Theresa May has asked for a short extension until 30th June, after Cabinet Brexiteers stopped her asking for a longer extension.

She has not stated the purpose of the extension beyond 'to pass her deal'. Which does not have a majority, because if it did May would be overturn the standing order Bercow invoked to block MVIII.

The EU have not reacted well to the request. Noises from France sound negative.

That doesn't mean we won't get one, but its not looking good. If we do it looks unlikely to go beyond May 23rd and EU elections.

We do not expect a response from the EU until Monday.

May has therefore in practice reinstated the possibility of no deal next Friday. Or at the end of any extension we do get.

She is due to give a speech on a podum at 6pm tonight.

Parliament has called an emergency debate on the extension to try and take control of debate. It, so far, looks like no more that the Brexit Secretary filibusting. Its going round and round in circles going no where.

Meanwhile rumours that Operation Yellowhammer will kick in on Monday are in the air. That's the first steps to martial law to manage no deal. This is very bad.

9 days to go.

From earlier today

Kate McCann @ katemccann
NEW: Labour MPs Lisa Nandy and Gareth Snell have come up with an amendment to the motion on Monday which has cross party and Brexiteer support to guarantee parliament a say in new relationship and a vote too. Gov whips making positive noises too, Nandy says.

I was so enraged I spent ages sharing the petition.

tobee · 20/03/2019 22:25

But she isn't listening to everyone in a fair way. Having a meeting with cabinet members who are brexiteers. The news showed a clip of them all trooping out of Downing Street. No Rudd . Her chancellor was invited for God's sake! She doesn't seem to know the concept of conciliation. She's not taken any advice that's been noticeable. The ref result was a very marginal win for leave. She's chosen to drive a wedge between the whole nation even deeper. She's caved to the ERG time and again. They don't compromise. They want it all. They want to take over the Tory party. Much like Momentum do Labour. That's the state of the two main parties right now. Divisive and extreme. With no apology.

SparklySneakers · 20/03/2019 22:25

If they are holding a vote on the extension tomorrow, could some of the 27 attach conditions? Tusk has said an extension is possible but only if the WA is agreed BUT can he decide that unilaterally or would the 27 have to agree?

TheElementsSong · 20/03/2019 22:25

We've been umm-ing and ahh-ing about going on the march. Much as Leavers will be astonished to discover, many of us don't live near London. It's a hella long day for our DCs (coach leaves before 7am and not expected to return until 11pm).

Perhaps a good compromise would be if we donated coach fare for others? What does the thread think?

GroovieGazelloo · 20/03/2019 22:26

Who does she really think she is ?
To keep everyone waiting so long ?!!
For that drivel !

I am caught between a deep sadness and anger. Tonight, for the first time ever, I have wanted to ask for a new nationality. No offence to anyone on this thread, but genuinely, I am no longer ok about Britishness being my identity.

I think the thing that really took me over the edge was her being late - followed by hot air- such disrespect for the nation.

In France, where I live, being late is a big deal. If you're late for an exam, you miss it, fail it and do your whole year's work again - even if there's a train strike - whatever. That is the same for everyone here. It's about mutual respect. Her attitude tonight just shows me how out of step she is. I bet she's riled other Europeans for the same reason. Late on Brexit. Late on speech. And her me, me, me stuff.

She represents no one but herself. Someone upthread said "she was a remainer. If you believe that you'll believe anything."
I agree. I believed it. Now, it no longer rings true.

The thing that's cheering me up is seeing the petition going up and up and up.

The80sweregreat · 20/03/2019 22:26

500 MPs could rise up as one and do something surely?
There are more people in parliament against no deal than for it. They had an advisory vote against no deal and won.
(Fantasy world here I know, but a revolution would be fab)
Won't happen though.
We will leave with no deal.

TORY CROWN SHAKE-UP Tory rising star Johnny Mercer calls for major changes to leadership race rules
The Plymouth MP wants Conservative MPs to pick four candidates for the party’s wider membership to pick from, not just the current two

This is a point. Couldn't the party just rewrite the party rules to rid themselves of May?

“But she isn't listening to everyone in a fair way. Having a meeting with cabinet members who are ...”

What do you think? What do you think she should do ?

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 22:28

TheElementsSong That would be a very sensible compromise and a very generous thing to do.
Another might be if one of you went and the other stayed at home with the DC - if that is at all possible?

Random18 · 20/03/2019 22:30

Could we see some resignations tomorrow?

Surely any sensible Cabinet ministerncan no longer support her.

And the risk of No Deal is really high now. It’s clear it’s what she wants.

Her deal will never go through. Not after tonight. My MP will vote for it but a slimy bar steward only looking out for himself.

Corbyn had a chance tonight and yet again he failed.

Can the queen call in the army to dispose her?

Justasecondnow · 20/03/2019 22:30

De-lurking to add my thanks for this thread. No one in (my) real life talks about this and I sometimes feel I’m watching this country implode on my own. Petition signed. No idea what else to do. Can’t march this weekend. Stock pile I guess. But I suppose I’m a bit late for that. Fuck me this is nuts.

tobee · 20/03/2019 22:30

For a start do indicative votes. And adhere to the results.

She shouldn't have had her red lines or invoked article 50 but too late for that.

Littlespaces · 20/03/2019 22:30

I'm going by myself and leaving dh with ds (who has an exam).

Random18 · 20/03/2019 22:31

She is a Dictator- I never thought I would see the day I no longer lived in a democracy

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 22:31

That's the one Hester thanks for linking.

tobee · 20/03/2019 22:32

Off to listen to some true crime podcasts now for light relief. Confused

Pilcrow · 20/03/2019 22:32

Groovie and late with sending her letter to the EU. Katya Adler on BBC News described them 'waiting and waiting and waiting' for it to turn up. When it did, it was too late for some of the 27 to consult properly.

FFS.

I signed the petition after tonight's shitshow and now I can't stop watching it keep clicking up, either.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/03/2019 22:33

“Can the queen call in the army to dispose her”

!
Crikey.....

I think there is only one person entitled to criticise Theresa May and that is Ken Clarke

Peregrina · 20/03/2019 22:33

If she did genuinely start to listen to people and what they wanted I think she would find some themes emerging: people are fed up with austerity, they value the NHS, they want to see their children's schools funded properly, the housing market is broken, Universal Credit. There is plenty there to start building a consensus on.

If her only interest is the Tory party, which it appears to be, then she could ask herself how much of an appeal their policies have to the body of the electorate say between the ages of 30-55 i.e. the children of the baby boomers.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 22:34

The petition has gone up over 100 000 in less than 2 hours. Her speech really didn't have the desired affect, did it?

RedToothBrush · 20/03/2019 22:35

Motherofdragons, a week is a long time in politics.

Do we a) actually have a week left?
b) I've said previously that whatever outcome there is, has to ultimately be signed off and facilitated by the PM. Think about that.
C) Anyone still harbouring thoughts that May will revoke, really needs to have their head read
d) For a PV also see C) for the same sentiment

A week is a long time in politics, but nothing has changed. May is still PM and that's that.

Time to start panic buying.
