Although another round of Indicative Votes is scheduled, arguably the chance for a soft Brexit has gone for two reasons.

Parliament was unable to show a majority because those on the opposition benches were too busy saying 'I want this but only on these terms' or still being too unwilling to compromise. Thus the opportunity and point for a third round starts to look weak.

The second is that Tory MPs were resolute in an opposition to a soft Brexit.

Unless May decides to be the next Robert Peel and go for a soft Brexit on the back of opposition vote its not going to happen.

This leaves May's deal as it stands or no deal.

May seems to have actually lost a few supporters of her deal since Friday, and given the performance of the opposition tonight and the prospect of round 3 of indicative votes they will still be unwilling to go for May's deal.

Which leaves no deal.

There is talk of a managed no deal. There is no such thing. The EU plan for that is essentially to push us into the deal in order to get a trading relationship.

And that will push us closer to the us. Which is what many torys want. And what polling seems to suggest they will have surprising support for.

Sorry folks but it don't look great tonight.

The opposition benches may look back on tonight and think they screwed it. I hope I'm wrong. But I fear tonight might have sealed our fate.

Tomorrow may has a 5hr cabinet. And a secret document dmfor the cabinet to study first.

It's going to get bumpy from here on in...

But the EU said they'll only agree to an extension if they come up with a good plan. Talking to JC is not "a good plan".

May agrees to abide by decision of the House of Commons if she and Corbyn can not agree. So by next week, will Jeremy Corbyn take over from Oliver Letwin as Prime-Minister-In-All-But-Name? Or will that be Ken Clarke? Or Peter Kyle?

Peregrina · 02/04/2019 18:16

Hmmm taking Corbyn down with her. Spread the blame.

Not entirely unfair in his case - he has fallen in with her too much. Most of the paid up members of Labour support Remain, and he should have done much much more for them.

dontcallmelen · 02/04/2019 18:16

She really is some piece of work.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/04/2019 18:16

Well, yes, that's true Horehound.

Did she mention anything about the accompanying PD, or is that the plan that she's going to dream up with Corbyn?

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 18:16

She's said any deal needs the WA.
It does.

If Labour have a red line on that, it's a problem.

If she's going for a compromise, (I'm doubtful) it has to be a CU of some sort as a minimum. She knows that. He knows that.

But she's said about the house being binding. So if there is a breakthrough in IV3 that would be significant.

But remember she secretly whipped against CM2. (and possibly the other options too) despite it being a 'free vote'

She has said no EU elections but longer extension.

So 22nd May would be the final date. Unless the EU say otherwise. And that means EP elections.

If they aren't legislated for before the EUCO they can't extend longer.

It seems to me to be a pitch for an extension to 22nd May. To avoid EP elections and no deal.

I don't know.

It WILL make the ERG go mental.

So unless she HAS gone Robert Peel she's lying. And trying to pin it on Labour.

Corbyn would be a massive disaster to this country. Much worse than what is happening now.

Somerville · 02/04/2019 18:17

I feel faintly positive about this. It's better then an announcement of no-deal, as I was fearing.

tobee · 02/04/2019 18:17

Amber Rudd looking to cameras and smiling (ish)

Lisette1940 · 02/04/2019 18:17

Do you think she's mentioned this to Corbyn or is he eating his tea and has dropped his fork with shock?

Random18 · 02/04/2019 18:17

This is progress surely - probably too late. But she’s not going for NO Deal. This is probably going to split her party.

But she’s doing that over no deal?

I may be naive but ultimately as others have said the WA needs to pass anyway. Hopefully that can be done now and we get a much softer Brexit

prettybird · 02/04/2019 18:17

I disagree with Beth Rigby who is suggesting that it is the strong Brexiters who are highest up on her Resignation Watch.

I think her statement demonstrates that the ERG are still controlling her as they know that the most likely outcome of this is a Non, Nein, No, Ochi from the EU and a No from Corbyn, so we're still on the fast track to No Deal Sad

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/04/2019 18:17

I thought she said that if she cannot agree with Corbyn, then she will abide by what the House wants.
So No Deal pushed back potentially to 22nd May.
European correspondent has just said the UK cannot be part of EU if it does not take part in the elections, otherwise the whole European Parliament will be invalid.

I think we are looking at European elections, long extension.
Probably a vote of no confidence and a general election.
I need to rewind to watch that speech again.
My head is spinning.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 02/04/2019 18:17

Exactly. 'Asking Magic Grandpa To Take Some Of The Heat Off Me' really really isn't going to wash with Barnier et al.

Easilyflattered · 02/04/2019 18:17

Does anyone else feel like we're now entirely dependent on the EU politicians to be the adults in the room now?

They won't extend for this will they?

sunglasses123 · 02/04/2019 18:17

I think Sky news coverage is awful. All that shouting out. As if they would shout back!

Icantreachthepretzels · 02/04/2019 18:18

Thanks for the lib dem link hazard - duly emailed. My account already recognised most of their email addresses Blush. Interesting to see there were a lot more than usual. Last time there were only about 8 to send to - this time there were over 20.

And glad to see that my mp was no longer among the number they considered 'key' - they seem to have worked out which ones are lost causes.

I was so busy emailing I missed the announcement ... what's happening?

hobblingawayslowly · 02/04/2019 18:18

Let's see if the EU even give us an extension. They don't have to.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/04/2019 18:18

Corbyn would be a massive disaster to this country. Much worse than what is happening now.

Why?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 02/04/2019 18:18

Beth Rigby seems to be interpreting this as a soft Brexit. Keeps yelling at Brexiteer cabinet members ‘Are you resigning’ and at Remainer cabinets members ‘You must be happy’.

Somerville · 02/04/2019 18:19

I can't imagine a bigger disaster to this country than now, sunglasses. I'm no Corbyn fan but it can't get any worse. I'd like to see him step up and offer some leadership, since our Prime Minister is incapable of doing so.

hobblingawayslowly · 02/04/2019 18:19

What the hell is the big deal with eu elections? What the fuck does it matter if we have to participate?

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 02/04/2019 18:19

Corbyn would be a massive disaster to this country. Much worse than what is happening now

Utter tosh. But they're not getting anywhere near power for a long time so you don't need to worry.

hobblingawayslowly · 02/04/2019 18:19

She needs to go. I'd honestly rather have corbyn as PM and that is really saying something as I detest the man.

Holidayshopping · 02/04/2019 18:20

So, it’s still May’s (shit) deal or No Deal, but now it’s Corbyn’s fault?
