Theresa May has asked for a short extension until 30th June, after Cabinet Brexiteers stopped her asking for a longer extension.

She has not stated the purpose of the extension beyond 'to pass her deal'. Which does not have a majority, because if it did May would be overturn the standing order Bercow invoked to block MVIII.

The EU have not reacted well to the request. Noises from France sound negative.

That doesn't mean we won't get one, but its not looking good. If we do it looks unlikely to go beyond May 23rd and EU elections.

We do not expect a response from the EU until Monday.

May has therefore in practice reinstated the possibility of no deal next Friday. Or at the end of any extension we do get.

She is due to give a speech on a podum at 6pm tonight.

Parliament has called an emergency debate on the extension to try and take control of debate. It, so far, looks like no more that the Brexit Secretary filibusting. Its going round and round in circles going no where.

Meanwhile rumours that Operation Yellowhammer will kick in on Monday are in the air. That's the first steps to martial law to manage no deal. This is very bad.

9 days to go.

This is all fine.

BollocksToBrexit · 20/03/2019 16:44

I wish someone would just make this stop. I'm reaching the point where leave, remain, Theresa's deal or nowt, I just don't care anymore. Just make it stop.

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 20/03/2019 16:44

Still not sure how there can be a vote next week given Bercow statement. I am aware that yes, they could vote to remove this protocol ; but I also recall the mp who always mucks up private member bills to prevent them getting through without a proper debate eg the upskirting furores. People like him may vote against whatever on principle and if numbers are tight , I assume they would be those will count against TM too.

I too think it will be no deal still hoping for a last minute revoke but I think it unlikely now.

lonelyplanetmum · 20/03/2019 16:44

Much tougher than expected

Why? The EU have said for over a year there'd need to be proper grounds for an extension - either an election or a PV.

TM writes a letter with no grounds. She's taking the piss.

BollocksToBrexit · 20/03/2019 16:44

How can the WA be passed if Bercow has said no to a repeat attempt?

TheMostBoringPersonEver · 20/03/2019 16:45

Heidi Allen is quite good!

Filibustering - what decision comes at the end of this debate please?

And Placemat King with this picture.

Also love that I read a point on here then someone raises it in the house! (Are they reading?!?!)

TheNumberfaker · 20/03/2019 16:47

If there’s been a majority TWICE for rejecting no-deal, then surely there would be a majority for revoke? The last one was “...In any circumstances.”

MyNameIsArthur · 20/03/2019 16:48

PMK

Hi Red hope you don't mind or think me rude for asking. Am curious to know what your job is. I've been wondering if you are a reporter at Westminster? Just tell me to mind my own business if you want to

StripeyChina · 20/03/2019 16:49

PMK.
Also think it may now be 'accidental' no deal with everyone crying:
'it's not MY fault'.
FFS. We have been a Great Nation (in the past)
What ARE we doing??? :(

Justine Greening was just very good, quite a moving contribution from her.

Benn up now.

dontcallmelen · 20/03/2019 16:50

PMK thank you, fuck & few more fucks this is now really quite frightening.

DGRossetti · 20/03/2019 16:51

Much tougher than expected

Depends who was doing the expecting I guess.

None of this from the EU should come as any surprise after Tusks "special place in Hell" remark. That was the signal things had changed. The problem was - as has been for the entire A50 process - No one in the UK was listening. Which is a failure of our press as much as our parliament. If they'd reported properly instead of giving the ERG a daily reach-around, they might had spotted this.

SusanWalker · 20/03/2019 16:51

This is completely messing up my spring cleaning list.

Heidi Allen good as ever. I also can't watch her without wishing I had her hair.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 20/03/2019 16:52

There’s a new Revoke petition gathering speed. Not sure if we’re allowed to link?

RedToothBrush · 20/03/2019 16:52

BCF it sounds like the EU will only allow a technical short extension for the WA. (Mays statement differed in that it said she wanted the extension to get the WA through, rather than a technical extension)

I think if we had said we would do EP elections and go for a long extension that would have been viable.

The problem is May didn't listen to a word about the EU needing a reason for an extension. And just is still flapping about without a proper plan for the way forward.

I was saying in May 2016 'What is the plan for leaving?'. I guess we are all still waiting, and I'm not bloody surprised the EU have said enough is enough.

But yes, looks like May's deal, No deal or Revoke. Not that you'd believe that if you are watching the Emergency Debate currently on, where there is still lots of MPs blathering on about alternative deals (eg soft brexit) or a long extension for a PV (thats not happening, after May ruled that out yesterday to appease her Brexiteer Cabinet).

How come the satire site has better coverage of this than some 'news' pages?

Westminstenders: Screaming at the TV.
StripeyChina · 20/03/2019 16:52

So, if no grounds' for extension and TM asks for one on that basis, will it be no deal, revoke or PV (will it depend on size of march on 23rd)???

prettybird · 20/03/2019 16:53

Red is at the moment a SAHM with a young ds, iirc, but just as importantly a Media studies degree and an interest in how the media is used to manipulate us. And a strong Remainer of course Grin

I have to acknowledge that my view of the value of media studies degrees has been drastically upgraded, thanks to Red's concise analyses.

DGRossetti · 20/03/2019 16:53

Not that you'd believe that if you are watching the Emergency Debate currently on

As these threads show, the best place to get detailed news and analysis is well away from the UK media circus.

OMGithurts · 20/03/2019 16:54

If there's no extension there can't be a PV, that would take months to organise.

Kaboodler · 20/03/2019 16:54

Philip Ryan
@Philip_Ryan
'Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announces that Prime Minister Theresa May will address the British public tonight. I’m sure she’ll be delighted he did that.'

I shouldn't laugh...

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2019 16:55

KLAXON !!

I've read it may even be too late to Revoke - without an extension - and that she does need the HoC:

2 reasons:

1) The ECA (European Communities Act) 1972, which is scheduled to be repealed on 29 March, makes all EU law binding.

Without it, we would be in no-man's land, neither in nor out

So, although May can "Revoke" on her own, she needs the HoC to cancel the repeal of the ECA

^2) The "frustration" principle from the Miller judgement
"ministers cannot frustrate the purpose of a statute"
