Westminstenders: For Whom the Bell Tolls

Although another round of Indicative Votes is scheduled, arguably the chance for a soft Brexit has gone for two reasons.

Parliament was unable to show a majority because those on the opposition benches were too busy saying 'I want this but only on these terms' or still being too unwilling to compromise. Thus the opportunity and point for a third round starts to look weak.

The second is that Tory MPs were resolute in an opposition to a soft Brexit.

Unless May decides to be the next Robert Peel and go for a soft Brexit on the back of opposition vote its not going to happen.

This leaves May's deal as it stands or no deal.

May seems to have actually lost a few supporters of her deal since Friday, and given the performance of the opposition tonight and the prospect of round 3 of indicative votes they will still be unwilling to go for May's deal.

Which leaves no deal.

There is talk of a managed no deal. There is no such thing. The EU plan for that is essentially to push us into the deal in order to get a trading relationship.

And that will push us closer to the us. Which is what many torys want. And what polling seems to suggest they will have surprising support for.

Sorry folks but it don't look great tonight.

The opposition benches may look back on tonight and think they screwed it. I hope I'm wrong. But I fear tonight might have sealed our fate.

Tomorrow may has a 5hr cabinet. And a secret document dmfor the cabinet to study first.

It's going to get bumpy from here on in...

Apparently she hadn’t spoken to JC beforehand so the first he knew was when listening to the broadcast live. She wants to be able to blame him for no deal. Thinking about her party once again.

woman19 · 02/04/2019 18:57

We also know the returning officers have been given the green light to order all the extra ballot papers and little stubby pencils they might need in the weeks to come

Reposting.
And R4 WATO today had item on preparations happening now for EU elections here.

After five hours they come up with a ' let's have a new whipping boy' in here so we can lay the blame with other people and not just ourselves.
If there is another General Election it will be based in on this single issue ( with other things as side issues ) and Tory propaganda will be ' they won't play ball with this do you trust them with brexit' and remainers or leavers might not vote labour.

horseshit · 02/04/2019 18:58

Her plan is working already, the BBC are laying it on thick, like this is the ultimate compromise on Treeza’s part and if nothing was agreed it would be Labour’s or parliament’s fault. Though they did broadcast Nicola Sturgeon’s reaction, which quoted the Ian Dunt tweet mentioned upthreat.

Holidayshopping · 02/04/2019 19:03

Is there anything Corbyn can do to ‘win’ in this situation??

Littlespaces · 02/04/2019 19:03

Ah - Jeremy Corbyn is the sacrificial addition to get WA past the Speaker. I thought it would be the Downing Street cat.

Massive trap to avoid EU elections. EU won't allow it anyway.

PestyMachtubernahme · 02/04/2019 19:04

Coach glad you delurked.
I think at this point in the game, agree the WA. Then a referendum on the deal choices. But remember you can't go back to leave or remain that's been done. Hash out a Norway deal, then go to a referendum Norway plus or full membership in say 5 years time once the dust has settled. Public will vote for EU membership having still a somewhat fresh memory of this crisis. Bish bash bosh 60months as an outcast and back in having never really left just sat in limbo under a WA.

Five years in the naughty corner could work.

MockerstheFeManist · 02/04/2019 19:04

Am now seeing the Ghost of Kier Hardie appearing before JC, telling him: This is your moment. Be you a harmless allotment herbivore or Lion of the People.

Then the Ghost of Roger Daltrey (when he was good) appears and warns that We Won't Get Fooled Again.

And then the St Winalots School Choir sing Grandad, We Love You, Don't Sell Us Out You Beardy Bastard. That's what we all think of you.

Don't Fuck It Up Jez

prettybird · 02/04/2019 19:06

What the hell is the big deal with eu elections? What the fuck does it matter if we have to participate?

