Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

Delaying Buying A House Until After Brexit? These 3 Couples Know How You Feel
"Our life is on hold. Everything is wait-and-see."

These three couples can do one!!!

Hey anyone want to interview. Looking like exchanging contracts next week is realistic. DH and I are panicking and probably spending the weekend getting storage because in 3 weeks time who knows where we are at and how easy something like hiring a van with petrol in is going to be. I havent slept for visions of strapping the sofa to the roof of the car and ending up with all our stuff on the street only to lose the house cos DHs company goes under (v unlikely but still).

These three couples don't know their born. I would like some sleep sometime this century and one bed between the three of us is trying to say the least.

We have that rare thing - a buyer. If everything goes tits up, who knows when we might get one and how long that means we'd be stuck here.

I would be there too if I wasn't so far away. If there is a spontaneous uprising in Glasgow I'll be there like a shot.

Well done, that man!

GroovieGazelloo · 21/03/2019 08:21

Great news Element.

And to anyone doubting in the power of people to change things, I remember thinking that the poll tax would never be stopped.

It was.

Hopelesscase28 and any others for whom travel costs are a barrier to joining the march - have you looked at Get Me To The March in case that can help you?

LittlePickleHead · 21/03/2019 08:27

@RedToothBrush I know how you feel! We've just exchanged and I'm terrified! But we had to move and had been waiting for so long for it to happen - to pull out for fear of the unknown would have been such a hard decision to make.

I'm so worried we have made a mistake though

TatianaLarina · 21/03/2019 08:32

If you remember the petition just after the referendum, calling for a second referendum - that climbed similarly quickly and hit 4 million eventually. But the government ignored it. This petition is interesting, it don’t mean shit.

ComputerSaysMo · 21/03/2019 08:32

We’re marching on Saturday: me, DH (who has spent most of the past 2 years assuring me that things would work out, and is now furious at the way things have actually gone), our 3 children, and a card-carrying Tory party friend & his family who’ve never attended a march before.

I’ve always been on the opposite side of the political spectrum to this friend of DH’s. What an oddly unifying force May’s speech has turned out to be.

prettybird · 21/03/2019 08:33

I've just see a strong anti-independence former work colleague say on a friend's FB thread which was warning that in 7 working days the legal position is that we fall out of the EU, that on Working Day 8 Scotland should go for Indyref2 as it then becomes the less risky option. Shock

He's a former FD and has always taken a very financial and conservative (small "c" Wink) approach to Scottish Independence and hadn't thought Scotland was ready last time around.

Signed, shared and matching on Saturday #makeitstop

GroovieGazelloo · 21/03/2019 08:36

RedToothBrush. Fingers crossed here for your house move.

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 08:37

I signed the petition 10mins ago and still haven't received confirmation email 😐

JustAnotherPoster00 · 21/03/2019 08:38

its currently at 582

JustAnotherPoster00 · 21/03/2019 08:39

582K sorry lol

prettybird · 21/03/2019 08:40

Hepzibah - the email will come though: it just shows how overloaded their servers are that the emails are taking time to come through.

Iamsodoingthis · 21/03/2019 08:41

Hepzibah, my confirmation email went to spam email box. Check there.

OublietteBravo · 21/03/2019 08:44

I can’t believe how fast these threads are filling up. I can’t keep up.

prettybird · 21/03/2019 08:45

LonelyTiredAndLow - re the Newsround report, it helps but doesn't excuse if you think of it as The State Broadcaster Newsround. Angry

In your head, always replace the word "BBC" with "State broadcaster". Unfortunately, we also need to teach our children this Sad

No, as always context is everything. The petition 3 years ago was viewed as a knee jerk reaction by remainers and the consensus was that we'd give brexit a go. We are in a very different place today. However I agree it would be better if even more people signed this one.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/03/2019 08:59

In among the fear and anger, I also have a lot of pride for all of you who are able to come along on Saturday despite many obstacles for you. Well done for taking action.

For those who want to but can't, we march on your behalf too. If it's finances do try the GetMeTotheMarch group, it's there for you.

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 08:59

I’ve always been on the opposite side of the political spectrum to this friend of DH’s.

Yup DH and I are now marching with my friend's friends who are raging Tories. I've previously given them a slightly wide berth!

pepinana · 21/03/2019 09:02

I'm going to try to come. Will take a valium and stay round the edges.

Not going to bring my toddler though.

pepinana · 21/03/2019 09:02

The petitions website is down for maintenance. That's convenient.
