Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

sos JC was a petulant fool to walk out, it takes up air time that should be devoted to sorting this mess out. He really cannot sit in a meeting with someone who was in his own party until very recently?

"Stand not upon the order of your going but go at once"

As highlighted by Shakespeare it's not a new issue, the UK has always been obsessed by rank and order and everything following those rules.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 13:34

Gideon Skinner @gideonskinner
But overall views about impact of Brexit remain split. Few say it will be good for economy in short term or their own standard of living, but more hopeful for its longer-term economic impact & that it will improve Britain's control over its own decisions and over EU immigration

These two graphs are extraordinary.

Less than 100 000 to go until we reach 1 million.
I disagree with the posters saying that this petition doesn't mean anything - because there was another similarly fast growing petition back in 2016 - it means that we haven;t gone away. It shows that for all the times the politicians have said the people have got behind brexit and just 'want them to get on with it' was all lies. Because here we are - three years later - still saying the same thing.
And whilst it will never sway TM and her fellow ERGers (totally agree with whoever it was who pointed out she wasn't influenced by them, she was them) it might just get enough still sane mps to stop, reflect and consider and not plough on regardless. It might remind them that hard core leavers are not the only group out there - and that there is a large group of voters who are very angry with what is being done to them and who will hold them to account if they don't do everything in their power to avert this disaster.

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 13:39

The graphs are really interesting. A lot of people think Brexit will bring long term gain. I wonder why they think that.

SusanWalker · 21/03/2019 13:39

The tiggers are currently in talks with the electoral commission about becoming a political party. They have a reasonable number of MPs for a small party. I don't think it was unreasonable for them to be there. Their votes could hold the balance.

JC was livid when the labour MPs left. I think he took it personally and sees them as a threat to his faction being in control of the party. Their defecting was what encouraged Tom Watson to set up a new group within the party for moderates. He is not a gracious loser.

A lot of people think there's an afterlife. I wonder why they think that ?

To stop the petition site crashing, its possible to watch the number of signatures on a live feed. I cant link to it but it's on twotter.

BiglyBadgers · 21/03/2019 13:43

34% support a delay of up to two years

I think this is actually quite a lot, more than I would have thought for an extension of up to two years. I really do feel like opinion is swinging though I suspect it's happening far too late.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 21/03/2019 13:43

Petition is just about to cross the 1 million votes mark...

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 13:44

Why would you live your life in the belief that if we leave the EU now then in 10 years time I'll be better off and have a nicer life? Where does that come from exactly?

dontcallmelen · 21/03/2019 13:45

Just had my confirmation email, took nearly an hour.

tobee · 21/03/2019 13:45

I emailed my MP last week about supporting revoke. I haven't yet had a reply. Hardly surprising as I live in ERG central Northamptonshire. The only good thing I can say about my MP is that he isn't Peter Bone or Andrea Leadsom.

BiglyBadgers · 21/03/2019 13:46

I've just gone on the live feed and am bemused by the fact that 700 people including myself are just sitting here watching a petition mount up. We really do live in strange times indeed.

Darren McCaffrey @ darreneuronews
EU COUNCIL: Lithuanian President @Grybauskaite_LT on #Brexit: “We will be supportive to the prime minister in the way we can, but the timing is still under discussion.”

She added “We're still optimistic because we need to support the U.K. and the U.K. for us is important.”

Can we add a PS to May's letter?

PS will you be kind to us for Eurovision even if we are utter twats about this?

Considering how much shit the Eastern Europeans have come in for in the UK, it's nice their President can be so forgiving ....

The rate of signing is the highest the site has ever had to deal with and we have had to make some changes to ensure the site remains stable and open for signatures and new petitions. Thanks for bearing with us.

The graphs are really interesting. A lot of people think Brexit will bring long term gain. I wonder why they think that.

Even if they voted to remain or still wish to remain they have an over inflated sense of the UK's importance and power and don't understand how the EU has been the factor in allowing us to maintain stature way beyond when we should have lost it. It also suggests that people still believe in lies that was told during the ref and in the years preceding it about immigration and Sovereignty.

Its why patrotism can be turned against the populace.