Because apparently the 17.4 million who voted Leave will spontaneously combust if we have to Shock (Now, there's an idea Wink)

On a more serious note, apparently neither the Conservative nor the Labour Party can afford it Hmm - nor have they prepared for them or selected candidates Shock (hell mend them Grin - the LibDems and SNP are ready Smile)

PestyMachtubernahme · 02/04/2019 19:06

Corbyn needs to say very publicly that of course he will talk, as soon as she has arranged for EU elections, just in case the people have changed their minds. As his back stop Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2019 19:06

These threads have zero tolerance for anti-semitism and have furiously criticised Corbyn for tolerating it

I despise politically motivated posters who make false claims of anti-semitism or of racism,
having suffered years of very open racism myself

The80sweregreat · 02/04/2019 19:07

My M P ( tory) still won't vote for the WA.

She needs Labour MPs to get her deal thorough and get them on board it seems to me. Via their leader a lot are not keen on.
Could be very tricky.

dreichuplands · 02/04/2019 19:07

I think the best way to deal with it would be to say, 'yes. This is a national emergency let's have a cross party solution we need all the parties involved, let's invite them all. We need to start we a blank sheet and an open mind. Let's get started 8am tomorrow morning. We'll bring hot rolls you bring coffee'
Call her bluff but widen the circle out to dilute blame game.

horseshit · 02/04/2019 19:07

Reporters repeating May has committed to implement whatever parliament decide, if she and JC can’t agree. She knows she can whip against anything that’s not her plan and it most likely won’t get through.

Random18 · 02/04/2019 19:08

Hopefully JC will have enough time to think of some conditions.
If she is trying to make him the fall guy then this is a new low even for her

DGRossetti · 02/04/2019 19:08

Then the Ghost of Roger Daltrey (when he was good) appears and warns that We Won't Get Fooled Again.

Points of order:

  1. sadly, Daltry is a Leaver - with a slightly "well I'll be OK" edge to his thinking.

  2. Pete Townshend wrote that line, and just for completeness, the last lines are...

Meet the new boss !
Same as the old Boss !

The80sweregreat · 02/04/2019 19:09

I think others should be there as well.
This screams a stitch up from a desperate cabinet.
She said about ' national unity' but then just invite one for talks?

DGRossetti · 02/04/2019 19:09

Hopefully JC will have enough time to think of some conditions.

His reflex reaction in his sleep should be "Peoples Vote". As per Labour party policy.

MockerstheFeManist · 02/04/2019 19:11

But his more hirsuite persona of 1973 is true to his painfully permed roots.

And St Pete also wrote

We tried to speak between lines of oration
You could only repeat what we told you
Your act belongs to a dying nation
They don't know that we own you

Random18 · 02/04/2019 19:12

@DGR this is JC who is against a PV we are talking about.

I was more thinking if getting assurance that we will legislate for EP elections.

Hopefully he will ask for a PV though

CordeliaEarhart · 02/04/2019 19:12

I agree with PPs. JC should insist on leaders of all parties. And all parties (other than tories) support a PV. So TM would blame others for needing a PV and they put on a united front to refuse to accept blame.

Littlespaces · 02/04/2019 19:12

@mrjamesob
You can explain it to them but you can't understand it for them.

Might have this inscribed on my gravestone.

I know this feeling.

PestyMachtubernahme · 02/04/2019 19:13

TM can't manage to whip her MPs to vote for her deal, how does she think Corbyn will manage?
TM : My deal or his
Tory Mps : Gosh TM what a wonderful deal, why did you not mention it earlier.

She is just hoping their hatred of JC is greater than anything else.

woman19 · 02/04/2019 19:15

apparently neither the Conservative nor the Labour Party can afford it
When did elections start being cancelled because parties 'couldn't afford it'?

It's another naughty fib imo

The80sweregreat · 02/04/2019 19:16

If they say ' ok, another vote' it will please me but the hardcore leavers will be mad as hell. Riled up by my MP and the types that write vile comments on the daily mail website.
It's a way out of a conundrum but will cause a lot of anger.
Just go for May's deal.
Best of a bad job.
( still cause anger, might maybe not as much?)
Who knows?
