Westminstenders: For Whom the Bell Tolls

Although another round of Indicative Votes is scheduled, arguably the chance for a soft Brexit has gone for two reasons.

Parliament was unable to show a majority because those on the opposition benches were too busy saying 'I want this but only on these terms' or still being too unwilling to compromise. Thus the opportunity and point for a third round starts to look weak.

The second is that Tory MPs were resolute in an opposition to a soft Brexit.

Unless May decides to be the next Robert Peel and go for a soft Brexit on the back of opposition vote its not going to happen.

This leaves May's deal as it stands or no deal.

May seems to have actually lost a few supporters of her deal since Friday, and given the performance of the opposition tonight and the prospect of round 3 of indicative votes they will still be unwilling to go for May's deal.

Which leaves no deal.

There is talk of a managed no deal. There is no such thing. The EU plan for that is essentially to push us into the deal in order to get a trading relationship.

And that will push us closer to the us. Which is what many torys want. And what polling seems to suggest they will have surprising support for.

Sorry folks but it don't look great tonight.

The opposition benches may look back on tonight and think they screwed it. I hope I'm wrong. But I fear tonight might have sealed our fate.

Tomorrow may has a 5hr cabinet. And a secret document dmfor the cabinet to study first.

It's going to get bumpy from here on in...

@hasenstein
So sorry for your loss. What a shame you lost such a dear relative. You sound like a very caring person with already much to deal with. I hope you get support from your family. 💐

DanaSchmidt · 02/04/2019 16:39

Darling Nikita

Im no fan of Theresa May, but at least it will be our choice, not the EU Kremlin.

PinkieTuscadero · 02/04/2019 16:40

So many Kool Aid sippers.

lonelyplanetmum · 02/04/2019 16:41

@hasenstein
So sorry for your and your partner's loss. She lives on in your memories.💐

Littlebelina · 02/04/2019 16:41

I only read the Daily Telegraph

Explains a lot

Hasenstein · 02/04/2019 16:42

EU Kremlin

Words fail me. Switch to "ignore".

1tisILeClerc · 02/04/2019 16:42

{You can draw your own conclusions as to why.}
The 100,000 visas might have something to do with it.

{ Trump like him or loath him is doing a fantastic job.}
Have you tried asking real Americans?

Songsofexperience · 02/04/2019 16:42

This isn't in the UK's interests, we don't have the same interests as the US.

Yes indeed, people are fooled by the common language thinking it means more cultural alignment. It doesn't. The phrase 'undeserving poor' in the US doesn't really exist because if you're poor it's because you're undeserving anyway.

dreichuplands · 02/04/2019 16:43

There are actually concerns about some aspects of the US economy and the impact of the tax cuts that Trump put through. Some parts of the economy are working well others are struggling more than they should be. Any leader who shuts down his own government at considerable impact to his own countries economy should be viewed with caution from an economic standpoint.

horseshit · 02/04/2019 16:43

Dana, the UK can relax immigration rules for non-EU citizens even while remaining a member. As for “at least it’ll be our choice” - so privatised health care or, say, a return to the death penalty would be fine, as long as it was “our choice”?

Jason118 · 02/04/2019 16:44

@DanaSchmidt
Bless you, did you not have all your meds today? Smile Hope you feel a bit better later.

DanaSchmidt · 02/04/2019 16:45

I have lived in the US, healthcare I received there was far superior to the UK. when you went to the doctors they actually listened to you and didn't rush you out the door in 10 minutes.
But I respect that in the UK we have a rationed care system, run by NICE who play G-d.
Leaving the EU does not mean not having a national health service, it means saving the health serive from "health tourists" who use and abuse it.
Also the NHS a different argument needs a radical shake up. we cant let pharmaceutical giants bully the NHS and rip us off, but thats for another thread!

DanaSchmidt · 02/04/2019 16:47

horseshit

Is private health care or the death penalty bad?

HazardGhost · 02/04/2019 16:47

Three cheers for more indicative votes! Hip hip HOORAY hip hip HOORAY hip hip HOORAY!

Sovereignty bitches! See how we have this whilst in the EU? It's amazing it's like we're a free country. Because we are. Because the EU is a trade and standards union nothing more or nothing less.

I need to send out more emails!

Songsofexperience · 02/04/2019 16:49

we cant let pharmaceutical giants bully the NHS and rip us off, but thats for another thread!

No, that's exactly the right topic.
US big pharma is poised to pounce on the nhs. How is leaving the EU going to protect the nhs?

Sarahlou63 · 02/04/2019 16:49

Cabinet finally breaking up...

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 02/04/2019 16:49

Cabinets finished. Stand by your beds and stop playing with Dana, bless!

jasjas1973 · 02/04/2019 16:50

@DanaSchmidt

Assuming your serious?

We can trade with almost any country in the world, either on an EU trade or WTO right now... leave on no-deal and we have to negotiate dozens of trade deals just to get where we are now. Germany sells 4x more to China than we do! we run a trade surplus with US, they will want to alter that.

We will lose tariff and friction free trade with our nearest and largest partners, lose galileo too and co-op on latest euro fighter.

We already have super low corp tax and are lowering it still further... what "red tape" ? you ever dealt with Gov.uk?

Importers won't lower prices on goods if tariffs fall for some products, why should they? more profit for them, as we see with falling/rising oil prices.

Pros and cons with FOM.

Try and read more widely

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 02/04/2019 16:50

X-post!

Songsofexperience · 02/04/2019 16:50

And dana health tourism is very very far down the list of woes afflicting the NHS.

horseshit · 02/04/2019 16:51

Dana privatised health care in the style of the US is bad, yes. There are examples where it can work, for example the Netherlands.
The death penalty is bad, plain and simple.

HazardGhost · 02/04/2019 16:53

Dp napping, news channel on.

lonelyplanetmum · 02/04/2019 16:54

I’m glad there’s an engaging Leaver. I always have the several questions which I never get a satisfactory answer to. The first is:

What is next on the list- which of the following institutions should we also leave?

You see I think this departure hasn’t been planned well. You won your heart’s desire regarding the EU.I just want to know what’s next in the direction of travel...(dare I say) a better plan for the next exit?

wiki~list~which~next?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 02/04/2019 16:54

Hasenstein Flowers to you and DW. I’m so sorry that you have to deal with all this on top of your sad loss.
