Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

A small extract from the email I’ve just sent to my MP. Wasn’t sure about referencing a PV as it’s not something I’m sure about but if we go for a long extension we maybe need to have a reason of sorts? Reply to my last one took about 10 days so...... 😬

Following Mrs. May’s shockingly hubristic speech last night, I wanted to make it clear that I appreciate the attempts being made by MPs from all parties to check and challenge the Prime Minister’s obdurate stance. However, it is now past time that action is taken to stop her (and her government) from causing any more damage to this country’s economy and society.

With it remaining unlikely that she can command a sufficient majority in parliament to pass her Withdrawal Agreement, I would suggest that what is needed at this time is at the very least a long extension to the Article 50 date or for Article 50 to be revoked altogether. Cross-party agreement needs to be found for a way forward and I am firmly of the belief that a long extension (with perhaps a further referendum) could find extensive cross-party support.

HazardGhost · 21/03/2019 14:01

Eek! Got to catch up...

I'm so teary today. I'm not quite sure why, I'm sad I can't go to the march, overjoyed so many people are going, sad the PM is stupid and cruel, glad some MPs are doing something. Scared of no deal, dislike the WA, heartened by the petition, angry some people want leave at any cost including life, glad so many people are still caring.

DGRossetti · 21/03/2019 14:05

Even if they voted to remain or still wish to remain they have an over inflated sense of the UK's importance and power and don't understand how the EU has been the factor in allowing us to maintain stature way beyond when we should have lost it.

Bearing in mind when some say " we won the war", they really, really believe it. For them, the bank holiday armchairs of England really are as dangerous as the beaches at Normandy.

67chevvyimpala · 21/03/2019 14:05

Petition up to 946k

NigellasGuest · 21/03/2019 14:08

Can we be sure the signatures are all genuine?

PestyMachtubernahme · 21/03/2019 14:09

MPs have been advised to share a taxi home after the PM incites hatred.

www.politicshome.com/news/uk/foreign-affairs/brexit/news/102690/excl-mps-advised-share-taxis-home-amid-fears-brexit

On the plus side. Vince Cable received a round of applause when he suggested to European leaders in Brussels, that we should revoke at the end of next week if there has been no agreement to the deal.

DGRossetti · 21/03/2019 14:11

Can we be sure the signatures are all genuine?

As much as for any other petition.

You need a valid UK postcode to sign, I believe. FWIW.

Bearing in mind the UK governments hard-on for all things digital, they'd have a hard time insisting their passport site is OK, but the petition one is shit. (Although it wouldn't surprise me).

NigellasGuest · 21/03/2019 14:12

Good, I hope so

HazardGhost · 21/03/2019 14:13

If im remember rightly...This came up on the last big petition, the gov did check if signatures were genuine and the number of signers dipped slightly after checks.

HazardGhost · 21/03/2019 14:14

Also trolls never seem keen to boost remain support....

Wonder why Hmm

1tisILeClerc · 21/03/2019 14:22

{You need a valid UK postcode to sign, I believe. FWIW.}
As I am in France I selected 'France' and put my French postcode.
As I got a confirmation I can only presume it was counted properly although can the (UK) government be trusted?

grannycake · 21/03/2019 14:29

Occasional poster (and long time lurker) just popping in to say that you have persuaded me to go on the march. Last two available seats on coach from my area (South Wales)

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 14:29

New Statesman @newstatesman
"May might bring back David Davis and Dominic Raab, while saying ta-ta to Remainers who abstained in the no-deal vote."

@AndrewMarr9 on May’s reshuffle plans, Corbyn’s gardener socialism – and why I’m painting clowns.

Don't worry this is just speculation on Andrew Marrs part, but terrifying all the same.

A lot of people think Brexit will bring long term gain. I wonder why they think that.
Every leaver without exception that I have spoken to truly believes that this will hurt EU more than us. I always hear how the EU is going into recession and the EURO will crash, the EU is a failed project. All of that seems to be the main 'crystal ball' that only Leavers have been blessed with. It also ignores most of the government's own predictions and statistics, most recently from the recently posted Economic and Fiscal Outlook of this month.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 14:34

Chris Hanretty @ chrishanretty
Today in unsurprising findings: constituencies which voted to Remain in 2016 also sign a petition to revoke Article 50 at higher rates. Code at
t.co/EBiU7Si5pS; data may change as more signatures arrive.

R Phelps @ greygossling
Seems like mainly Tory seats above the line.

Chris Hanretty @chrishanretty
Yes: I had wondered whether that's just a consequence of Labour-held seats generally voting at much lower rates (because they have fewer internet users), or whether it's more significant than that

Allan Sikk @ allansikk
Thanks - very interesting (if unexpected). The fit is improved with logged % of signatures (very skewed dist). The strongly Remain-leaning constituencies aren't actually outliers:

Chris Hanretty @chrishanretty
And indeed a log-transform would be an obvious choice for an very-nearly-strictly-positive variable (cc @JoshuaBlake_ @BDStanley)

Petition data is showing something that might trouble CCHQ...

Good for you grannycake! Flowers

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 14:39

Adam Payne @adampayne26
EU source: "No expectation here that the deal will pass after May speech last night"

Henry Newman @henrynewman
I think the French & EU are bluffing on No Deal (reposted as had typo before)

I think if it came to it they would have to offer an extension

But no one can be sure

There is a significant risk of a miscalculation here which leads to an outcome which very few MPs actually want

It was staged by May to stem popularity for JC.

Well he played right into her hands, didn't he? The term "useful idiot" springs to mind.

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/03/2019 14:40

984 885! Can we get to 1 million by 3pm?

TheElementsSong · 21/03/2019 14:40

Yay grannycake! Cake
