I promise I won’t ask you anymore questions or it turn into a slanging match, you are untitled to your opinion.
I don’t know anyone of my friends who voted leave, the odd acquaintance who voted leave “because they didn’t really understand” but the people I am friendly with all seem to be remianers. We are in our 30s and to teaching, sales and banking type jobs. Dh is a solicitor and all do law in one form.
I was wondering if certain sectors voted leave generally and if what you did for a living influenced your leave vote, and if you could possibly explain why the leave vote would benefit your sector. I am not here to judge at all just trying to understand

copper I’m assuming they are all high earners? The ones in their 30s and 40s traditional conservative voters? I am obviously making conclusions here. But I do not have a university education and dh does, dh is a very high earner and so are most of his friends and I do find our life experience is so different, they are conservative voters and I am a labour voter as I have lived on the poverty line and they havnt so I was wondering if the traditional labour/con split correlated to the leave/ remain voter a bit. Obviously I think both sides are making a hash of it but that’s by the by, at the point of the vote I wonder if it played a part

Not in my circle of friends. But 3 people my husband and I known voted Leave for was

  • software developer in Banking - very loud Vote Leaver even it will affect his company directly, voted for "democracy" (got sacked recently Grin as far as my husband knows).
  • Finance related contractor - who spent most of his time in South Africa - voted leave because he fully believe we are better off without EU. (probably move back to SA now [consufed] )
  • about to retire customer service man - voted Leave because he wants less European - his flat investment for retirement - South East - dropped in value so good for him I guess. Shock

Shook, as far as I know, all but one are conservative voters. They may all be, I am guessing about the one. I know most of the others are party members.

ArtichokeAardvark · 22/03/2019 19:40

Headhunter
Banker
HR Manager
Charity CEO
Barrister

All degree educated and in well paying jobs. Live in London area.

It’s staggering that people were so missinformed on both sides of the argument. It was an aweful campaign on both sides for something to important. It’s staggaring and makes me so mad so much bullshit was allowed to go on really, from lo involved

My 94 year old Nan has admitted that SHE thinks that for the economy etc and the future leave is probably not the best thing for stability and that actually being part of it could make change from the inside.

BUT she hates the EU still thinks of the war and can never bring herself to vote anything other than leave

Coppersulphate · 22/03/2019 19:41

And yes, all high earners, some of whom will be affected by Brexit, but still are anxious for it to happen.

AdoraBell · 22/03/2019 19:41

DH - Insurance
FIL - retired conveyance solicter
Late MIL - worked in various jobs until about 30 years ago

Shookethtothecore · 22/03/2019 19:42

copper that’s very interesting, that they go so far as be party members aswell. The belief system in a certain political way of thinking is strong and that side of the argument lead itself to leave imo

From what I've heard second hand from social media there was a lot of Nissan workers who voted leave. Apparently they were even shown a video at work explaining how voting remain would be in their best interests. #mindboggles

happyhillock · 22/03/2019 19:43

I work in health care (Not NHS) i voted leave..

bobiana · 22/03/2019 19:44

but still are anxious for it to happen.

Are you certain about that?

I get the distinct feeling from my parents that, if there were another referendum, they’d scream and shout to save face a bit, but hen quietly put their cross in the remain box.

Seniorschoolmum · 22/03/2019 19:44

I know

Finance director x 2
Artist
Customer services exec
Ex-school teacher
Tech support manager

MakeLemonade · 22/03/2019 19:44

Leave voters I know:

Retired x6
Lobbyist x2
Insurance x1 (profession has nothing to do with it though, he’s a self-confessed racist xenophobe)

Shookethtothecore · 22/03/2019 19:45

We will probably end up abroad, dh’s Office in central London where he works has basically told us as much. That was his main reason for voting remain, he knew his company would then see it as the green light to move them somewhere cheaper. Interestingly the firm pushed for leave. How they have valid reason to uproot

The most predictive factor for Leave vs. Remain voters that I know, is university degrees. People (I know) who went to Uni or work for a Uni overwhelmingly voted Remain. Those who didn't go to Uni mostly voted Leave.

Argeles · 22/03/2019 19:47

The people who I know who voted leave are:

2 Teachers
1 Production Company Manager
1 Office Worker
1 Bar Manager
1 Bank Worker
1 Cleaner
A retired Teacher
A retired Mechanic
A retired Photographer
A retired Receptionist

The reasons all the above gave are:

They hate the EU and wished we’d never joined, and they want ‘control’ over their country.

Around 3/4 of the above people cite immigration as the main, or second reason for voting leave, and regularly talk about the need to see ‘lots of foreigners going back home,’ and ‘English people back doing their jobs instead.’

All of the above have been very angry about those issues for many years, and the excitement they’re expressing now with Brexit looming is very hard to listen to. So too are their bouts of anger when any remainers try to explain to them why they’re angry or sad, or ask them how they think Brexit will genuinely benefit the country. None of the arguments seem to make sense to me, and their defence is usually just, ‘hurry up and get us out of it,’ or ‘at least we’ll be in Control again.’

CalamityJune · 22/03/2019 19:47

Mental health worker
Engineer
Retired

Shookethtothecore · 22/03/2019 19:47

thatwouldbe I guess there was lots of reasons for people to vote how they did, I was wondering how many voted for stability or succeeds in their line of work vs other reasons for voting (keeping Europeans out ect)

Head teacher. Labour voter.

SheRaTheAllPowerful · 22/03/2019 19:51

Am London based so myself and Vast majority of friends remain voters. My husband European and unable to vote despite owning his own business, paying a shitload of tax and employing lots of local people.
Only 2 parents at school admitted to voting leave Lawyer husband, GP wife both on immigration issues hilarious considering both sets of their parents came here from India.
My parents voted leave they read too many crap newspapers and read all the tripe, both retired.
