I needed a bucket but I'm less obsessive today.

Apileofballyhoo · 26/03/2019 17:21

Isle of Wight
VOTED LEAVE 61.9%

Mr Bob Seely
CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY: 21,069

9,665 13 PER HR

8.7% of 110,683

6.9% of the population

I'm fascinated by this. High leave vote but they are signing the petition nicely.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 26/03/2019 17:24

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if some Leavers did vote revoke - its going towards a very soft Brexit which is not popular with No Dealers, out-means-out voters.

The Brexiteers are keen to get pro-Leave MPs elected at the next GE on a promise.

Wheresthebeach · 26/03/2019 17:39

Looks like Brexiteers getting behind May as they are terrified of another referendum. Damn and Hell I'd hoped we'd get out of this mess.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 26/03/2019 17:44

Sorry I wasn't clear - I meant the voters, not MPs. I'm following a couple of groups on twitter.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/03/2019 17:52

It’s going to be debated by MPs on the 1st April.
Hope it’s not in that little room with a handful of MPs but in the main commons chamber

^It remains the Government’s firm policy not to revoke Article 50. We will honour the outcome of the 2016 referendum and work to deliver an exit which benefits everyone, whether they voted to Leave or to Remain.
Revoking Article 50, and thereby remaining in the European Union, would undermine both our democracy and the trust that millions of voters have placed in Government.
The Government acknowledges the considerable number of people who have signed this petition. However, close to three quarters of the electorate took part in the 2016 referendum, trusting that the result would be respected. This Government wrote to every household prior to the referendum, promising that the outcome of the referendum would be implemented. 17.4 million people then voted to leave the European Union, providing the biggest democratic mandate for any course of action ever directed at UK Government.
British people cast their votes once again in the 2017 General Election where over 80% of those who voted, voted for parties, including the Opposition, who committed in their manifestos to upholding the result of the referendum.
This Government stands by this commitment.
Revoking Article 50 would break the promises made by Government to the British people, disrespect the clear instruction from a democratic vote, and in turn, reduce confidence in our democracy. As the Prime Minister has said, failing to deliver Brexit would cause “potentially irreparable damage to public trust”, and it is imperative that people can trust their Government to respect their votes and deliver the best outcome for them.^

The Govt response to the petition - as if trust had not been eroded by the shambles that was passed off as a deal negotiation.

For some reason my italics failed

Wheresthebeach · 26/03/2019 18:26

Honestly the despair I feel at reading that....

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/03/2019 18:32

I think the trust was lost when they lied about the £350 whatever on the side of the bus.

what about when they said trade deals would be easy and they would all be ready to go for when we leave.

that we would be able to get a good deal really easily?

Apileofballyhoo · 26/03/2019 19:35

The thing about taking the GE as another indicator of the will of the people drives me mad.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/03/2019 19:48

Yes, in an electoral system which really only allows for two party politics, and both the main parties were in favour of pushing through Brexit.

TBH, I don't think they can just revoke article 50 without a way to clearly vote on it versus the other realistic options.

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/03/2019 20:14

Just passed 5,777,777. Very satisfying.

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/03/2019 20:16

Also agree with the GE voting for parties that support Brexit, well in a mainly two party system there was not a lot of bloody choice.

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/03/2019 20:22

Realistically there is usually one party that is likely to win and one main challenger with a couple of smaller parties that are way off winning.if both the main parties in the area wanted Brexit there was not a lot of choice that would realistically get a chance of getting elected. I looked into our area. Labour seat, nearest challenger, Conservatives. If they were quite close in numbers, would you risk voting for a minor party and then get saddled with a party you hate? ( Either way round)

Unescorted · 26/03/2019 20:36

Also - my Labour MP who I voted for is very firmly pro remain and campaigned as such. So the figures quoted are wrong because not all MPs toed the party line at the GE. We had 2 candidates (and a far right Knobber who struggles to tie his own shoe laces). I had to vote for one who's party line was not anti Brexit.

Apileofballyhoo · 26/03/2019 21:21

It's just more fact twisting, a forté of TM.

NigellasGuest · 26/03/2019 21:25

Oh I just got the email saying the government will not revoke article 50. How can they say that before it's been debated?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/03/2019 21:29

Yes I just got it.
My first thought was“c**ts”

How can they possibly say they will not revoke Article 50 when it hasn’t even been debated? Democracy means we’re supposed to be heard.

I am so angry.

NigellasGuest · 26/03/2019 21:38

It's put me on a downer just before bed, I must say

SandunesAndRainclouds · 26/03/2019 22:08

Sad times.

tinstar · 26/03/2019 22:15

Same here. Such intransigence. And what does the 2017 election have to do with it? Are they suggesting that if we didn't want Brexit we shouldn't have voted in a General Election because the main parties had promised to uphold the referendum results? Hmm

Stroller15 · 26/03/2019 22:19

I am so angry after receiving that update. Not even discussing it?? Geezo.
