Brexit

Everything about Brexit seems to have been done wrongly.

Setting red lines to rule out a compromise

The attempt to use executive power to trigger A50, that resulted in a court case

Triggering A50 before knowing what the UK wanted

Agreeing to the backstop before any Tory MP understood the GFA

Appointing a Brexit minister before checking he understood where Dover was.

May going on about NI and pissing off the DUP before they were just about to climb down.

Having a Meaningless Vote repeatedly with a gun to head.

Contempt of Parliament and just general fucking up.

Tonight, 3 days before we were due to leave the HoC finally sat down to decide what Brexit outcomes they thought would be a good idea - more than 2years after that should have happened.

And we now we are told the meaningful vote might be may even more meaningless by being wrapped up in the illusive Withdrawal Agreement Implimentation Bill.

Farce doesn't even cover it.

Anyway Indicative Vote results incoming in approx 15 mins.

Morning all. Red hope dc is better this morning.
So angry that my MP voted for no deal

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/03/2019 07:47

The cabinet abstained.

myfairlad · 28/03/2019 07:52

My MP voted against all options except 1 where they abstained from voting.

Is there any sense in this?

RedToothBrush · 28/03/2019 07:52

Marcus Shepheard @mshepheard
What happened with the indicative votes last night?

- No option got a majority in favour
- Lots of MPs abstained
- Options on a confirmatory referendum on the PM's or a customs union had the most support

So if the shadow cabinet and the cabinet hadn't abstained on Margaret Beckett's proposal it would have lost by a larger margin?

67chevvyimpala · 28/03/2019 07:54

So...what's next?

The most voted for go through to next stage?

I'm lost.

Trainsandsewingmachines · 28/03/2019 07:56

So essentially no one can agree on anything - which is how it’s been all the way through.
And why this whole thing should never have been started. Too many conflicts of interest and differing views to ever get a majority. It’s truly hopeless.

We are now aboard for brexit 😬 we travel back to the UK from France two days post brexit.
I don’t know whether to go or not! We will get there... will be get back?!

lonelyplanetmum · 28/03/2019 07:58

Thanks Red that's really great.

So if we want to apportion blame (which isn't always helpful) we'd be having another ref if those Labour MPs beneath the mid line voted for it?

Littlebelina · 28/03/2019 08:00

My MP (small majority, slight remain area) voted pv,revoke and customs union. Happy enough with that. Another couple of local MPs I used to respect voted no deal though Angry

TalkinPaece · 28/03/2019 08:01

Happy with my MP
Sad for the country.

I want to be able to book tickets to visit my daughter FFS

NoCryingInEngineering · 28/03/2019 08:01

My MP voted against everything except 6&7. Which is no surprise as he's a greasy pole climbing ERG wannabe who was parachuted in when his predecessor retired as this is turd in a blue rosette will win land. I'll probably vote LD in a GE as I did last time - a pointless excercise but does at least mean they can't say my vote is "for Brexit"

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/03/2019 08:03

Interesting that Jo Johnson voted no to everything except PV. He's in a leave seat too.

Clearly cut from a very different cloth to his brother.

LonelyTiredandLow · 28/03/2019 08:06

Labour and LD both need a change of leadership IMO.
Starmer would do (anyone really to oust JC!) but Jess Phillips would be much more fun Grin.
I think I remember reading on here VC didn't like the lady who is touted to be his successor - the one with the intense eyes who really annoys my leaver friend? She speaks well and clearly but does seem to rub people up the wrong way. Are there any other LD contenders?

1tisILeClerc · 28/03/2019 08:06

Some of the 'comments' to Mr Verhofstadt's tweet are truly appalling and expose the uncomfortable truth that the pragmatism, decency and a sense of 'fair play' of the 'British' is in many cases an illusion.
They also convey how uneducated some, presumably leavers are (as they are attacking Mr Verhofstadt).

Propertybrothers The whole Cabinet was supposed to abstain on these votes,
since their collective decision was that they disapprove of Parliament taking over

PestyMachtubernahme · 28/03/2019 08:08

This seems to sum up Brexit

Mark Hennessy @MarkHennessy
An entire debate on BBC Newsnight about the UK’s Brexit options - without one mention of what the EU27 will, or will not accept in the days, weeks, months ahead. It’s almost like the other side of the table doesn’t exist

Remember, this is only the Withdrawal Agreement.
The DEAL and trade arrangements come later.
It is going to take decades to sort out the mess. We (the glorious UK) will miss every single deadline.
Sometimes I understand the tack TM has taken.

Parliament are never going to admit that Brexit was always going to be difficult and require most expert negotiations. They will certainly never admit that it is wholly incompatible with GFA.

This won't be over in my lifetime.

RedToothBrush · 28/03/2019 08:09

What is frustrating is those who are just taking a view of simply what they want and with no thought of compromise.

I think it's fair enough on this first round but there is an element of cutting nose off to spite your face, particularly if the alternative facing us is no deal.

I would hope that more pragmatic realism will creep in but I'm not holding my breathe.

mother JC is a Lexiter and any Shadow Cabinet member who voted Revoke would probably be in trouble

BigChocFrenzy · 28/03/2019 08:15

On the PV, MPs will have to choose the 2 options for the public to vote on.

This would probably only happen if it defeats Ken Clarke's CU option on Monday

BEWARE:
JC may use the heavy defeat of the Revoke option to try to exclude this from a PV 😡😡

ClashCityRocker · 28/03/2019 08:16

The number of abstentions on revoke to avoid no deal makes me slightly hopeful that if we came down to revoke or no deal, revoke would comfortably win.

RedToothBrush · 28/03/2019 08:19

Pretty sure that the majority of those abstaining from the revoke v no deal vote (Inc the cabinet) would indeed revoke.
