I promise I won’t ask you anymore questions or it turn into a slanging match, you are untitled to your opinion.
I don’t know anyone of my friends who voted leave, the odd acquaintance who voted leave “because they didn’t really understand” but the people I am friendly with all seem to be remianers. We are in our 30s and to teaching, sales and banking type jobs. Dh is a solicitor and all do law in one form.
I was wondering if certain sectors voted leave generally and if what you did for a living influenced your leave vote, and if you could possibly explain why the leave vote would benefit your sector. I am not here to judge at all just trying to understand

Leavers:
Frontline NHS workers

Reason:
Disgusted with the level of rudeness and entitlement of those who abuse the NHS from overseas.

Leavers:
First and second generation immigrant Tory voters (Asian and East European)

Reason:
Don't feel as if the UK should extend the benefits and freedom of opportunity that they enjoyed due to these newcomers not being "desirable"immigrants.

Leavers:

Retired wealthy ( final salary pensioners) regular cruise goers living in Cornwall ( massive leave cohort despite benefiting the most from EU ££ and having the least number of immigration!)

Reason:

And I quote "we are scared of the hordes of Muslim misogynistic rapists and terrorists coming here with their anti feminist views"

Remain:
British Scientists living abroad
Young people

Reason:
Economic opportunity, forward thinking, anti Trump and all his ilk, see immigration as a positive, makes for a vibrant, diverse and interesting society to live and work in.

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/03/2019 07:37

I know quite a few nhs workers who voted to leave, degree educated nurses. They were/are worried about the under funding of the nhs and believed the thing on the bus about an extra 30 million for the nhs.

DrPimplePopper · 23/03/2019 07:42

The only 2 Leavers I know are a couple, both teachers. Their reasons were ridiculous though as far as I can see - something to do with that both their schools have recently accepted 'gypsies from abroad' (wtf?) without getting any extra funding or provision for the children. And while I know they're entitled to their opinion it's changed my friendship with them both. The majority of teachers I know are Remain.

GMtoBe · 23/03/2019 07:44

The leave voters that I am aware of are retired, an electrician, a nurse, a teacher, a postman, a PA.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 23/03/2019 07:45

I voted remain but DH votes leave. He is an operations director of a very large transport company.

Fiends DB voted leave, he is a qualified financial advisor.

Bluntness100 · 23/03/2019 07:45

I know three people who voted leave.

One office worker, she has now signed the petition to revoke article fifty
One police officer who stands by his decision
One labourer, I was having work done and the young lad was the only one who had voted leave from thr guys here. His explanation was "I thought that was what everyone was doing" he had no other reason for it.

I don't know anyone else, but it could be they are not admitting it.

Joebloggswazere · 23/03/2019 07:48

Leave voters I know:
3x teachers
1x tax office
1x sahp
1x owns own cleaning business

LonelyTiredandLow · 23/03/2019 07:51

I have to say not a single leaver on my list has actually come up with a positive of Brexit. Teacher gets very het up about Nazi's and EU army and uses very emotive language which goes around in circles. She also thinks people who can't afford children should be sterilised though, so I'd say authoritarianism is the key point here.

Shookethtothecore · 23/03/2019 07:55

famousfour that was my remain vote, not because I love the European dream and totally for the EU but because there was no alternative plan on the table just an idea and at the time no one could tell me how we would leave (and obviously now the shambles that ensued) so I wasn’t particularly pro Europe, just happy with the status quo.

Leavers I know:

Financial advisors - lots
Retired engineer X 4
Retired nurse X 2

All do not want to be dictated to by Brussels and feel lied to when initially joining the EU in the 70's

Luglio · 23/03/2019 08:08

I only know one leaver. He's a retired farmer who 'doesn't want foreigners telling us what to do.'

