Westminstenders: Pragmatism versus Purity

There is one question for the HoC in the next week and that's will you persue pragmatism or purity?

May looks as if she is being sidelined after a backbench withdrawal of support, the DUPs withdrawal of support and an omminous silence eminenating from the Cabinet.

Her speech on Thursday where she pitted the people against parliament has been her last mistake. She's now a danger to the country's stability and the safety of MPs.

The priority for the week is to pass the SI to change the UK exit date from 29th March to the EU's new terms.

After that, with May's deal stuffed due to lack of support and a Bercow ruling it looks like we are facing some sort of indicative free vote. This seems to be being supported by ministers in government regardless of leave or remain.

The prospect of a Tory Leader Election contest looms. It remains to seen if that can happen in the next three weeks with so much else at stake. But this is the Tory party.

The penny seems to be finally dropping about the reality of leaving the EU and how we leave the EU. A week before we were due to go. The incompetence of Parliament is laid bare in all its glorious full scale.

cherin yes, very much so. In which case I'll just do like I did on The Smiler: hold on, close my eyes, and breathe. I didn't enjoy that ride one bit so treated it a bit like labour and breathed my way through it.

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 24/03/2019 23:43

I'm not sure how much more of this weird dichotomy of hope and doom my brain and gut can take.

THIS!

SwedishEdith · 24/03/2019 23:47

What's fascinating about that tracker is the MPs who have tiny majorities - Zac Goldsmith (obvs) but also

Kensington
(VOTED REMAIN 68.8% (EST.)
Emma Dent Coad MP
LABOUR MAJORITY: 20

Chipping Barnet
VOTED REMAIN 58.9% (EST.)
Rt Hon Theresa Villiers MP
CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY: 353

Canterbury
VOTED REMAIN 54.7% (EST.)
Rosie Duffield MP
LABOUR MAJORITY: 187

Hastings and Rye
VOTED LEAVE 55.9% (EST.)
Rt Hon Amber Rudd MP
CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY: 346

So it's Monday. Everyone looking forward to the week ahead? SmileGrinShockHmmWinkConfusedBrewWineCakeGin

What would be helpful on the tracker is the number of people who a actually voted in a constituency.

Mines at 5%.

I'm awake. That bojo headline is...😮

LonelyTiredandLow · 25/03/2019 04:11

The rhythm of my night has also been Brexited.

Was just reading Polly Toynbee's co-written article and noticed she's channelling messages from my placards! In succession too! Perversely, Theresa May insists scores of MPs should make a U-turn – but refuses voters any right to a change of heart. (If MPs can change their minds why can't we?)

To impose any of the Brexits without consent would be the real democratic denial. (Informed consent #PutItToThePeople)

Excellent point mathWine

Depressed to find this morning that my MP is a member of the star chamber. Not a huge surprise as knew he is hardcore ERG and been going on about No Deal being Clean Global Brexit for a fair time. We were a marginal in 2015 and he got a pretty substantial majority in 2015 after our previous long serving Lib Dem MP retired seeing the writing on the wall.

I guess it shows people will vote something other than Conservative for the right candidate and I’m going to make sure that everyone knows about his recent record at the next election.

Wait4nothing · 25/03/2019 07:03

Icantreachthepretzels
I’m in a similar position - my no deal brexiter Labour MP (who did reply to my last email - very angrily and quite rudely) has a small majority and the petition signatures are very much catching up to it.
I know it’s not all the voting people but I think his position is very uncertain going forward 👍

Has Boris forgotten the next part of that Bible story??? They spent 40 years in the wilderness!! Angry

GroovieGazelloo · 25/03/2019 07:14

To All of you here who have made such big efforts recently opposing Brexit, I renew my thanks. I can hear that some are feeling tired and even down.
Look at what you've done already ! Be proud of yourselves and keep taking extra care of yourselves. BearBrewThanks

This morning the petition is 5,342,576. Grin.

And, before I set off for work, sending a special upper piccy...

Morning.

I need coffee and a slice of Revoke Article.50 for breafast Grin

PestyMachtubernahme · 25/03/2019 07:56

Molly Scott Cato (MEP) has a few suggestions

How we would deal with this in European Parliament:

👉Accept amendments from all MEPs;
👉Negotiate across parties to find compromises;
👉Vote on all ams not included in compromises starting with those furthest from original proposal;
👉Accept outcome of these votes

But this is the UK and FPTP does not generally allow for this sort of democracy. Looking forward to another day of ineffectual lunacy from the government.

Tanith · 25/03/2019 08:04

Since they're invoking Jewish history for their own political ends, I hope that BJ's haircut will have the same effect it did on Samson.

RedToothBrush · 25/03/2019 08:07

Good morning! What a beautiful bright and sunny spring day.

Just a shame about the lunatics who seem intent on spoiling it.

The thing about Johnson is he wants you to talk about him. That's what Bannon does - pick something that will cause a fuss on social media and set the agenda for the day.

So I am going to refrain from mentioning him further today (unless there is a relevant need to) and not play that game. He had his 5 mins last night when the Telegraph was published.

I will be focusing on important developments in the HoC instead.

I hope some of you will join me in this resolution for the day.

Hopefully Field will be the first of many. It only takes one person to speak up before others follow suit

On Saturday we marched with a friend of a friend who is very close to another minister who she described as being ‘at their wit’s end and desperate to revoke’.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 25/03/2019 08:10

Boris who? Wink

Tanith · 25/03/2019 08:15

I'd really like to know how the weekend's events (March and petition, I mean) have affected opinion in the EU countries.

I know other EU countries have their own affairs to deal with, but it's irked me to think that the only impression they've had of us is the Government's outrageous behaviour over the past few years.

woman19 · 25/03/2019 08:20
