After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

I put my US postcode in along with correct country and was accepted. I am a UK citizen and I am registered as an overseas voter.

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 14:46

Lonelytiredandlow I think people WANT to believe that the EU is somehow responsible for the shitness of their lives. And large parts of Tory and Labour Party have been happy to go along with this for decades so as not to shoulder the blame.
We need an entirely new bunch or representatives willing to serve their country and not just feather their nests (I exclude Jess Philips and accept there are others not doing this)
Anyone remember the expenses scandal 🙈

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 14:47

there is a significant risk of a miscalculation here which leads to an outcome which very few MPs actually want

Is it actually possible for MPs to actually take control eg by HoC sitting on Saturday thereby gaining a whole extra day to allow for motions to be presented by MPs? It would be interesting to see if MPs would be prepared to vote against a PV on the very same day as hundreds of thousands turn out to support one.

LonelyTiredandLow · 21/03/2019 14:48

The very least we could do is cause the worst government in history to take their own party down Grin

I emailed No 10 and actually said her plan was short term as she wasn't admitting to the leave voters we will not simply hear "the end" of Brexit on the day we leave, as it will go on for decades. That one lie in itself will not help her party.

I wish I had copied my letter. When people are saying about a confirmation email, are you talking about the one from the petition or your letter to No 10? I didn't get a confirmation from mine if the latter...

Runningintothesunset · 21/03/2019 14:49

About to trip over 1 million... Grin

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 14:49

Frances o'grady @ francesogrady
The prime minister has walked us into a national emergency. @The_TUC and @CBItweets agree - she needs to urgently change her Brexit approach and find a Plan B that protects jobs, rights and livelihoods.

Heather Stewart @ guardianheather
This is quite an extraordinary joint intervention from the TUC and CBI - essentially begging May to adopt a plan B; and demanding a meeting with her.

Union and Businesses uniting against a sitting Tory government.

Now over 1 million

Yamayo · 21/03/2019 14:54

Million signatures as of now.

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 14:54

Bloody hell, I didn't think anything could surprise me at this stage, but TUC and CBI working together?! If those two groups can manage it then why on earth can't TM actually find a way to work with HoC rather than against it?!

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/03/2019 14:54

@LonelyTiredandLow - if you used the portal linked a few pages back to email TM then you should have got a confirmation link. If you just did it yourself then that wouldn't happen.
But some people will be talking about the confirmation emails from the petition - there is a bit of a blockage and they are taking longer coming through.

1 000 199 signatures - and 7 minutes until 3pm Grin well done everyone signing!

EweSurname · 21/03/2019 14:56

Because how will we get a no deal if she does that?

prettybird · 21/03/2019 14:56

@NicolaSturgeon
An issue as big and important as Brexit should not come down to petitions - that said, if you are frustrated that the PM is just not listening, you can sign here.

dontcallmelen · 21/03/2019 14:56

Crikey the world has definitely turned on its axis, if those two organisations can come together.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 14:57

Yes I believe it is.

If I remember correctly the Speaker said parliament would have to vote for it though. And typically parliament doesn't sit in Westminster on Fridays. But it is tomorrow for private member bills.

I note the following ones tomorrow btw

European Union (Referendum on Withdrawal Agreement) Bill: Second reading - Tom Brake

European Union Withdrawal (Evaluation of Effects on Health and Social Care Sectors) Bill: Second Reading - Brendan O'Hara

Dog Meat (Consumption) (Offences) Bill: 2nd reading - Bill Wiggin

Prime Minister (Accountability to House of Commons) Bill: Second Reading - Mr Peter Bone

European Union (Revocation of Notification of Withdrawal) (No. 2) Bill: Second Reading - Angus Brendan MacNeil

European Union (Revocation of Notification of Withdrawal) Bill: Second Reading - Geraint Davies

Terms of Withdrawal from EU (Referendum) (No. 2) Bill: 2nd reading - Geraint Davies

Amongst others (many of which look really interesting and worthwhile but aren't getting anywhere due to Brexit dominating everything).

So in theory we have until the close of play tomorrow for it to be decided to sit on sat.

Personally ill be rather pissed off if they don't tbh.

Union and Businesses uniting against a sitting Tory government.

Well May did want a consensus ....

bellinisurge · 21/03/2019 14:59

Bloody hell @RedToothBrush . That CBI/TUC letter is unprecedented and mind blowing.

pepinana · 21/03/2019 15:00

I genuinely cannot believe this is happening. Can we as the people oust the government? My three year old could do a better job.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/03/2019 15:01

Bloody hell. What has this country come to that it needs union leaders to give the Tory PM a good talking to? I despair.

Red, you must be a similar distance from Liverpool as me, albeit in a different direction.

I hope you can find time to go on Saturday; I know it means so much to you.

DGRossetti · 21/03/2019 15:01

Incidentally, I emailed my MP (Labour, pro-PV, anti WA, and - for now - Corbyn loyalist) separately echoing my sentiments on the petition and email to the PM, but also deploring any attempts by anyone to use intimidation, violence or any other criminal behaviour against our elected representatives.

Much as you may disagree with your MP over their politics, it's not a bad thing to show them some love for being an MP - particularly when it seems the Prime Minister would be more comfortable behind a pitchfork than a podium.

MadAboutWands · 21/03/2019 15:02

Henry Newman
I think the French & EU are bluffing on No Deal (reposted as had typo before)

Reading French News there is the feeling the EU will not let the UK crash out because of the economic and political cost it would create.

DGRossetti · 21/03/2019 15:03

Who likes their bible ?

...and the lion shall lie down with the lamb...

(although it was rather corrected with the addition "but the lamb won't get much sleep Grin ...)

WaterQuarter · 21/03/2019 15:08

Unless one's MP is Christopher Chope. Don't show him any love.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2019 15:09

Iain Martin@iainmartin1 (Times)

....From what I hear May is increasingly resigned to accepting no deal.

She'll refuse to ask for a long extension.

Parliament cannot agree or work out what to do about it.

Cabinet won't remove her. Tory MPs can't.

Brexit... in eight days

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2019 15:12

May, on arrival for EU Council summit in Brussels:

'This is a matter of personal regret for me
but a short extension would give parliament time to make a final choice that delivers on the result of the referendum.'

Arborea · 21/03/2019 15:15

@RedToothBrush any links to where the coaches from the NW are leaving from? I'm hoping to get a place if DH agrees to wrangle the kids all day!!
