Westminstenders: Arse about Face

Everything about Brexit seems to have been done wrongly.

Setting red lines to rule out a compromise

The attempt to use executive power to trigger A50, that resulted in a court case

Triggering A50 before knowing what the UK wanted

Agreeing to the backstop before any Tory MP understood the GFA

Appointing a Brexit minister before checking he understood where Dover was.

May going on about NI and pissing off the DUP before they were just about to climb down.

Having a Meaningless Vote repeatedly with a gun to head.

Contempt of Parliament and just general fucking up.

Tonight, 3 days before we were due to leave the HoC finally sat down to decide what Brexit outcomes they thought would be a good idea - more than 2years after that should have happened.

And we now we are told the meaningful vote might be may even more meaningless by being wrapped up in the illusive Withdrawal Agreement Implimentation Bill.

Farce doesn't even cover it.

Anyway Indicative Vote results incoming in approx 15 mins.

I've been reading these threads avidly. It's helped me so much.

My question - I understood from here (and the news) that if Parliament doesn't vote on the WA by end tomorrow then we have to No Deal (or revoke!) on 12th April, because that's the language the EU have granted the extension with, ie pass WA tomorrow or else. But on C4 news there's discussion about more votes next week. Which is correct? Grateful to anyone who knows the answer!

NoWordForFluffy · 28/03/2019 20:00

Rumour of GE if WA isn't passed tomorrow. Just what we need! 🙄

Horehound · 28/03/2019 20:00

Both are happening. Because if the WA doesn't pass they need to go to EU with a way forward and they might get that from the votes on mnday.

CordeliaEarhart · 28/03/2019 20:00

If it passes by the end of tomorrow we have an extension til 22nd May to sort out necessary legislation.

If it doesn't, we have until the 12th of April to make a fucking decision on No Deal / Revoke / further extension with a clear plan of action and probably EP elections.

NoWordForFluffy · 28/03/2019 20:00

Link is Evolve Politics, by the way.

Wenttoseainasieve · 28/03/2019 20:02

@2015newstart

No, it doesn't automatically mean no deal. Say the votes on Monday were to come up with a new idea (wishful thinking) the E.U have indicated they would be receptive to that. So more likely a very long extension. Would need to take part in E.U. elections.

2015newstart · 28/03/2019 20:02

Thanks @CordeliaEarhart

Holidayshopping · 28/03/2019 20:03

Seems like it’s looking like an imminent GE plus Tory leadership elections.

BercowsSilkTie · 28/03/2019 20:03

WA to be agreed by tomorrow to enable e tension until 22nd May. If it doesn't pass then they have to come up with an alternative by 12th April.

BercowsSilkTie · 28/03/2019 20:04

Cross post sorry

Horehound · 28/03/2019 20:04

Everyone needs to calm down!

2015newstart · 28/03/2019 20:04

Thanks @Wenttoseainasieve

What a shambles. Even though No Deal would be disastrous in a way I just want it over and done with. I really thought the petition to revoke would take off more than it has.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/03/2019 20:06

I'm sick of being trolled on fb by people losing their shit at me for publishing the petition. So I've had a sweep so that my fb is a safe space. I know that an echo chamber, blah blah, but I don't need to always feel anxious when I'm relaxing.

1tisILeClerc · 28/03/2019 20:08

Which part of 'the WA is the only 'deal' you are going to get, whether you sign up for it or crash out' is the HoC struggling with?
The guardian article about the EP meeting of today, I think continuing tomorrow, makes concerning reading.
The EP is happy to tell the USA and Russia to 'do one', and I get the feeling the firmness they can muster might be applied to the UK before too long.

lonelyplanetmum · 28/03/2019 20:09

The revoke petition did take off fast dnd furious.

However the govt quite quickly put up a response to it before it was debated - on the website attached to the petition itself.. When this happens people think there's less point in signing (whereas they should, of course, keep on signing it) !

SwedishEdith · 28/03/2019 20:10

Are they people you know OYBBK? Actual friends?

OublietteBravo · 28/03/2019 20:10

Last night I had a nightmare. I turned up at the polling station and I wasn't registered to vote. The Brexit omnishambles has clearly infiltrated my subconscious.

Calamapo · 28/03/2019 20:12

I know that an echo chamber, blah blah, but I don't need to always feel anxious when I'm relaxing.

No need to keep some angry arsehole you once worked with as a Facbook friend. I'm all for echo chambers when it comes to my social life or social network.

Is it too late to join the Tory party Envy (not envy), in order to vote in their leadership election?

FedUpOfBrexit · 28/03/2019 20:15

Can someone explain please how May is getting a 3rd vote when Bercow said she couldn't unless there was significant changes?

CordeliaEarhart · 28/03/2019 20:16

She's separated the WA and PD. Previous votes were on the two combined, but this is on the WA only.

Icantreachthepretzels · 28/03/2019 20:16

Re the general election - at least in the report it says they will seek a long brexit extension and call a general election, not just dissolve parliament and crash us out.
The trouble is JC will let her do this. He shouldn't.
I don't see that a GE will bring about anything but another hung parliament ... but then maybe they are simply hoping that any new coalition govt will just sweep away the dead wood of brexit and pretend it never happened because they are not bound by it.

But going by TM's success record - the DUP and the ERG probably won't vote for an election and she'll fail even at that. They won't want to go into an election with her at the helm - but they can't replace her if they go to a snap election (or if she doesn't agree to be replaced).

lonelyplanetmum · 28/03/2019 20:17

I'll never get over the illogicality of this endless nightmare.

If something was transparently the right thing to do for the country it wouldn't be this hard.

I asked a ( Leave voting) colleague the last time a party within a party caused this much insubordinate insurrection! He referred me to the original CABAL In the 1670s.

The term "C-A-B-A-L" came from the names of the five Privy councillors (Clifford, Arlington, Buckingham, Ashley-Cooper, and Lauderdale) who ironically formed the Committee for Foreign Affairs.

The cabal were able to direct government policy both at home and abroad.

It ended when oersonal rivalries and a conflict over policy between Buckingham and Arlington escalated. The Cabal became very unpopular, characterised by arbitrary rule; the public eventually saw them as "untrustworthy, venal and self-seeking, their eyes always on the main chance".

Sound familiar?

wheresmymojo · 28/03/2019 20:17

Sorry, as always not had time to catch up today but in case no-one has posted this yet...this is the end of Peston's latest analysis...

"For what it's worth, and I pass this on not because I believe it true but because the sources are credible, there is a view in Whitehall and among some ministers that it's all about setting up a choice for the UK between a long Brexit delay and a no-deal Brexit on April 12.
And having given signals that she hates both no-deal and long delay, the PM is preparing to jump for no deal, they say.
They may be wrong, but if no-deal Brexit is really Theresa May's Plan B, the House of Commons does not - as yet - have a device to stop her."

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 28/03/2019 20:18

Is it too late to join the Tory party Envy (not envy), in order to vote in their leadership election?

You need to be a member for 3 months to vote in the leadership election. So it might be possible - depends on the timing. BTW - you can pay the £25 annual membership in monthly instalments (£2.09 a month).
