Although another round of Indicative Votes is scheduled, arguably the chance for a soft Brexit has gone for two reasons.

Parliament was unable to show a majority because those on the opposition benches were too busy saying 'I want this but only on these terms' or still being too unwilling to compromise. Thus the opportunity and point for a third round starts to look weak.

The second is that Tory MPs were resolute in an opposition to a soft Brexit.

Unless May decides to be the next Robert Peel and go for a soft Brexit on the back of opposition vote its not going to happen.

This leaves May's deal as it stands or no deal.

May seems to have actually lost a few supporters of her deal since Friday, and given the performance of the opposition tonight and the prospect of round 3 of indicative votes they will still be unwilling to go for May's deal.

Which leaves no deal.

There is talk of a managed no deal. There is no such thing. The EU plan for that is essentially to push us into the deal in order to get a trading relationship.

And that will push us closer to the us. Which is what many torys want. And what polling seems to suggest they will have surprising support for.

Sorry folks but it don't look great tonight.

The opposition benches may look back on tonight and think they screwed it. I hope I'm wrong. But I fear tonight might have sealed our fate.

Tomorrow may has a 5hr cabinet. And a secret document dmfor the cabinet to study first.

It's going to get bumpy from here on in...

Would love to be a fly on the wall at Donald Tusk's house right now.
Seven hours of Candy Crush and that's the best they could come up with.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 02/04/2019 18:33

Tory MP on Sky now saying 'well at least now we know No Deal is definitely off the table'

FFS.

No. It. Isn't.

What is the matter with these idiots?

horseshit · 02/04/2019 18:33

Does anyone know how May’s statement impacts Cooper’s Bill? Since she’s basically said she would request an extension?

Icantreachthepretzels · 02/04/2019 18:33

I was less dedicated than you Hazard - I just personalised the pro forma email and then sent the same one to all of them. They won't check with each other to see if I changed the wording!

hobblingawayslowly · 02/04/2019 18:34

Ian Dunt not convinced by that statement.

AutumnCrow · 02/04/2019 18:34

It's like she's wheeled herself out with this ridiculous holding statement to either buy time or cover up her Cabinet threatening her.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 02/04/2019 18:35

May’s plan is....

We need a plan.

Meanwhile, there’s a shitty thing I’ve been trying to get you to buy for three years...shall I bring it out again....?

LonelyTiredandLow · 02/04/2019 18:35

Well, last time she tried to sit down with Corbyn he walked out because Chakka wasn't elected...
I won't hold my breath. I don't even feel sorry if he gets some of the blame, he hasn't exactly been an opposition. I suspect he'll posture and bluster and walk out. Seems to be his go to if required to think.

The80sweregreat · 02/04/2019 18:35

Just caught up with the news.
So Theresa is now going to get ' I want another election' Corbyn on board.
Good luck with that one! He will be even more determined to put the boot in.

Tanith · 02/04/2019 18:35

“Seven hours of Candy Crush and that's the best they could come up with.”

They couldn’t play Candy Crush: she nicked their phones.

MockerstheFeManist · 02/04/2019 18:36

Assuming she hasn't nicked all their SIM cards, the leaking will now begin.

Horehound · 02/04/2019 18:37

Its clear donald tusk is happy to wait however long we need... maybe infinity amount of time.

Belindabelle · 02/04/2019 18:37

Thing is if Corbyn tells her to F off (as he should), he will look like the unreasonable one.

SingaSong12 · 02/04/2019 18:37

Agree about the embarrassment. I normally listen to Today on Radio 4 when I can cope with Brexit news. The views from the foreign newspapers and EU politicians of incredulity are depressing but concise, clear, cogent ... then they do the long 8.10 interview with a hapless MP.

EweSurname · 02/04/2019 18:37

Ian Dunt
@IanDunt
This is a profoundly dangerous moment.

May is requesting an extension past April 12th - but not past May 22nd. That puts us in the danger zone. Past the point of Euro election participation where no further extension would be possible.

That is the May deal vs no-deal territory. The words about working with opposition and indicative votes are welcome, but look past that at the actions she is taking.

My instinct is that this is a trap. When that statement started, I was impressed by the tone and the content. But the giveaway is at the end, when she says withdrawal bill must be passed by May 22nd.

Tanith · 02/04/2019 18:37

I wonder if she took the opportunity to have them bugged?

The80sweregreat · 02/04/2019 18:37

They were probably playing chess.
Then missing their phones. 5 hours without a phone will make them twitchy!

chocolateworshipper · 02/04/2019 18:38

Oh please let it be true that she hadn't told JC and he's just dropped his fork whilst eating tea and watching the news Grin

Belindabelle · 02/04/2019 18:39

Tusk has the patience of a saint. Thankful for intelligent politicians.

horseshit · 02/04/2019 18:39

She’s really got herself the perfect scapegoat hasn’t she. If Labour stick by their policy of a PV, she can blame them for refusing to compromise. If they don’t, she can call them out for turning their back on their own membership.

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 18:40

Remember May's idea of compromise.

"this is the deal. Compromise. Otherwise its no deal under Boris"

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 18:41

I lean towards what Dunt says.

OP posts:
Apileofballyhoo · 02/04/2019 18:41

So the new plan is to get Labour to agree to the withdrawal agreement.

So if Labour don't, No Deal will be their fault. If Labour do, they'll share the blame for Brexit.

And then there's the problem of re-opening the WA. Because if I were Labour I wouldn't agree to anything until it was international law. There's no way I'd commit to voting through the WA on the basis of the PD.

Apileofballyhoo · 02/04/2019 18:42

I see we're all in agreement - this changes fuck all. New Tory policy - bring Labour down with us.

Wonnacott35 · 02/04/2019 18:42

Do you think she's mentioned this to Corbyn or is he eating his tea and has dropped his fork with shock?

LOL brilliant!
