Westminstenders: Pragmatism versus Purity

There is one question for the HoC in the next week and that's will you persue pragmatism or purity?

May looks as if she is being sidelined after a backbench withdrawal of support, the DUPs withdrawal of support and an omminous silence eminenating from the Cabinet.

Her speech on Thursday where she pitted the people against parliament has been her last mistake. She's now a danger to the country's stability and the safety of MPs.

The priority for the week is to pass the SI to change the UK exit date from 29th March to the EU's new terms.

After that, with May's deal stuffed due to lack of support and a Bercow ruling it looks like we are facing some sort of indicative free vote. This seems to be being supported by ministers in government regardless of leave or remain.

The prospect of a Tory Leader Election contest looms. It remains to seen if that can happen in the next three weeks with so much else at stake. But this is the Tory party.

The penny seems to be finally dropping about the reality of leaving the EU and how we leave the EU. A week before we were due to go. The incompetence of Parliament is laid bare in all its glorious full scale.

Hopefully the petition now outgrowing countries is being picked up worldwide. I'm sure a lot of foreign press would like to concentrate on that as a story ....

Is there a precedent ?

phpolly · 25/03/2019 14:07

lonelyplanet that is exactly what I ended up thinking about the Chequers meeting yesterday

dreichuplands · 25/03/2019 14:08

The irony is that it was a Brexit supporter who egged JC, I can think of few other politicians who have done as much to help Brexit as him.

Songsofexperience · 25/03/2019 14:09

It's already bigger than Norway (which has 5.2 m)
It's about to overtake Finland (5.5m)...

phpolly · 25/03/2019 14:12

Jeremy Corbyn is SO FUCKING USELESS (sorry for yelling - it's just hard to believe how useless he is)
Why have a "leader of the opposition" at all?
Whatever the Brexit outcome, I think the Labour Party will be rearranged nearly as decisively as the Tory Party

tobee · 25/03/2019 14:13

Perish the thought that I'd stick up for Corbyn but isn't he meeting---- TM?

LonelyTiredandLow · 25/03/2019 14:14

@dreichuplands That's what I thought, shows how much leavers keep their fingers on the pulse Sad

tobee · 25/03/2019 14:14

Rogue----

James Forsyth and Katy Balls have a useful cabinet write-up at the Spectator. Here’s an extract.
'May also appears to be moving more firmly towards ruling out no deal. One minister says that it is the ‘the first time she has said it so definitively’. This minister says that ‘it is the issue of the union seems to be what has really convinced her’ of this.'

(From The Guardian news feed)

LonelyTiredandLow · 25/03/2019 14:19

We've heard her say she's ruling out No Deal before, the HoC voted on it for what it was worth. It still doesn't change it as the default if she can't come up with something to bring people together.

Horehound · 25/03/2019 14:20

And they voted to rile out no deal...

So just shows the amendment voting was a load of shit and therefor the indicative votes are even more so.

DGRossetti · 25/03/2019 14:22

I think the Unions days are numbered. Even if A50 were to be revoked while I type this, that's another genii out of it's bottle. The past two years have been a crystal clear demonstration to Scotland and Northern Ireland of their place in the "Union", and that they'd be better off out.

Three cheers for David Cameron. At the risk of sounding cruel, it would be cosmic justice of her Madge lived through it. So much for "purring".

Wenttoseainasieve · 25/03/2019 14:22

Looks like it's the fear of breaking up the union that's motivating her, never mind the suffering no deal could unleash for people

LonelyTiredandLow · 25/03/2019 14:25

If she's only just realised that...I think it is a bow to DUP (Please vote for my deal!)? She must feel like a muppet considering how much she pays them to be on her 'side'. Or are they U-turning towards Norway or Norway +?

dreichuplands · 25/03/2019 14:25

Well the whole Brexit situation has persuaded me to give up on the Union. But I don't think it is just one way I think there is reduced support for it in England. I would be interested in seeing polling around how many English people have any interest in keeping either Scotland or NI in the UK. From talking to friends I sense English Nationalism is growing.

DGRossetti · 25/03/2019 14:25

Gods will, innit ?

Songsofexperience · 25/03/2019 14:27

TM cares about the union, yes. She's a true conservative in that respect. I don't doubt her genuine sense of loyalty there. Others in the ERG I'm sure care more about big business than the union itself. I'm convinced of that.

DGRossetti · 25/03/2019 14:27

From talking to friends I sense English Nationalism is growing.

If you've only just noticed ....

lonelyplanetmum · 25/03/2019 14:29

This minister says that ‘it is the issue of the union seems to be what has really convinced her’ of this.'

Surely the convincer is Parliament's stance? Why did she still need persuading post a Parliamentary vote!

HazardGhost · 25/03/2019 14:30

God's will can bite my ass.

And a good afternoon Brew

Tanith · 25/03/2019 14:36

Was on 3rd March he got egged - don't remember reading about it though?

The protester pressed an egg to JC's forehead. It could have been a knife.

Whatever you think of JC's politics or behaviour, it's completely unacceptable, especially with the attacks and threats on MPs recently.

Wenttoseainasieve · 25/03/2019 14:37

And apparently Hunt wanted to hold MV3 on 10th April to really pile on the pressure Confused
