I promise I won’t ask you anymore questions or it turn into a slanging match, you are untitled to your opinion.
I don’t know anyone of my friends who voted leave, the odd acquaintance who voted leave “because they didn’t really understand” but the people I am friendly with all seem to be remianers. We are in our 30s and to teaching, sales and banking type jobs. Dh is a solicitor and all do law in one form.
I was wondering if certain sectors voted leave generally and if what you did for a living influenced your leave vote, and if you could possibly explain why the leave vote would benefit your sector. I am not here to judge at all just trying to understand

frazzled absolutely. To remove yourself from the one negotiating platform you have is madness. It’s exactly what the UK did to Iceland and their position was massively weakened by them not being in the EU. I don’t know how much the issue has actually been raised by the UK but as far as fishermen are concerned they just feel they’re being ignored.

It wouldn’t take a lot for someone to have actually spoken to fishermen about their concerns and reassured them that their problems were being taken seriously and there was a chance of some kind of outcome. But to just completely ignore the problems of entire industries does result in those people then saying ‘fuck you’ and thinking they could do a better job themselves.

I’m a cleaner, for a company based in Denmark.
I’m feeling quite stupid about my choice now and wish I’d not bothered voting at all Confused

Shookethtothecore · 23/03/2019 10:04

Thank you,
I feel like this is what we need now, it is what it is and there will be winners and losers on both sides. We need understanding and discussion and I’m disgusted that the powers in parliament can’t seem to manage this. Maybe my heads in the clouds, but discussion and understanding and compromise is the only way now, from all sides

I have never been told by anybody they voted leave. Everybody I know either says (loudly) they voted remain or don't talk about politics or Brexit at all.

The vocal ones I know are mostly teachers, ex teachers or retired teachers.

I know a lot of people who are very political (left wing), and a lot who also have never voted and claim to be apolitical (usually while complaining about their zero hours contract, universal credit replacing tax credits, issues with schools/healthcare/other public services and the lack of social housing/property ownership being out of reach for them). I know anecdotally that a lot of my female friends who are "apolitical" have partners or ex partners who voted leave, though. So often the only vote in their household was to leave.

Megan you seem to know a lot, where are you based and do you think geographically this has had an impact on people’s vote generally?

I voted leave.

I'm a grandchild of immigrants and in a mixed relationship and have mixed race dc. I live in London and prefer to live in a multi cultural area...my friends include immigrants from many parts of the world.

However, I voted leave for the following reasons..

  1. I don't believe freedom of movement works between countries who have vastly different economies. The movement is too one sided.
  1. I was very concerned about the countries who may potentially join in the future...not necessarily Turkey, but others such as Albania, Moldova etc. They are economically very poor compared to the UK. I can see many benefits for those countries to join but can't see how it would benefit the UK.
  1. As a mixed race family, the only racism I have experienced has been not from white British people but from European migrants sadly.

I was very much on the fence and veered between voting leave and remain many times.

@Shook
Home counties, work in London.

SweetbutaPsycho · 23/03/2019 10:54

Ironically the one leave voter I know works in my old role as a community development worker... The project is funded by the European social fund Hmm

twoheaped · 23/03/2019 10:57

I live in the North West:
Financial adviser
Teacher's - many
Supermarket manager
Company owner - 3, 2 local businesses, 1 international
Mental health nurse
Hospital nurse
Farmer - loads (I go to the auctions)

I know more leavers than remainers.

Millyonthe · 23/03/2019 11:05

Me: business owner
Friends and family who voted Leave:
Primary school teacher
News editor
Retired engineer
CEO of FTSE 100 company
Unemployed
Chairman of bank
Management consultant
E-bay seller
Lawyer
Headhunter
Retired teacher
SAHP
Student
Builder
Various business owners

All voted Leave because they thought the UK would be better off outside the EU. I don't think anyone has changed their minds.

Clueing4looks · 23/03/2019 11:15

I work in a university. In our department (social sciences) 7 voted leave, 1 remain and 2 didn’t vote.

Laniakea · 23/03/2019 11:20

Pretty much everyone I know voted remain (with the exception of BIL who is an "intelligent" STEM graduate who also happens to be extremely right wing, scarily so) but DH told me recently that a surprising number of his colleagues voted leave. These are senior IT people in a company which has a number of (huge) European clients. In their case this

"Leavers:
First and second generation immigrant Tory voters (Asian)

Reason:
Don't feel as if the UK should extend the benefits and freedom of opportunity that they enjoyed due to these newcomers not being "desirable"immigrants. "

describes them perfectly - intelligent, hardworking, decent people who are also very conservative & voted leave because of the perceived unfairness of EU migrants getting an easier time than they & their parents did.

EggysMom · 23/03/2019 11:21

I work for a government organisation (not quite civil service). My team, all of whom do the same IT-based job, are a mix of Leavers and Remainers. So job role has no bearing on how we voted in my team.

AlphaJura · 23/03/2019 11:24

I know a couple of leave voters who are retired.
3 were on sick benefits
One is a gardener/cleaner
DP voted leave, he's a builder
There is someone near me who has a 'vote no deal' banner outside their property and it looks like they're a stone mason.

Shookethtothecore · 23/03/2019 11:28

The tradespeople argument I thought was a valid one, I don’t understand it, but are immigrants undercutting them on work? So polish builders ect? Does this mean they will work for the same money? Or do they think there is just too many so less immigration will give them more opportunity to get work? Again, not goady just trying to understand

I know a farmer who voted leave which baffles me. I happen to know that he relies almost entirely on EU subsidies but his blithe confidence that the British government would match or better these was unsuppressable.

derxa · 23/03/2019 11:34

Of course what op is trying to find out from middle class Mumsnetters is how lowly and uneducated leave voters might be. I think that's it.
I think it reflects the English class system/so called intelligentsia to be honest. Another way of dividing us and them. I'm a remainer but this attitude makes me grind my teeth. Endless snobbery.

SimonJT · 23/03/2019 11:36

The only person I know who voted leave is retired and lives in Spain over winter, they’re now worrying as they have very poor health and couldn’t afford insurance to cover their health conditions.

Gronky · 23/03/2019 11:40

The project is funded by the European social fund Hmm

I know a farmer who voted leave which baffles me.

Are you surprised that some people aren't motivated entirely by short term financial gain and instead vote based upon a wider range of priorities? I'm sorry if the question sounds a little loaded or hostile, I couldn't think of a less direct way to phrase it.

Shookethtothecore · 23/03/2019 11:43

I don’t get the class argument as I would consider everyone of my friends middle class as the class is so big, dh earns about 100k and I’m a SAHP. We are deffo middle class and live a normal middle class life comfortably. My friends who are teachers or work in the bank for example have husbands who do similar jobs and I would consider them middle class, all be at with slightly less spare cash, but still middle class. The class in the uk has changed so much it’s not as black and white anymore. The wealthy and incredibly weathly and the poor very poor. Their job doesn’t necessarily equate to the standard of living

Shookethtothecore · 23/03/2019 11:45

gronky I get what you mean and it’s a good question

SweetbutaPsycho · 23/03/2019 12:57

Gronky
In all honesty yes I was quite surprised as was my colleagues given the fact the majority of our funding comes from the European social fund so the person's vote has ultimately made them redundant! The project is now in its last year due to lack of funding.

SweetbutaPsycho · 23/03/2019 12:59

Also, given the work we done it was clear to see he advantages of the European union. I understand voting to leave if it is beneficial to your life but it's actually detrimental to my service.
