Westminstenders: Neglectful Drunkeness!

RedToothBrush · 16/03/2019 23:04

The HoC has spend the past 3 years in a state of Neglectful Drunkeness.

As it stands less then two weeks from Brexit Day, there is no deal we were promised. The Conservative and Labour Parties are more divided than ever.

The government is in disarray as 8 Cabinet ministers plus the chief whip voted against the Prime Minister including the Brexit Secretary who had minutes earlier argued for an extension only to vote against it. He is now on the brink of resignation.

The DUP look like they may be about to capitulate and vote for a deal. But it may not be enough even then.

This is what the cliff edge looks like.

Who wants to take a closer look?

I need to catch up on the past half hour or so as was watching the HoC live but stopping by to share the disturbing news that I have an intellectual crush on Bercow. I love a man with a brain who's not afraid to use it and all those big words and no nonsense stance get my neutrons firing rapidly Blush

Flowerplower · 18/03/2019 16:59

I'm left pondering...is it progress for women's equality that one of the three horsemen of the apocalyose is a woman (BoJo, JRM and Loathesome)????

TalkinPaece · 18/03/2019 17:01

LouiseCollins
More people, when the question was asked, voted for Leave than for Remain, that's a matter of fact, not an opinion.
On an earlier thread a Swiss poster reminded us that when they get a referendum option they get pages of information to make an informed choice
(over 50 pages for a vote on cycle paths in that instance)

What happened in 2016 was not an informed decision

BigChocFrenzy · 18/03/2019 17:02

louisecollins The referendum does not overwrite every other rule that governs us.
Does not overwrite our Constitution.
Erskine May was 19th century - the HoC, rightly or wrongly, has been using his rules ever since he set them up.

The Brexit vote was organised by people who had no plan and no direction
Not surprising we are in this chaos

The most likely outcome is still a No Deal Brexit, with Revoke only a very outside chance

Anything else is dependent on the goodwill and trust of the EU, which may be wearing as thin as their patience

1tisILeClerc · 18/03/2019 17:03

Or you could go the full Monty, Loathesome, May and Arlene.

LouiseCollins28 · 18/03/2019 17:03

We do have a mechanism for direct representation. Had we none, the vote in 1975 wouldn't have been held, nor would 2016, nor IndyRef in 2014.

MPs did play a part, the decided to held a referendum and voted for one, they've since voted to trigger Article 50, its not like they haven't been involved.

tobee · 18/03/2019 17:04

It's so depressing that from the vox pops I've seen people's conclusions seem not to be "oh we were lied to about brexit/this wasn't what I thought I was voting on/I just wanted to be heard/the government has ignored our deprivation" but "this is boring! Let's just leave!"

Depressing. But not surprising.

Sostenueto · 18/03/2019 17:04

I know who Leadsom reminds me of now! That loathesome woman who always wore pink and with all the cat pictures Dolores whatever her name was! The one that tortured the kids at Hogwarts!

Lweji · 18/03/2019 17:05

More people, when the question was asked, voted for Leave than for Remain, that's a matter of fact, not an opinion.

But MPs have also voted, but apparently want a third round of voting, which they are denying the electorate. Interesting.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/03/2019 17:06

Umbridge.

1tisILeClerc · 18/03/2019 17:06

Oh the irony. An empire spanning half the globe confined to 3rd world status in a dodgy referendum. What a WAY TO GO.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/03/2019 17:06

Fabian Zuleeg@FabianZuleeg (European Policy Centre, Brussels)

Bercow's decision + unwillingness of EU27 to reopen WA means HoC has to, at some point, choose between

1) WA with new PD
2) PV
3) GE

4) No deal.

1) & 2) split Conservatives & not much support in HoC = unlikely.

Conservatives/DUP will not want 3).

So 4) by default or design?

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 18/03/2019 17:06

Or you could go the full Monty, Loathesome, May and Arlene.

Loved this:

2059

Father of the House Jacob Rees-Mogg opposes the 1000th Meaningful Vote.

Leader of the Opposition Owen Jones refuses to commit Labour as it is "playing the long game".

Bored officials draw up a further Article 50 extension.

DGRossetti · 18/03/2019 17:08

It's so depressing that from the vox pops I've seen

as has been noted on these threads (and elsewhere) such surveys are ... statistically interesting. Remember recently the BBC couldn't seem to find any Remainers in Edinburgh when they did a vox pop.

I suspect an awful lot of Remainers have kept their counsel in the past two years. Being called a traitor can have a serious impact on your happiness.

Sostenueto · 18/03/2019 17:09

I'm first in the queue for Berkows brains sparkly and though it really does turn me on his eloquence and brain power I will willingly let you have the rest of him because I'm too old to bother with all that sex stuff!Grin

Joining the EEC was very beneficial to the UK.
Joining Germany in 1939 may or may not have been so beneficial, things change.
Dragging up decisions from 45 or 80 years ago aren't relevant.

HateIsNotGood · 18/03/2019 17:11

Bloody Heck - Bercow's just dashed any hopes of pushing WA through in time. Being a WA supporter, whilst being a bit pissed off, I think he's probably right.

Hmm, what now? Thinking caps on folks. We've got to 'tinker' with WA enough, probably along the GFA-DUP 'lines' or another fundamental change to get WA through. Or is Bercow's ruling enough 'evidence' to ask the EU for an extension - of this or that length?

Or do we ....?

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2019 17:12

At least May will stop staying it’s this or nothing
Won’t she?
I can’t listen to her saying the same things tirelessly

Sostenueto · 18/03/2019 17:12

The three stooges.....May, Foster and Leadsom have got to be the best advert for ' how not to be a real woman'.Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 18/03/2019 17:12

This referendum was legally advisory, as Cameron & the HoC chose this
i.e. a glorified, very expensive, nationwide opinion poll

Even if it had been legally binding, the HoC cannot pass any law that a future HoC cannot repeal,
or indeed that the same HoC cannot repeal the very next day.

e.g. the Fixed term Parliament Act requires a â…” HoC vote to call a GE, but a simple vote - with a majority of 1 - can repeal that Act and return us to the previous situation of the PM being able to call a GE whenever she wants within the 5 year term.

BollocksToBrexit · 18/03/2019 17:13

Did anyone see the German article on Theresa May on Friday?

"She is mean. She is rude. She is cruel. She is stupid. I have heard that from almost everyone who has dealt with her."

www.spiegel.de/international/europe/theresa-may-s-brexit-disaster-a-1258101.html

Sostenueto · 18/03/2019 17:15

My two fingers on right hand permanently up even at mere mention of May!

HateIsNotGood · 18/03/2019 17:16

Posted already elsewhere Bollocks.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/03/2019 17:16

hate No tinkering possible with the WA, because the EU has said NO more negotiating, "no 3rd chance"

What is still possible this week is to vote for a PV, with this WA vs Remain .... and to make it binding
which the HoC can still ignore but is at least the default if they get constipated again.

LouiseCollins28 · 18/03/2019 17:17

Which is why I mentioned 2014, and 2016, not 45 years ago or 80 years ago. Direct democracy has a precedent here, whether people agree with the outcomes returned in specific votes, or not.

Again, just a reminder too, for those saying my position is illegitimate, if there is a People's Vote I'm the whom the majority of you need to convince to change my mind.
