Westminstenders: Happy Brexit Day!

Happy Brexit day!

Oh wait. No its not.

May looks like she is going to bring the MVIII (Meaningful Vote 3) tomorrow minus the PD (political declaration).

The legalities of this are questionable should the vote pass. The MV needs to have an accompanying PD, by law under the terms of the Withdrawal Act.

That's kind of irrelevant given the likelihood of the deal passing anyway. The DUP have apparently negotiated a 'Stormont Lock' to get more assurances, only for them promptly to say there's no chance of them voting for the deal anyway.

The vote is all about Labour v Conservatives and where we can lay the blame for no deal in two weeks time.

Meanwhile we are already into a prolonged Tory Leader Election with all its glorious gentlemanly behaviour.

Anyway its time for extra time and national riots for delaying Brexit.

Motheroffourdragons

Odds shortening on No to WA, drifting out on a Yes vote.

magimedi · 29/03/2019 09:35

De-lurking to say Happy No Brexit Day.

I am taking a small comfort from that.

And I thought you'd all enjoy seeing this ad Grin

Why are people thinking London will be unsafe?!

wheresmymojo · 29/03/2019 09:36

I know Geoff isn't much loved here but I do like his voice....I think he sounds like Dumbledore

wheresmymojo · 29/03/2019 09:39

Pepina There is a pro-Brexit march planned from 4pm.

Many will march peacefully BUT there are three groups there who are riling themselves up for riots.

The yellow vests, followers of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon and a Football hooligan group.

The fact they're starting at 4pm means they will most likely have spent a fair amount of time in the pub before starting.

FaFoutis · 29/03/2019 09:41

pepinana because the police have told us it will be unsafe.

pepinana · 29/03/2019 09:42

Bollocks, I'm in central London from 4 for a birthday dinner.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 29/03/2019 09:45

What the actual fuck is this?

The attorney general is basically forcing the WA in because we have run out of time? The bare faced lies spoken this morning have me fuming.

TM deserves her own special place in hell.

onalongsabbatical · 29/03/2019 09:45

@pepinana central London's still big, it's really Parliament Sq and nearby I'd avoid. Where are you going to be?

wheresmymojo · 29/03/2019 09:46

I would actually prefer the WA passed today - avoids no deal, everything still on the table for the political declaration.

We'll be leaving one way or another - although it's not my first choice pragmatically I'd vote for the WA today.

FaFoutis · 29/03/2019 09:48

Depends where it is pepinana. Near Parliament offices have closed and pubs told to get extra security or close but outside that is probably normal. I would avoid public transport, personally.

keepforgettingmyusername · 29/03/2019 09:48

I am listening to DUP on Radio Ulster and they are very much still for voting the deal down.

Graeme Demianyk @graemedemianyk

Give @nicholaswatt the Pulitzer: "I said to Cabinet one minister, 'why is the Prime Minister holding a vote when she is pretty sure she will lose?' And using very strong language, this Cabinet Minister said: 'Fuck knows. I am past caring. It is like the living dead in here.'"

I'm utterly gripped already, and a little bit in love with Hilary Benn

prettybird · 29/03/2019 09:52

I can't thole the AG's voice Shock (and I normally like a nice baritone Wink). It makes my skin crawl Sad

He really can't stop himself using 10 words when one will do Hmm

Adonis has apparently said that his Inbox is full of lawyers saying that what the government is trying to get parliament to do today is illegal.

The Speaker even semi acknowledged that yesterday but said that it wasn't his job to adjudicate on the legality or not of their motions - but (and I found this quite sad but ties in with what DGR has said previously) that it was also up to This Place to set the law - with the implication that it could retrospectively change the law. ConfusedAngry

yolofish · 29/03/2019 09:53

I dont understand how anyone could vote yes to the WA without the PD. Surely that's just like writing a blank cheque to whoever comes in next?
And is it even legal to separate the two? (I dont suppose legality makes much difference to this alleged govt but it should...)

MockerstheFeManist · 29/03/2019 09:54

Cox the Gammon-Faced Windbag would not inspire confidence in any situation except perhps a shouting competition.

Tonsilss · 29/03/2019 09:59

What did people think of the Mervyn King (former head of Bank of England) interview on Radio 4 this morning? He is advocating a 6 month + extension and then No Deal.
He thinks that the UK should have prepared for No Deal from the outset, and that that would have given us a stronger negotiating position with the EU.
God knows why he thinks that the EU would agree to a 6 month + extension leading to No Deal. He wasn't asked, obviously.
He also said that No Deal wouldn't be too bad, and that in making a decision on how to exit MPs should NOT take the economy into account, as it's issues like identity that matter to people, not the economic consequences.
Deeply depressing and weird interview I thought, bearing in mind who he is.

prettybird · 29/03/2019 10:01

The longer they leave him standing there, the more he will solidify the opposition. Grin

There are some benefits to having to thole his lies rambling. Grin

CordeliaEarhart · 29/03/2019 10:01

everything still on the table for the political declaration.

I'm not convinced by that, at all. One of the articles of the WA states that both parties will use their best endeavours to meet the proposals set out in the PD - and the PD is date referenced in it. It is unclear, legally, whether the a vote for the WA is, in fact, also a vote for the PD.

Tonsilss · 29/03/2019 10:03

I now agree with JasJas that passing the WA would be a disaster. The ERG will take over completely, and will trash the relationship with the EU completely and wreck what's left of the UK. I now expect that to happen and am pinning the little hope I have left on Scottish independence, which I think will be very very tough though.
I don't want Scottish independence. But I really really don't want to live in the kind of UK that the ERGers want to create.

Peregrina · 29/03/2019 10:03

The Times thinks there will be a long extension if it doesn't go through. I realise that just sets us up for the same rigmarole this time next year or a bit earlier,

Not necessarily, because more young people who would tend to vote Remain will be on the register and the older Leavers will have died off. So it might well become clear in the intervening time that the mandate for Brexit has expired.