PizzaCafe2016 · 23/03/2019 08:11

Leave voters I know are:

Parents who have been retired 20 years and fed up with immigration
Aunts and Uncles who are also retired and fed up with immigration
Myself expat for many years
Two Scots expats who come from fishing community
3 NI expats who think EU control denies them cheaper goods and services
JRM (was at Eton same time as myself)

Leavers I know are:

London bankers who admit they are fed up of immigration, but more worried about banks moving away from London.
2 Expats for ROI who are worried about a hard border
3 Scots from Edinburgh who admit they don’t experience the immigration issue in the same way as England.

n0ne · 23/03/2019 08:18

The one person I know for definite voted leave is an accountant

"appears to have debunked the myth that Leave voters are are uneducated."

That tendency isn't debunked at all. All leave voters weren't one type of person so of course some and maybe many are highly educated. But as a group, they were less educated than (as a group) Remain voters were.

Splits on age & race, too.

Values difference highlighted by Fabian Society.

Present support or opposition to Brexit since analysed by many methods, including panel survey, as reported in New Scientist. Support for authoritarianism is a consistent predictor, but also Leavers are more likely to embrace negative thinking & rigid thinking; & tend to be less numerate.

Out of interest, if you voted leave what do you do for a living?
PizzaCafe2016 · 23/03/2019 08:30

But as a group, they were less educated than (as a group) Remain voters were

Irrelevant as everyone over voting age is entitled to vote how they choose. There are no pre qualifications about; age, education, parental background, etc.

MrsPworkingmummy · 23/03/2019 08:33

I work in Education in a leadership position. Others I know who voted leave are: Engineers, CEO of an engineering firm, a surveyor, a project manager and a yoga teacher.

snookerloopynutsarewe · 23/03/2019 08:42

The leavers I know are either retired and in their 70's and 80's and read the daily mail, working in skilled trades where work has become increasingly scarce and read the sun or older and haven't been at work for a good few years as their husband earns on their behalf and so they seem quite isolated.

MeowthThatsRight · 23/03/2019 08:47

I live in a fishing town and the entire fishing community voted leave. This is because certain sustainability restrictions are placed on British fishing boats - certain types of dredging aren’t allowed. These restrictions are placed on the uk boats no matter where in EU waters they are fishing. But then Belgian and Dutch boats can use these techniques in British waters - this destroys entire areas of seabed and the fish don’t return.

I voted remain but for fishermen I can certainly see why they’d want to leave.

Frazzled2207 · 23/03/2019 09:30

@MeowthThatsRight I completely get the argument of the fishing industries. They have every right to want out.
That kind of policy is just wrong BUT surely there is a better chance of fixing Europe-wide fishing policies if we are in rather than out of the EU.

PutYourBackIntoit · 23/03/2019 09:44

Thankyou for this thread OP, it's one of the most friendly Bexit threads since before the refurendum (I remember the threads then were so balanced, interestingly).

The fishing issue that has come up interests me because if what Moweth is saying is true then I totally understand why fishermen would be upset with the EU. However, I have also heard that it's Westminsters fault for selling the rights to just 2 large fishing corporations.

For me, the fact that it's so difficult to ascertain where the accountability falls in certain situations, is the biggest problem with being a (half hearted) part of it. If we leave and we only have Westminister to hold accountable, we all gain more political empowerment. We will know with certainty who to write to, where to protest! Some people would say that that is not worth the economic storm, others think it is.

I think it's interesting that so many accountants are listed as leavers here. Accountability is the core of everything they do. I think it is in fact a desire for accountability that threads leavers together.

hanahsaunt · 23/03/2019 09:45

The farmers around here all voted leave. The common theme from the other leave voters with whom I am acquainted is that they are deeply conservative evangelicals who genuinely see Europe as the work of the devil. They adore Trump and are very pro Israel. They see all of this as a heralding of the end times and will do anything that speeds up God.

I voted remain.

itssquidstella · 23/03/2019 09:48

People I know:

Housewife
Radiographer
Accounts manager at a big car dealership

Ciwirocks · 23/03/2019 09:49

I live in a remain area and voted to remain myself. The only person I know who voted leave is retired
