Westminstenders: Arse about Face

Everything about Brexit seems to have been done wrongly.

Setting red lines to rule out a compromise

The attempt to use executive power to trigger A50, that resulted in a court case

Triggering A50 before knowing what the UK wanted

Agreeing to the backstop before any Tory MP understood the GFA

Appointing a Brexit minister before checking he understood where Dover was.

May going on about NI and pissing off the DUP before they were just about to climb down.

Having a Meaningless Vote repeatedly with a gun to head.

Contempt of Parliament and just general fucking up.

Tonight, 3 days before we were due to leave the HoC finally sat down to decide what Brexit outcomes they thought would be a good idea - more than 2years after that should have happened.

And we now we are told the meaningful vote might be may even more meaningless by being wrapped up in the illusive Withdrawal Agreement Implimentation Bill.

Farce doesn't even cover it.

Anyway Indicative Vote results incoming in approx 15 mins.

I've seen on twitter that customs union plus single market alignment for goods is a probable bet in the long run.

I'd agree with that assessment. Services are unlikely to go SM though, and that will hit hard in the City.

Peregrina · 28/03/2019 09:46

My mum has a hard leave MP but was pleasantly surprised to get an email response from him that acknowledged they have completely different views, but which said he was glad people like her cared so much and that he would always be happy to discuss any issue with her.

Forgive my cynicism - he knows he will have to fight an election in just over three years at the latest, so is getting his excuses in first.

Littlespaces · 28/03/2019 09:47

What do we lose access to with a customs union?

RedToothBrush · 28/03/2019 09:50

Faisal Islam@faisalislam
* DUP abstained on Efta-EEA AND on Common Market 2.0...

Given they voted against other propositions including customs union - that is an invitation to talk

DUP also abstained on No Deal with one who voted against - reinforcing my top line above.

If No Deal occurs accidentally it will have to be with the explicit nod from EU Council veto, but it won’t get one from Commons.

The reason the DUP are giving for not supporting deal is

Faisal Islam@faisalislam
NEW via @skydavidblevins*

DUP leader Arlene Foster tells @SkyNews her party “regrets” that it is unable to support the Withdrawal Agreement while it “poses a threat to the integrity of the UK.” #Brexit

If the PD is changed to something close to, but not the same as the backstop, I can see a way forward with the DUP. But that might lose more ERG again.

What do we lose access to with a customs union?

Trade.

More or less!

Customs union is the queues at Dover and Red tape problem.

RedToothBrush · 28/03/2019 09:52

Does that still end FOM or would we have to accept that?

Single market alignment means not in single market. Therefore no obligation to the 4 pillars and FOM.

But 80% of our economy is services.

Isn't that madness?

icannotremember · 28/03/2019 09:53

Peregrina well yes, but he'd have to be even thicker than his voting record suggests to think even for a single second that he might get her vote!

Tanith · 28/03/2019 09:54

Anybody else noticed odd gaps on the supermarket shelves already ?

Been noticing it for a while, Talkinpaece.

The quality has taken a real nosedive, too: portion sizes have shrunk and prices have increased.

QueenOfThorns · 28/03/2019 09:56

Can I please ask a question? If we end up with a PV of WA + CU vs remain, is the CU part of it a component of the PD? Sorry, there were a lot of abbreviations in that sentence! What I’m trying to find out is, if WA + CU won a PV, could the CU part be torn up and cast aside by the headbanger who becomes the next PM?

We really need an idea of what’s going to happen soon, as big decisions need to be made about whether we’re emigrating or not - as I desperately want to stay here, I’m clinging to every bit of hope and putting off committing to the move Sad

bellinisurge · 28/03/2019 09:57

I've not really noticed it @Tanith . And I am a regular at Aldi or Tesco. And a general prepper
We still have a functioning Just in Time system. For now.

Brexit is madness yes.

CU plus single market alignment for goods also rules out us trade deal on food. But does not necessarily fully protect the NHS.

This might satisfy some tories... Seeing as they have shed loads of shares in private health care. However the cost of drugs probably would be kept lower than us levels because of single market alignment.

Just watching Victoria Derbyshire - utterly depressing with no sign of compromise or an understanding of the mess we're in from any of them. The one thing that all the MPs reacted to was the suggestion of a General Election - none of them wanted to engage in that - self interest writ large.

chocolateworshipper · 28/03/2019 10:02

My MP vote for No Deal and against everything else Angry

Thinkinghappythoughts · 28/03/2019 10:05

Just came across this article with John major warning Theresa May about the DUP 2 years ago: www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/election-2017-john-major-theresa-may-conservatives-dup-deal-violence-northern-ireland-a7787681.html

Personally I think the biggest mistake she made (broad field admittedly) was callinh that general election, losing the majority and then having to cosy up with the DUP. I swear having a hung parliament has caused most of the chaos in the HoC now.

EweSurname · 28/03/2019 10:07

Those who have MPs that voted no for everything - did they at least back the WA in previous MVs? That's the only position that would have an internal consistency, I think

LouiseCollins28 · 28/03/2019 10:09

CU + Single market alignment for goods is something extra (the = alignment bit) on top of the Ken Clarke amendment, right?

Ken Clark amendment text here, from Euronews, (other sources available Grin)

A customs union (Amendment J): Proposed by Conservative Remainer Ken Clarke. It calls for the government to negotiate "a permanent and comprehensive UK-wide customs union with the EU".
(For: 264, Against 272)

Yes. My MP faithfully backs the WA in MV's.

LouiseCollins28 · 28/03/2019 10:12

God I haven't even spelled the man's name right! Sorry Ken, sorry all (need coffee!)

pepinana · 28/03/2019 10:16

I have to say I haven't noticed anything different about the supermarkets.

1tisILeClerc · 28/03/2019 10:21

My French supermarket is doing '4 for 3' discount on those little baby lettuces.
Who the heck wants extra lettuce?
Extra chocolate bars and we would be rocking!

MarshaBradyo · 28/03/2019 10:23

Nothing seems different here

ClashCityRocker · 28/03/2019 10:24

The amount of people I'm coming across who still think we're leaving tomorrow is both worrying and slightly bemusing.
