 02/04/2019 19:20

Everyone is angry. We're at stalemate.
The EU must be beyond frustrated. Also angry.

Violetparis · 02/04/2019 19:20

Corbyn should just take Kier Starmer with him. Heard on the radio someone saying she is no longer kicking the can down the road, she is kicking it into Corbyn's garden.

When's Janey Godley getting her own prime time TV show?

The80sweregreat · 02/04/2019 19:23

She is kicking it into his garden and his allotment! If only it wasn't JC in charge of labour.

OublietteBravo · 02/04/2019 19:23

I’d make legislating for EU elections a condition of engagement if I were Corbyn. And a confirmatory referendum. At the very least. She is not to be trusted.

Random18 · 02/04/2019 19:25

@woman pure dead brilliant

Holidayshopping · 02/04/2019 19:25

I don’t see any point in a confirmatory referendum. If it’s as someone explained earlier-passing her WA and then asking the public afterwards if they liked it, what’s the point?!

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 19:26

Sam Coates Times @samcoatestimes
Extension

14 against
Williamson, Fox, Mordaunt, Truss, Javid, Grayling, Wright, Leadsom, Hunt, Brokenshire, Evans, Barclay, Cairns, Lewis

10 For
Gauke, Hancock, Hammond, Clark, Hinz, Lidington, Perry, Gove, Rudd, Cox

Others "undecided"

- No overt threats of resignation at the meeting

- Clare Perry called for gvt of national unity involving Tom Watson and said (apparently approving according to some) Tory party could split and predicted comments would be leaked.

- Damian Hinds called for STV system to choose

- Williamson one of biggest critics of May strategy. Said Labour couldn't be trusted because they are too tribal, said the party had been criticising Corbyn for years now relying on him to deliver brexit

- Williamson asked for people's positions on long extension shd be recorded

Much signalling for a leadership election going on.

So here we go again with TM playing her games once again.
How can she expect Corbyn to agree her deal and offer him involvement in the next process when we all know the minute the WA goes through she will resign and the next PM will just tear up agreement struck with JC.
If he doesn't meet her then he will be blamed for a no deal brexit which is her plan anyway. Blame someone else always.
If he meets her then it will be his fault for last minute deal.
The poor guy will be damned whether he does or not. The labour party will be blamed if they can't agree. And everyone knows that the only person who will be compromising will be JC.
I absolutely loathe TM! 7 hours and she came up with framing Corbyn. Playing games with the country she is beyond despicable!Angry

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 19:28

Boris Johnson @ borisjohnson
It is very disappointing that the cabinet has decided to entrust the final handling of Brexit to Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party. It now seems all too likely that British trade policy and key law making powers will be handed over to Brussels - with no say for the U.K.

prettybird · 02/04/2019 19:29

Woman - I'm not suggesting that it's right that they don't want to hold the elections because they can't afford them. Quite the opposite Sad

It just demonstrates how much of a game this is to them and that "democracy" only applies when and how it suits the main parties (if we are lucky) and the Government ( in power but not in control if we are not) Angry

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 19:29

Press Association @ pa
#Breaking Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said he is "very happy" to meet Theresa May after she offered to sit down with him to agree a plan which allows the UK to leave the EU with a deal

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 19:31

Alberto Nardelli @albertonardelli
A senior EU official tells me that the withdrawal agreement would need to be approved by MPs next week [if the UK doesn’t participate in European Parliament elections] because otherwise a short extension is “not imaginable” as it would “jeopardise” EP elections

I should add that most people I have spoken to are not clear as to exactly what PM May has proposed in terms of timetable. Hence, president Tusk's call for patience.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2019 19:31

The EU would presumably still require legislation by about 10 April for EP elections

However, they would probably be delighted if she is at last going for a cross-party Brexit resolution

  • it means that there is a much better chance of the UK actually sticking to what is agreed,
not beingdependent on one party
BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2019 19:32

Oh, cross-post about ep elections

BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2019 19:35

I'd be astonished if Corbyn & May can agree to anything before 10 April,
let alone allow at least 48 hours for the EU legal team to draft a new PD

We really need a long extension and EP elections

A rushed Brexit would probably be a bad Brexit

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/04/2019 19:35

If TM & JC cannot agree, it will go to the House to decide.

woman19 · 02/04/2019 19:36

DG completely agree about Leave not having a plan.

No-one could until negotiations had happened with the EU. It would be like claiming you know exactly how your divorce will turn out without ever negotiating with your ex partner. Leave campaign could get away with promising anything because ultimately the people behind it would never be the ones tasked with delivering it. They were just the ‘ideas guys’.

My jaw hit the floor when Redwood claimed he promised nothing other than leaving ! Backtracking like mad.

Leave was nothing more than a ‘Concept’ until the EU had been negotiated with. How often does the reality ever match the concept.

No Deal equals No Plan. End of.
