Westminstenders: Stuck in the Middle With TIGGERS

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2019 14:20

Well I don't know how we got here tonight.
We've got the feeling that something ain't right.
We're so scared as we leave the EU
And we're wondering how we'll get out of this stew

Antisemites to the left of me!
Dog Whistles to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.

'Cause I'm stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.
And I'm wondering what it is we should do.
It's so hard to keep this smile from my face.
Losing control and running all over the place.

Clowns to the left of me!
Jokers to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.

When you started off with rights
And you're starting to wonder if thats for life.
And all the politicians come crawling
Slap you on the back and say
Please . . .
Please . . .
Vote Leave and back EU Withdrawal

But we see it makes no sense at all.

Best to keep your money offshore
Than to visit the bookstore

Deniers to the left of me!
Islamaphobes to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle with you.

Its finally happened. FINALLY.

MPs have seen that their leaders have lost the plot and are hell bent on destruction and politicial ideology ahead of practicality and will justify the unjustifable in the face of democracy and they have jumped ship.

Enter stage left and stage right: The TIGGERS - members of The Independent Group.

Will there be more. Hard to say no. It seems almost certain there will be more.

Will it make a difference? Difficult to call, but these MPs would be driven out sooner or later. Such is our accelerating politicial polarisation and narrowing of views. This is their last stand. They have nothing left to lose on a personal level.

Whether you agree with the TIGGERS or still look to the other parties for policy, I do think that the emergence of the TIGGERS marks a feeling of optimism and much needed hope for many many Remainers / Moderates, even if it ultimately does fizzle out.

A reflection from 2017: People voted for Corbyn because they were looking for Hope. When he's failed to deliver that, its led to disillusionment and he can not pull the same trick again at a future GE. This makes that doubly so. People are STILL very much looking for that hope. If Brexit does go tits up in a big fashion, then what happens? To what direction do people look? I'm sure there will be the bitterest of recriminations, but... hope is a big deal. We need something...

Tick tick tick. 37 days til Brexit.

There seems to be some confusion over the Labour rule book

Kevin Schofield@polhomeeditor
Labour source: “Derek Hatton was given provisional membership, pending NEC approval. The Party was not aware of this material. Once this was brought to our attention he was suspended pending the NEC’s decision.”
You couldn’t make this stuff up.

It gets worse. Labour rules experts suggest the party may be acting illegally by suspending Derek Hatton for something he did while not a party member. “He has a clear and simple legal case and could easily win in court,” says one source.

But Labour source insists they've done nothing wrong. Says when panel readmits someone, they are a provisional member pending NEC approval. Hatton's provisional membership was suspended, they say, after the tweet came to light.

Adam Langleben @ adamlangleben
Here is the absolute joke of Labour's procedures. Derek Hatton has been suspended today after being readmitted yesterday. Labour's own rulebook states that they can simply reject his application within the first 8 weeks. Just reject it and expel him.

No wonder Labour are such a crap Opposition, so unconvincing as an alternative govt
They can't even run their own party, let alone the country

frumpety · 20/02/2019 20:42

BigChoc smiled and nodded, honestly couldn't be arsed to put him straight. Do think a lot of the UK at the moment are thinking the same thing though, it will all be fine, the grown ups behind the scenes will sort it all out. Big fat hairy NOPE is what I am hearing !

Most of us on here remember 9/11, I remember watching that unfold and thinking this is the day the world changes, it will never be the same. I feel like that about Brexit. Knowing that a few people can cause so much harm to so many, for purely ideological reasons.

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2019 20:43

Otto English @otto_english
So people have been donating 1p to Farage's Brexit party - obliging the party to send thank you letters and adminster the payment at a greater cost than the donation.

This wasn't my doing. The renegade behind it wishes to remain anonymous. But too good not to share. If the Brexit party can't run a website how the fruit loaf are we expected them to run a country

Amazing!

Grim anti-semitism at Essex Uni:

students opposing formation of a Jewish society

and a lecturer posting lies from far right white supremacist / Holocaust denial sites
Yet another example of an Islamic extremist allying with the batshit far right

Otto English ! 😂

It's not really a stretch to say Brexit is a result of 9/11 Sad

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2019 20:49

BigChoc, the Labour Party now has financial problems after having had a surplus in 2016. And the internal disciplinary system has apparently more or less collapsed under the sheer weight of the number of complaints.

There is quite clearly massive issues at red HQ.

OP posts:
frumpety · 20/02/2019 20:52

I reckon you are right DG Sad

But the parts of me that the gin reaches, still doesn't think it is going to happen, quite how this will manifest I am not sure. Wonder what the odds are now on Brexit not happening ?

BigChocFrenzy · 20/02/2019 20:53

Financial problems that cripple essential party work are also embarassing for a party that wants to manage the nations finances

(I appreciate it's not the Shadow Chancellor running Party finances, but it's still not a good look)

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2019 20:54

Peston @itvpeston
Lord Mandelson says he’s felt “morally compromised” staying in a party that has given such abuse to its own MPs and warns if Jeremy Corbyn doesn’t take action the splinter could become a split.

See the full interview at 11.05pm on @ITV | #Peston

I was wondering what the Lords might do...

Especially when one of the reasons many the Labour vote disappeared was stuff like what the 'there's no money left' note represented.

That's what has always bugged me about Corbyn - it was obvious right from the start that he just couldn't manage, let alone lead.

RosinaAlmaviva · 20/02/2019 21:00

Hi borntobequiet, yes, I mean the royal style threads in Style and Beauty. They've been a godsend over the past few months as light relief from political drama. Smile

wherearemychickens · 20/02/2019 21:00

I /really/ don't like incompetence.

I could probably live with a Brexit done competently. Although you get that quote about any government competent enough to carry it out, wouldn't do it.

I've emailed Anna and co, def correct address but it didn't send. Someone told me the reason is their mailboxes are full to capacity. Anyone else had this issue?

TalkinPeece · 20/02/2019 21:19

Just had a long chat with my Dad
neither of us can decide which has the worse / most surreal government Sad

1tisILeClerc · 20/02/2019 21:30

Well this is fairly surreal!
Nothing to do with Brexit though, but fun.

Sostenueto · 20/02/2019 21:32

I think that we have to be careful what media put out. There are however many thousands in labour party. The 600 complaints they are dealing with on antisemitism comes from the whole party, not just from the mps. Out of that figure 200 have no proof. They are being dealt with. There are a great number who would like the labour party destroyed so its a bit of a shambles really. I don't believe everything in the media as they are oh so political.

Sostenueto · 20/02/2019 21:34

There won't be anymore Tory defectors ....yet.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/02/2019 21:50

sos That might have been more convincing without the Young Labour allegations of the Tiggers being an Israeli plot

BigChocFrenzy · 20/02/2019 21:54

Also, MPs didn't believe the 673 figure

  • true or not, big problem when many of the party's own MPs think Labour may be lying about anti-semitism

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/feb/11/labour-has-looked-into-673-cases-of-alleged-antisemitism-figures-show

Margaret Hodge was among the MPs who questioned the statistics after the meeting,
saying she alone had submitted more than 200 examples of “vile antisemitism” where she believed the evidence showed they had connections with Labour.
“There has been a breakdown in trust,” the veteran MP said.

Channel 4 News@Channel4News

Conservative MP Phillip Lee tells @GaryGibbonBlog that he can't guarantee he'll stay in the party in future,
"because it depends really upon the direction of travel over the next few months".

"If we no-deal at the end of March, it won't just be me, it'll be a stampede."
