Perhaps the WhatsApp message is bringing in audience for the petition.

Kids signing is why nobody trusts the petition

Kids signing is why nobody trusts the petition

BlackeyedGruesome · 02/04/2019 12:26

Why would it be acceptable to revoke Article 50?
The British people voted to Leave, the politicians have a clear mandate to follow through with the will of the people and leave the oppressive EU!
The HOC voted to trigger Article 50, but they are now going back on their promise.

Kids signing is why nobody trusts the petition

It's a petition, not a vote. It's not supposed to be an accurate count of the number of eligible voters who want to revoke Article 50. It's simply indicative of people's feelings.

The question is less to do with how many signatures are from non-eligible voters, and more to do with why remainers feel so strongly about signing a petition that they have either done so in their millions or gone to the effort of signing multiple times. And why is it that leaver petitions do not attract the same strong feelings?

MayhemNowCertain · 03/04/2019 01:13

You have already answered that yourself with;

It's a petition, not a vote

DontMakeMeShushYou · 03/04/2019 09:53

Mayhem

No, I haven't. That's not the answer. Why do you think it is? That only explains why the number of signatures on a petition is lower than the number of votes in an election or referendum. It doesn't explain the difference between remain petitions and leave petitions which was what I was asking.

MayhemNowCertain · 03/04/2019 10:56

To ShushYou

Maybe those who voted leave are more aware than those who voted remain that petitions mean nothing? The option to revoke received the least number of votes.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 03/04/2019 11:23

Mayhem

That could be true. It's certainly one possible answer (although if that's the case, there are several leavers who seem pretty unsettled by it). But, yes, that's what I'm getting at - why is there such a difference?

My personal suggestion is that leave is currently the default position and people tend to sign petitions because they want to change something. Leave doesn't represent a change to the course of action which is why leavers aren't signing petitions in great numbers.

Windowsareforcheaters · 03/04/2019 19:33

Maybe those who voted leave are more aware than those who voted remain that petitions mean nothing?

One of the issue we hear from leavers is that their voices have gone unheard and that no one listens to them. In a democracy we need to interact with our politicians and not just at election time.

A petition should not automatically become government policy but they demonstrate a strength of public feeling. A petition should not result in a sudden policy change but they should influence decisions and be listened to respectfully.

If we all just dismiss views we do not agree with out of hand and say those views "mean nothing" then the disillusionment and disengagement will only increase.

We need to listen and pay attention to each other.
