Westminstenders: Pragmatism versus Purity

There is one question for the HoC in the next week and that's will you persue pragmatism or purity?

May looks as if she is being sidelined after a backbench withdrawal of support, the DUPs withdrawal of support and an omminous silence eminenating from the Cabinet.

Her speech on Thursday where she pitted the people against parliament has been her last mistake. She's now a danger to the country's stability and the safety of MPs.

The priority for the week is to pass the SI to change the UK exit date from 29th March to the EU's new terms.

After that, with May's deal stuffed due to lack of support and a Bercow ruling it looks like we are facing some sort of indicative free vote. This seems to be being supported by ministers in government regardless of leave or remain.

The prospect of a Tory Leader Election contest looms. It remains to seen if that can happen in the next three weeks with so much else at stake. But this is the Tory party.

The penny seems to be finally dropping about the reality of leaving the EU and how we leave the EU. A week before we were due to go. The incompetence of Parliament is laid bare in all its glorious full scale.

I don't think it is the only impression they have Tanith. I read the Ouest France which has a huge circulation and they have a special Brexit section. There are lots of articles that are very well informed and show the level of opposition to Brexit.
I still get interest, sympathy and understanding from everyone I talk to. I teach an adult English class and we had a discussion about it all last week; they were delighted when I taught them the phrase "up shit creek without a paddle". 😀

Good morning,
Re:Mark Field and Revoke

He is my MP. I wrote to him a couple of years comparing the treatment of EU nationals to that of Jews during the 1930's (making lists, giving them immatriculation numbers, intimidating them etc..). He wrote back and was not very happy having some of his fellow MP's being associated with 'Nazi Germany'! He added that his mother is German so he took 'great exception' to my letter😄
A few months later EU was compared to Nazi Germany etc..

I have 5 days in the office before holiday. I have so much work to do beforehand. So I need to pretend Brexit isn’t of any interest until this evening. Wish me luck!

Holidayshopping · 25/03/2019 08:58

Not exactly easy to understand, is it?!

67chevvyimpala · 25/03/2019 08:59

Its sunny.

I have housework to do.

I shall put the radio on, sing loudly and pretend for a while that everything is ok.

Violetparis · 25/03/2019 09:02

That signatory list is interesting, lots of Labour constituencies at the very top and very bottom of the list.

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/03/2019 09:15

When is the best time to be watching debates in HOC on TV today?

Hopefully not this morning, as I have to go out for a few hours.

Littlespaces · 25/03/2019 09:18

I'm hoping "twat" doesn't become Prime Minister.

Surely the Tory Party isn't that stupid?

Tanith · 25/03/2019 09:19

Thank you MissClimpson, that is a relief. I have cringed with embarrassment many times over the past few years.

You could give them some of the placards as a translation exercise! Grin

Hasenstein · 25/03/2019 09:20

It's a lovely sunny morning here, too (been up since 4.00, so saw the sun rise ).

Unfortunately, all this sunny weather means that the garden is starting to wake up and there's loads of stuff to do, but I HATE gardening. Ah well, I keep telling myself it'll do me good.

RedToothBrush · 25/03/2019 09:31

Surely the Tory Party isn't that stupid?

Have you seen much evidence in the last 5 years or so, to support the contrary?

My loathing for this man knows no bounds:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/mar/25/government-could-ignore-indicative-brexit-votes-says-liam-fox

Government could ignore indicative Brexit votes, says Liam Fox

So they'll pretend they respect the views of Parliament, then just ignore them anyway Angry

(Goes back to reading paper and ignoring sunny-weather-perfect-for-gardening)

Littlespaces · 25/03/2019 09:32

I think we caould come up with some really good phrases for MissClimpson's students. Please say sorry to them from England.

Hoist by their own petard
Absence makes the heart grow fonder
Bad news travels fast
All that glitters is not gold
Between the devil and the deep blue sea
Birds of a feather flock together
Cast pearls before swine
Crime doesn't pay
Don't put the cart before the horse

Mistigri · 25/03/2019 09:33

One of the things that ought to be a dead giveaway about Brexit being a terrible idea is the calibre of the politicians who support it.

Even if I were a leaver I think I'd be petrified of the people who want to implement it, on both sides of the house.

Littlespaces · 25/03/2019 09:34

No Red. I have not.

Despairs.

Lisette1940 · 25/03/2019 09:35

Surely the Tory Party isn't that stupid?

Little spaces you are rational but the Tories have long since discarded rationality.
Anything's possible, unfortunately.

missclimpson · 25/03/2019 09:40

My next class will start with a look at the placards. I think the "tit" one will need some preparation on my part. 😀

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 25/03/2019 09:41

Government could ignore indicative Brexit votes, says Liam Fox

So they'll pretend they respect the views of Parliament, then just ignore them anyway

Which is pretty much what Barclay said on the Marr show yesterday.

Shameful.

ContinuityError · 25/03/2019 09:41

Even if I were a leaver I think I'd be petrified of the people who want to implement it, on both sides of the house.

Unfortunately, critical thinking seems to be a dying art.

TatianaLarina · 25/03/2019 09:41

Tories gonna tory.

Good point.

Remain Tories are not your friend, but your enemy’s enemy.

TheMShip · 25/03/2019 09:42

I've seen nothing specific to a SI today?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 25/03/2019 09:46

Remain Tories are not your friend, but your enemy’s enemy.

Exactly that and nicely phrased
