Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

Not sure if this has already been asked but who would have written May's speech last night? Who's advising her? Who said to her " great. Go ahead with that!"?

NoWordForFluffy · 21/03/2019 19:58

I don't think there are many people she hasn't pissed off across the entire continent.

Interesting re another statement. Hasn't she learned her lesson from last night?!

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 19:59

I think we have to remember the EU are (largely) liberal democracies and that principle is central to their combined future.

The UK is currently displaying signs that it's about to go full on authoritarian.

Regardless of how much May and the UK have pissed them off, this tenant of EU guiding principles remains.

I suspect they will give every opportunity they can to parliament, the opposition and the tory Party at this point to help us get out of the mess. Whether we will take those opportunities is another matter.

It's worth at least trying for their own political benefit if they can.

The consequences of not trying are... Well best not to let your brain think about that.

I've seen it said today, that after last night, maybe we need to reassess Nick Timothy. Maybe he wasn't the crazy one. Maybe it was her. And he refined it a bit and toned it down. Gavin Barwell is now her advisor. He actually seems like a fairly nice chap. And maybe that's the issue. I can't see him standing up to May if she's gone full on dictator. Nick Timothy strikes me as a much stronger character.

It's pitiful that we need rescuing from ourselves. How far the mighty have fallen.

I hope Cameron is fucking happy with himself right now (I doubt he cares).

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2019 20:07

May's speech annoyed us
Now imagine having to sit through 90 minutes of being hectored by her

icannotremember · 21/03/2019 20:07

I think a very different speech was written for her. The delay was her refusing to give it and drafting the petulant, spiteful drivel we heard instead. The article that described her as rude, cruel and stupid... I think there's truth in that.

Update: As things stand now both May 7 short date & Plan B long date of Dec 31 are out. Now back to May 22. Still possibility to extend for indeterminate length if UK notifies on EU elections by Apr 11. Germany didn't want limit on long extension. Health warning: V highly fluid.

Marina Hyde described May today as the sort of player you want to sell to your bitterest of rivals. Could not agree more.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2019 20:11

red No, I think Timothy is as bad as his press

imo, May is one of those very stubborn people who dig themselves into a deep hole rather than back down
and they get ever angrier with those around them

tobee · 21/03/2019 20:11

Thanks Red!

And here is the sun with a stockpiling tip whilst we wait to learn our Brexit fate.

Asda is selling 100 Jaffa Cakes for just £4
The deal means each Jaffa Cake costs just 4p

Anyway here's keir starmer live tweeting...

^I’ve been reflecting on what Theresa May said last night.

The reality is that we are in this crisis because of her. The Prime Minister is simply incapable of reflecting on her own failed strategy and the reckless red lines she put down at the beginning of the negotiations. 1/3^

The divisive rhetoric she used last night was simply wrong.

Whipping up populism is not the solution and can never be allowed to succeed in our country.

We must do all we can to protect the values of our democracy. 2/3

Whatever happens in the coming days, one thing is clear: the Prime Minister has no mandate and no right to threaten our country with a no deal Brexit.

If she is unwilling to show leadership at a time of national crisis, then Parliament must be given the chance to do so. 3/3

I really do have to get myself some jaffa cakes.

I’m on the site now but the number has remained unchanged for ages? Seems stuck at 1,311,334?

MillyCoddler · 21/03/2019 20:16

it's even making me consider going out to riot and I'm just a lazy old mum

Grin Me too.

I was thinking this morning if we get to the middle of next week with no deal I'm going to have to kick off big time!

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 20:16

red No, I think Timothy is as bad as his press

I think you are probably right. Just interesting to see May starting to be cast in that manner herself.

Opinium finds British public shift toward "no deal"

What should happen next if Commons unable to agree on deal?

Leave with no deal 46% (+3)

Delay Article 50 to hold public vote 39% (-3)

Labour leavers swing behind no-deal; 68% now back no deal, up from 48% last week

I feel a trip to Asda coming on! 😂

I love Keir a bit more right now. He does appear very measured.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/03/2019 20:18

The general public really can't be trusted with another vote, can it?

OogieMcBoogie · 21/03/2019 20:18

Bloody hell.

MyNameIsArthur · 21/03/2019 20:19

Was just listening to May in Brussels on BBC news. She just kept reiterating how she is going to deliver Brexit but added preferably with a deal. In other words she is going ahead with Brexit no matter what, whether it's with a deal or not. Unless there is some way of stopping her, Brexit is going ahead

horseshit · 21/03/2019 20:19

Guy from the Irish Times (?) on TV says they’re back to talking about 7 May now, German journalist standing next to him saying 7 May is off the table again. But general consensus still seems to be that it’ll be an unconditional extension either way.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 20:19

www.itv.com/news/2019-03-21/has-the-prime-minister-cracked-her-chief-whip/
Has the Prime Minister cracked her Chief Whip?

In the tea rooms and offices of Parliament, the Chief Whip has been openly admitting today that he found last night's statement in Downing Street "appalling."

That is quite the outburst for a man known - indeed hired - for his discretion.

OogieMcBoogie · 21/03/2019 20:19

I fear that whatever happens no there’s no coming back from this. The damage is almost irreparable in my lifetime.

TheMostBoringPersonEver · 21/03/2019 20:21

I am self employed and on the basis that nothing was going to happen today I powered through and finished my weeks work (bar a few bits I am finishing up now) so I have all day tomorrow to devote to reading and watching this shit show. I now can't decide if that was a good idea Confused I may start on next weeks to do list instead and hide.

Holidayshopping · 21/03/2019 20:23

Labour leavers swing behind no-deal; 68% now back no deal, up from 48% last week

Blimey, so May screwing about in such a spectacular way means 20% more for No Deal rather than Remain?!

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 20:23

Please give an unconditional extension and May accept the damn thing. Please!

Kate Bevan
FLEXTENSION.

Fuck OFF. No. For God's sake, haven't we suffered enough without some truly appalling portmanteau coined to mock our suffering???

David Allen Green @davidallengreen
Flextension means Flextension.
